“ The m ore you pul into it. the m ore you 11 gel
out of it.” This was the thought that filled the
minds of Knollers as they entered into the spirit of
retreat. Realizing that a successful retreat depends
on an individual’s interest and initiative, they set
about their spiritual task with diligence. Knollers
put aside all hooks, sports equipment, and other
worldly distractions on Oct. 24, 25, 26, and left
their minds and hearts open for the words of God.
Father Ernest Clauss, SS.GC, the retreat master,
helped them to lake an inventory of their lives.
F irst, he em phasized the necessity of silence in
order to give God a better chance Lo he heard by
their hearts. He also stressed the need for Apos
tolic Christians. Students in Catholic schools learn
their religion, hut somehow or other they forget
to live it. He made a special appeal to Knollers
that they become Apostolic C hristians.
Their attendance at daily Mass and their recep
tion of Holy Communion proved that Knollers were
out to strengthen their spiritual life. After three
days, the fam iliar phrase was heard around the
campus, “ Boy, I sure wish I could make a good
retreat like this every year.'
“ It is in silence th a t great thoughts arise and great
deeds are accomplished.”

Beginning with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, rever

chock-full of vigorous activities. Having parents visit
classes in action inspired many of the offspring into
displaying a great amount of thinking. Vivid and skillful
student works of art Imaps and projects) were exhibited

by an additional special treat, lunch concocted by Sister

Parents stood by exhausted as they watched with
gleeful “ oh’s” and “ ah ’s” our girls’ hockey team in

Thoroughly satisfied parents were amazed to see
that their darlings expended so much worthwhile energy
in the course of a day.
After treating the parents all day, the teen-agers
celebrated in the evening by holding a dance in Bachelot

The game with St. Francis proved to be a battle

Slipping and sliding seemed to be fun for both
teams. The Knollers managed to come out the
muddy victors.
On the Maryknoll court, classes met for the

seniority and experience, Sophomore B’s girls com

basketball competition, they took the victory, also.
Sophomore Phys. Ed. classes were very popular
this year because of the introduction of field
hockey. The girls’ enthusiasm was displayed even
in the way they compared black and blue marks.

Hard fought and high tensioned are the only ad

the game of the year on the Junior Scholastic agenda.
It was a battle to win “ Ducky” Swan’s Golden Cleat.
St. Louis scored first to put the Spartans behind
6-0 at the half on a do or die pass from quarterback
Talbot George to halfback Lloyd Yamada which made
things look bleak for the scrappy Spartans. The spunky

Academic, perservering, and hardworking! 1he
Senior B Class has been known throughout its high
school years for just that! Now, in its “ last lap,’'
these characteristics have been more outstanding
than ever.
Our class day dance was held on November
1Gth at Bachelot Hall which was decked out in a
unique tropical atmosphere, set in vines, shimmer
ing roses, torch ginger and palms.
Another highlight in the S enior’s Memory book
is the winning of this year’s song contest. With
the appellation, “ Our Lady’s Troubadors,” they
sang their way into the hearts of the judges with
“ Ave Maria,” “ Fools Rush In,” and “ Beautiful
Kahana.”
“To the Lovely Margaret,” the class play put
on on January 11th starred Nani Lee, Benjamin
Fong, Joan Smith. Rachael Quemuel, and Richard
Wong. This light drama was directed by Rhoda
Wong.
On June 1st, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of
Peace, the seniors bade farewell to their well-loved
Mary knoll. In every heart lay the promise that “ in
days when we are far away, we’ll lift our faithful
hearts to pray that God may bless thy every day”—
our one and only Maryknoll.
Constit uting the more carefree half of the Class
of ’52, Senior A sped through its final year of high
school. On all its undertakings, it left its trade
marks of mirth, laughter— perhaps not always of
success— hut always a spirit of never-say-die.
The year was initiated with the class play, engi
neered in the typical, unique style that characterized
these Mighty Seniors. “ Springville’s Centennial, ’
a musical comedy, was written, produced, and
directed by the students themselves. Gladys
Tiwanak was the guiding light.
The Seniors also occupied a prominent place
in the sports world. Captained by Sidney Lindo,
the boys battled their way to the intramural basket
ball championship. Although the girls’ volleyball
team didn’t fare so well, other teams always con
sidered a game with them “real tough.”
Mid-term and college preparatory exams in
duced the carefree to sober down. Intense studying
—and cramming— preceded every exam. The year
was fast drawing to a close and thoughts turned
seriously to the future. The end was too near!
Time was too short!
Then, graduation was here! The four-year
journey through high school was finally over. As
these incomparable Seniors walked down the aisle,
minds quietly slipped into the past to re-live all their
happy days at Maryknoll, Our Maryknoll.

Jn Appreciation*
We, the staff members of the 1952 The Tribute, extend our sineere gratitude to
all those who have in anyway contributed to the publication of our yearbook.
In particular we wish to offer our heartfelt thanks to: Sisters Ana Doloritas,
Grace Marian, and Maria Rosario, whose encouragement and constant kokua have
contributed in making this issue a reality.
The Faculty, for their perfect understanding for the necessary intrusions on
photography days.
1he student body, for being “ who, when, and where” in and out of season.
Paradise of the Pacific, Ltd., for their efficient and helpful service, especially Mr.
Williams, for his interest in the printing, and Mr. Kjargaard, for his straight eye in
making the engravings.
Mary M argah’s Studio, whose exceptional portraits and vivid campus shots will
become more dear each year.
S. K. Smith Co., who prepared our covers and sent them to us in such good time.
Bill Kim, for the football pictures he gave us.
Our patrons and patronesses, whose financial help was invaluable.
We of the staff join again, with all our alumni and friends, in congratulating the
Maryknoll Sisters on the occasion of their Silver Jubilee in Hawaii Nei. Ad M ultos
Annos!
