Each and every one of us at Mary-
knoll have been, in our ways, moving
in all directions. There are many op

journeys — whether it be strolling

constantly expanding and evolving.
We also get involved in all the differ

we fan out into our communities and

Countries
like Russia,
Japan, the
Marshall Islands, Great Britain,
and France make up a mere
taste of the richness of the
world made wider through
Maryknoll's extensive travel
programs.

One needs only to have curios
ity, a willingness to learn, and
an open mind, to benefit from
a foreign country. Probably the
most valuable lesson that the
travel program lends is that
learning is not limited to the
classroom; most of our lasting
education will come from out
side experiences with new cul
tures, new ideas and world
wide possibilities.

Tours are also extensions of
school courses. Mr. James Eak-
man, Russian history, teacher,
takes groups to Russia for them
to "see, feel, and experience
the history they have studied."
Mrs. Frankie Lucas of the English
Department says her British tour
"made the literature come
alive. We saw where William
Wordsworth lived; we walked
the same paths he took." Stu
dents who have traveled
through their foreign language
courses can attest to how

DIRECTIONS OF THE WORLD much their foreign language skills
improved while in its native coun
try.

Marshall Islands visitors hove some
what different reasons for travel
ing. They go to the Marshalls to
help Maryknoll Sisters in repairing
the local school, teaching its stu
dents, and working in the commu
nity. They are exposed to "a de
veloping nation with political and
economic problems. For our kids
to see what struggle is all about

mendous benefits we have here

a senior, added that in the Mar
shalls. he realized he "didn't need
material things to have fun and
be happy."

Each student traveler brings
something memorable back with
him or her. For Junior Andrew Ever
ett, he loved the British theatre
and the underground railway sys
tems. For Gregg Nakayama, it
was winning 24 pounds on the Irish
Sea ferry casino. Jim Gerding en
joyed "sightseeing in Tokyo and
visiting places I have read about
in history books." Yet sometimes,
one does not even need as noble
a reason as historical importance
to have a wonderful time in a for
eign place. As Senior Eugene
Kang reminds us, sometimes the
best aspect of a country is as sim
ple as. "the beautiful French
women."

Students here have so much to
give, and much to receive. The
solid foundation we build through
schooling ot Maryknoll will go a
long way in the future. Our motto
of "Noblesse Oblige" takes on
greater importance when paired
with the joy that can be found in
living in the world and of the
world. Our education and our ex
perience will allow us to enter our
adult lives bursting forth in all di
rections. toward heights unimag-
inable.

If you look inside your

heart.
You don't have to be

afraid
Of what you are.
There's an answer

If you reach

•'Z.

34

into your soul
And the sorrow that you know
Will melt away.

And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your tears aside
And you know

You can survive.
So when you feel
Like hope is gone.

35

Look inside you
And be strong,
And you'll finally see the

truth
That a hero

lies in you.
It's a long road

36

37

If you search Within
yourself
And the

emptiness
you felt...
Will disappear.
And then a hero
comes along

40

ILezke Meliss

See the truth that a hero
lies in you.

Lord knows
Dreams are hard to follow
But don't let anyone tear

them away.

41

42

43

So when you feel like hope is

gone.
Look inside you and be strong.

And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you.
