of Quality This
Catholic year...
Education
Four elemental years have passed in which Maryknoll encoun
tered the opportunities to experiment, expand, and most of
all, revolutionize. While the school itself underwent a dra
matic renovation, the heart of Maryknoll-its students and facul
ty-have also endured a renewal of thought, perception, individual
ity, and harmony.
THIS IS THE YEAR ... a year of excitement, a year of transition,
a year of achievement, a year of completion. As Maryknoll cele
brates seventy years of excellence, a new legacy begins.
This is the year of EXCITEMENT. Maryknoll students began
new ideas to improve school spirit. Special assemblies, around the
island for points, games and prizes-all aimed to boost unity. On
Tuesdays, Seniors wear their class shirts to promote unity and to
instigate an action to do the same amongst the underclassmen.
Spirited pep rallies and an all-new cheerleading squad have helped
the athletic program see some winning streaks. Students with com
mon interests, ranging from listening to Reggae to playing Magic,
have united to form new school wide clubs. The music in the halls
and the games played at lunch seemed to be enjoyed by students
and faculty alike.
We celebrate a time of TRANSITION-change. The hiring of Mr.
Michael Baker, an educator from New Hampshire as the President
of Maryknoll Schools, brought both a new face, and a rush of fresh
ideas to the administration. Mr. Baker is the first lay person to as
sume this role since the school was founded in 1927. This transition
does not break the seventy years of Maryknoll tradition that we cel-
_______
ebrate this year. Rather, it initiates
the beginning of a collaboration be
tween the old and the new—a combi
nation that this year, is proving suc
cessful.
As Maryknoll revolutionizes every
day, the past is not forgotten.
Founders’ Day is celebrated to com
memorate the vibrant history of
Maryknoll-its priests, sisters, and
brothers, and their experiences ‘liv
ing’ Maryknoll. Students and faculty
learn about the past and look into the
future, with the Maryknoll spirit that
has been spread throughout the
world.
This is a year of ACHIEVEMENT.
Maryknoll High School has fully
evolved into the Coalition of Essential
Schools system, where students and
teachers make this challenging sys
tem work. A new method of learning
accompanied the schedule changes
that the first Essential Schools class
encountered in August of 1994. Enter
the exhibition, a far cry from the stan
dard comprehensive tests usually
given at the end of a term. Students
had nothing to conform to; the
method of demonstrating their knowl
edge was entirely devised by them-
selves, and the freedom to express their own
interpretations of an Essential Question was
what sparked a change in student growth.
Starting from day one in the classroom, the Es
sential Schools students have evolved from
simplistic thought into a liberal community.
Students as well as faculty achieve together,
learning more about the materials presented,
one another, and themselves. Noblesse
Oblige-much is asked of whom much has been
given-a motto to be lived by everyone here at
Maryknoll. Challenges overwhelm us every
day, but it is characteristic of us to come
through with achievement.
A year of achievement for everyone, but es
pecially a year of achievement, and COMPLE
TION for the graduating seniors of 1998. We
are the first graduating class finishing four
years of the only Essential Schools system in
Hawaii. We have learned to take on the new
challenges that were demanded of us-exhibi-
tions, portfolios, Senior Project, Completed
Works Compiled. We do not know what is ex
pected, but rather we are going to become the
expected, for WE created a new legacy for
Maryknoll. WE have made our mark. WE have
made Maryknoll history. WE have completed
our four years at Maryknoll as the first four-
years class to complete the Essential Schools
program.
THIS IS THE YEAR. This is the year where
chapters of the Maryknoll book will continue
and colorful volumes will follow. We celebrate
seventy years of excellence-seventy years
ofMaryknoll. 1997-1998 is not simply an anni
versary to commemorate the past, nor is it the
year in which prevalence has replaced tradi
tion. THIS IS THE YEAR in which Maryknoll
has instilled true growth in all aspects of a
quality Catholic school.
