BAHSE East Zone
CHAMPIONS
Anticipation. Training. Exhaustion. Celebration. Chanting from the crowd and the rhythm
section, comprised of African drums and snare drums, creating thunderous vibrations. Game
day whether rain or shine. There’s a good side, the accomplishments portrayed by the
numerous trophies, the boisterous cheers from the crowds of parents and friends when
there is a winning goal and the ever-more presence of passion and drive of the young ladies
on the field. However, there’s also a side many people don’t have preview to. The long hours
of rigorous preparation, bodily aches and injuries, the many disappointments and failures
and moments of self-doubt and lack of motivation. All this and more give insight into the life
of a footballer, more specifically, the lives of the 18 members of the Bishop Anstey High
School East (BAHSE) Football Team, that is, the 2018 East zone Champions in Trinidad and
Tobago.
The BAHSE Football team comprises of 18 students- Jovanah Williams(Captain), Faith
Mitchell-Moore, Glennel Hyacenth, Christi-Anne Wood, Tyanna Williams, Victoria Williams,
Joleen Noreiga, Sheridan Pollonais, Lillian Selvon, Akia Morris, Maegan Briggs, Glorious
Wuddivira, Jalene Sobers, Natalya Martinez, Sarah Guyadeen, La Toya Paul, Khea-Marie
Lee Quay and Nyla Guy. Without a doubt, these young ladies collaborated in order to win
the well-deserved title of East Zone Champions, having won eight of their games, drawn
one and lost one during the ‘regular season’ September to October.

Under the esteemed leadership of Coach Dwayne Davis and co-coach Jade Noreiga,
who is also a past student, these young ladies were able to compete and win most of
their zonal matches between schools. Unfortunately, the team was unable to qualify for
the finals for the Eastzone Intercol/Knock out games, as they lost the semi-finals match
against Valencia School.
Assistant coach, Jade Noreiga was able to give an exclusive interview on her thoughts
about the team’s performance and how they could improve. Ms Noreiga shared
sentiments on the pride she had for the young ladies excelling in the sport, stating that,
“it’s always a goal to come first and to be the best.” However, Ms. Noreiga entreated the
young ladies to work harder for the next season with hopes of the football side and
school establishing off-season training. Additionally, Ms. Noreiga appealed to the school
to increase participation and support for the sport, through mechanisms such as more
chaperones for the numerous events in and outside of the country.
You may be asking, “What’s next for these young ladies?” It can be noted that not only
do these girls conquer the school’s football competition, but also some of them are
actually training with the National Team for Trinidad and Tobago. These include, Christi-
Anne Wood, Tyanna Williams, Lilian Selvon and Jalene Sobers. Overall, we wish these
brilliantly talented young ladies all the best in their future endeavors as they continue in
the pursuit of success and greatness.

SCHOLARSHIPS streaming down their faces, friends smiling from

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR and teachers standing with a thunderous

