Rye, Camber
and Winchelsea

1

RYE - CAMBER- WINCHELSEA

The Cinque Port of Rye is rich in history and is a well preserved medieval
town in East Sussex.

The town has a labyrinth of winding streets with road names like Watchbell
Lane, Cinque Ports Street, Traders Passage, Mermaid and Wish Streets
that hint at the town’s history.
Add to that, the buildings themselves, like the ancient inns, crooked
half-timbered houses that line a patchwork of steep cobbled lanes and
that’s before you get to Rye’s 13th century castle !

2

Rye Castle. Ypres Tower and Museum
Discover the Tower’s roles through nine centuries of history; as a defence,
private home, prison, mortuary and now houses a museum. Climb the
tower for views over the town and river Rother. There are various exhibits
in the tower including a 15th Century suit of armour , a smuggler’s lamp,
open prison cells, a model showing how the shoreline has changed and
there’s a medieval herb garden as well.

3

Just beneath the walls of Ypres Tower is the Gun Garden, an unusual
defence which appears to first date from the 16th century and which
consists of a gun battery facing out to sea and covering the approach to the
harbour. Rye is a Cinque Port.
