MARYKNOLL HIGH SCHOOL

WORKING

TOGETHER

aryknoll High School The Happiest School on Earth. Although you re prob

Mably reluctant to^admit it, it’s a place you all know and love. And in the halls of this
happy school, the strangest, most amazing things happen every day. Really. I am not
making this up.
Go ahead, just pick an average Thursday. I'll take you through it. At 7:45. Mr. Andrew Corc
oran (our principal) leads us in the Pledge of Allegiance and a morning prayer. From there, our
advisory teachers read us the announcements and lead us in a discussion of some sort for 25
minutes. You then get to take part in the “neat-o” phenomenon called Essential Schools. At
10:10, you rush down to the snack bar where you push and shove your way into the line, just
for that chance of possibly getting the last bag of Doritos. Then it’s back to a thrilling period 2
class until 12:10 in the afternoon. It’s lunch time now. You hear the awesome sounds of Billy
Ray Cyrus and Wynonna Judd coming through the speakers because it's "Country Music
Day”. You wait in line for Boston’s Pizza and bread sticks, and then have a nice lunch with
your best friends. And then it’s time for the last period of the day. Before you know it, it's 2:45.
and you’re going to one of three places—to a meeting, to practice, or everyone's favorite choice
... home.

Every day is filled with new twists and turns that none of you can ever be prepared for But
somehow, you find a way to get through it. And that, my friends, is it in a nutshell. No one at
Maryknoll EVER goes through anything by themselves. This is true for one major reason. The
friendships and camaraderie at our school create a sense of unity that we all have a part in. A
second explanation might be our high "secret to school-known fact” ratio (Rumors isn't just the
title of a play anymore ... ).

In all the activities I mentioned that take place on an average day, teamwork constantly
comes into play. Being a student at Maryknoll for the last four years has shown me that time
and time again. In my own personal experiences, 1 can vouch for that by saying that reciting
every other word of Sonnet 65 in a Shakespeare Recitation Contest would not have come even
close to being cool if I was up there by myself. I certainly couldn’t do Duo Interpretation on the
speech team if my partner and I weren’t in sync. And there’s no way I could pull off “Coffee
Talk” every Monday without the help of my friends.

And it goes so far beyond that. Maryknoll students come together to help the community
outside of school. Take a look at the Ecology Club, Campus Ministry, Student Senior Interact,
Amnesty International, and the Drug Awareness Committee ... just to name a few.

The school year has brought us together in so many ways. Besides all dressing alike in uni
form and gathering in Rogers Hall every Monday for standing assembly, we all have something
in common. We’ve all successfully read (or at least made it through “seminar” alive) All I ask
ing For Is Mg Body and Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. We all made it through
Bootie Rap Day. We all cheered for our respective division at Field Day. We laughed at the
Blessing of the Animals. We sang songs at liturgies. We sweated out “Who the Heck am I Go
ing to Take to Winter Ball” time. We gathered at Homecoming to cheer on our basketball
team. We made it through our trimester exhibitions. We made it through the 1996-1997 school
year ... together.

Unity isn’t just something we say at Maryknoll, it’s truly something we live. As
once stated on the extremely popular Sally Jesse Raphael, “I, you, me ... Yes we can”. And
that, guys, is all I have to say about that.-Brent Lau, ‘97

COMM_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

t had been an issue of intense discussion and heated debate. Meetings were called, surveys taken, and various, if not highly creative strate

Igies developed and employed at attempts in maintaining what had come to be the bulwark of faculty frustration and student vehemence-dress
code regulations. To ‘tuck ’ or ‘not to tuck’, that was the question.
An outside observer may have been struck with the seeming absurdity of the situation. Such rationale appears easily justified. In an age of rampant vi
olence and burgeoning addictions, teenage mothers and broken homes how could a subject so insignificant in comparison take precedence? The an
swer, though not immediately obvious lies at the heart of Maryknoll’s philosophy, the creation and perpetuation of a community in Christ.

Webster defines community as “sharing in common”. More than a three-story shining, maize structure with classrooms, a library, locker rooms and
flag pole Maryknoll is an assembly of persons committed to excellence through service. This ideal manifests itself in every aspect of the Maryknoll experi
ence, from textbook to extracurricular activity and beyond. As with any institution its success in reaching its ultimate aim is directly proportional to the
strength of its foundation.

Which brings us back to the dress code conflict. Maryknoll was built on the concept of caring. While perhaps misunderstood by the student body, the
faculty’s reactions to a breaking of tradition were in fact commendable. Associating untucked shirts with unbecoming, disheveled appearances, the fac
ulty naturally argued for the maintenance of student images. So great was their concern for the student as a whole, they were resistant to anything which
may have compromised the character and the potential of the individual. Though firm in their disgust of an inability to see belt buckles they were more
than willing to converse with students and compromise. In the voicing of their opinions and the maintenance of standards they cared. Likewise, so did
the students who shared their perspectives.

The dawning of the 1996-1997 school year saw a fully integrated Essential School system, revamped room numbers, and a fresh coat of paint for the
two buildings. A new vitality and source of peacefulness had somehow been tapped. And as if a passing storm that had proved less degenerative than its
ominous appearance, the issue of dress had all but vanished, returning to its unconsidered residence, leaving hardly a trace of its existence Billowing
shirt tails alone edifice that it was ever an issue at all.

The dress code incident did more than liberate the ends of one’s shirts however. It illustrated both student and faculty commitment, renewing and im
proving means of communication in the process. Most importantly, with resolution reached it served as an exercise in strength, further unifying the inter
nal spirit required for external action.

Noblesse Oblige—Much is asked of those to whom much has been given. We can only give that which we have. Only through a school-based sense of
community are we capable of reaching beyond school. It is the inner light of Maryknoll that guides our local efforts. From Monday morning assemblies
and pep clubs to beach clean-ups, blood drives, and food donations the transition is obvious. We, as individuals go forth, some more prone to air resis
tance than others, with the Maryknoll family behind us and the entire community foremost in our minds.-Stephanie Lape, ‘97