SCHOLARS of victory. That was the mood for the 2018 Award
and Achievement Day for Bishop Anstey and
Trinity College East Sixth Form. Months of hard
work and dedication were manifested on the
stage with cameras flashing to capture each of
the 20 awardees for scholarships.
Though BATCE Sixth Form is young in existence,
the expertise and diligence of the teachers
alongside the level of commitment of the student
body far surpasses the stipulated age bracket. It’s
important to note that most of society will only see
the happy aspect of this remarkable achievement,
but not the other side of the coin. They were not
present during the failed exams, the friction
between student- teacher relationship, the tedious
effort to balance work and family life or the
lonesome hours of quiet study into the night.
But luckily, these brilliant students rolled away the curtains to offer us a front row seat to
the reason behind their success. These scholars namely, Jeremy Baksh,Renee Berahzer,
Abigail Charles, Jewel Coker,Iyana Doyle, Samir Elattwy, Isaiah Ike Ferguson, Tamia
Gilkes, Jerrel Gordon,Naomi Hedley, Nicholas Heerlal, Celine Howard, Daniel John, Sarai
Koon Koon, Tyrese Lake, Katherine Lue Attin,Vicky Ramnarine, Kristen Thomas, Janine
Teres Veronique,Marvelous Wuddivira prepared a wonderful presentation on their
accomplishments.
‘Who am I?’ Such a question demands self-introspection and an honest overview of
decisions and thoughts. This is the format that the students chose to share their
background stories. What elements contribute to these exceptional individuals? How can
you, a young, aspiring engineer, entrepreneur or social activist attain a great honor as
winning a scholarship? What are the preliminary steps that you need to take in order to
fulfill those goals you have set? How can you build that confidence in yourself that you
too, can obtain this award?
‘Renee Berahzer advocates that gratitude to the important people in her life is the
pinnacle of her success. Ms. Berahzer shares, “I am truly blessed to have the love and
guidance of persons who display extreme confidence in what I can achieve.” Ms. Berahzer
pays tribute to her beloved parents, admirable sister and jovial friends for their positive
influence on her attitude towards education. Other awardees namely, Mr. Samir Elattwy,
Mr. Daniel John, Mr. Jeremy Baksh and Ms. Iyana Doyle share the same sentiments.
Additionally, awardee, Celine Howard attributes her success to her goal setting. Ms.
Howard explains that “attaining a national scholarship has always been a dream of mines
since I was a child.” Ms. Howard also claims that her end goal is to enhance her studies in
Neuroscience, so as to assist “persons who suffer from Autism, Alzheimer’s and other
brain-associated disorders.” Thus, Ms. Howard proves that planning paves the way for the
execution of goals.
‘Furthermore, these graduates also took inspiration from other well-renowned persons. For
instance Ms. Jewel Coker implemented Steve Jobs’ quote, “Technology is nothing. What’s
important is that you have a faith in people, that they’re basically good and smart, and if
you give them tools, they’ll do wonderful things with them.” Moreover, Nicholas Heerlal
strongly believes in the words of Shia Labouf “Don’t let your dreams be dreams.”
EVERYDAY GRAPHIC | 138
Likewise Ms. Katherine Lue Attin embodies the strong words of Max Depree, “We cannot
become what we want, by remaining what we are.” Finally, Ms. Marvelous Wuddivira
shares, “the race is not for the swift nor the battle to the strong, but time and chance
happen to them all.” Without out a doubt these students take insight from well-reputed
persons.
Moreover, these scholars couldn’t stop referring to the grace of God that brought them
here. Truly, God has surpassed many of their expectations. Ms. Sarai Koon Koon, Ms
Abigail Charles and Ms. Tamia Gilkes all revered the glory of God in their lives, whom
without, they could not have come so far.
In conclusion, these spectacular young men and women have brought honor to the home
of Bishop Anstey and Trinity College East Sixth Form. They definitely personify the words,”
Today I am proud of BATCE, tomorrow, BATCE will be proud of me.”

YO PRO
CONFERENCE
MENTORING YOUNG PROFESSIONALS
On Wednesday October 24 to Thursday October 25, 2018, Student Leaders were
engaged in a two day Strength-based conference at the Cheryl Greaves Auditorium.
This conference held in partnership with YoPro Global Company, was an initiative taken
by the school as part of the continued drive to equip and empower the students with
skills for progression in life.
Founded by Ty Richardson, YoPro seeks to provide tools and resources to youth and
young professionals in emerging markets. The company started off as a social network
in Silicon Valley but soon evolved into a social enterprise with the mission of serving
emerging markets.

The Mentoring Young Professionals (M.Y.) Conference, is a drive that seeks to encourage
youth and young professionals to focus on their strengths in achieving greatness, while
leveraging their weakness.
Fortunately, BATCE Student Leaders were able to participate in the 2018 conference that was
aimed at educating them on a strengths-based approach to life, identifying strengths through the
use of the Gallup’s Strengthfinder assessment, creating an understanding of each strength and
how they’re manifested, and learning how to apply strengths in career planning and everyday
activities for a more successful life.
On day one, the guest speaker, Ms. Judy McSween, Entrepreneur and Consultant, spoke on Your
One True Self, while Ms. Angie Coleman, International Consultant and Executive Coach, covered
an Introduction to Strengths, and Discovering Your Strengths, urging the students to use their
strengths in their everyday life.

Presenting on the transformation from physical bullying to digital aggression, Attorney at
Law, Mediator, and Lecturer, Dr. Wendell C. Wallace focused on the legal implications of
bullying. He gave real life examples of cases, identifying several causes and effects of
cyberbullying, with the extreme effect being suicide. While some may think that liking,
commenting, or even sharing a picture on social media is harmless, he stated otherwise as
it can have the same effect as direct bullying. After informing the students about the
various legal aspects associated with cyberbullying, he urged them to be mindful of the
things they post, comment on, like, and share on social media, and to be responsible
when using technology.
Furthermore, founder of the Anti-Bullying
Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ABATT), Dr.
Alicia Martin, addressed the types of counselling
and support that are available to students and
the various programs that they can join. She also
encouraged the students to stand up for each
other and be the change they want to see.
On Tuesday October 02, 2018, students of Form
two were responsible for conducting whole school
assembly where they brought awareness to
bullying and its existence from the biblical days to
present. Using scriptural references, they
highlighted that Jesus understands what they may
be going through because even he was ridiculed,
mocked, and spat on.
