Challenges and Changes Health Disparities for Black People
Dr. Portasia Torkington has helped many Black
people in Liverpool, England and South Africa. As
a high school student, she wanted to be a teacher.
After attending the local school, she enrolled at
Mariannhill College near Durban, to train to become
a teacher, only to find out that she could not go into
the classroom because of her age. In her country, you
had to be 18 years old to teach. She then decided to
train to become a nurse. This would enable her to
earn an income to help support her sisters’ education.
When she completed her training as a nurse, she
decided to train as a midwife. However she was
not immediately able to get a job. Out of the ten
students who started nursing school with her, she
was the only one who did not get hired. Then, one
day she received a message from the matron of the
school that Dr. Lionel Steel was interested in hiring
her. Dr. Steel was a veterinarian and the overseer of
a health clinic, and he hired her to work there.
“Working in the clinic, I fell in love with midwifery,”
Pro said. “I also fell in love with my husband, Tony
Torkington. Tony was a Catholic priest. We left South Africa and moved to Liverpool, England and
got married. Tony writes about our experience working together and fleeing the country in his book,
“Love with No Regrets”. We got married and had two sons, Mark and Simon.”
Although busy as a wife and mother, Pro continued to pursue her career while facing inequality. Her
degree did not sit on a shelf. She used it positively to impact the lives of thousands of families in
South Africa and Liverpool, England. Working in the health care system in both countries, I discovered
discrimination. In South Africa, we had laws that reinforced discrimination with apartheid. In England
there were laws against discrimination but the reality of it was that it still existed. In South Africa
you could not go to certain health care centers if you were Black. Often times, people died because
the system cared little about the health concerns of Black people. Black health care workers did not

from Liverpool University. She did her Doctorate
also at Liverpool University which was based
on research into racism in the National Health
Service in the England. Pro wanted her research
to make a difference to people’s lives so she
was involved in a number of practical initiatives
in Liverpool like sickle cell, Granby Community
Mental Health Group and Mary Seacole House,
and the Translation and Interpreting service in
Liverpool.
Some time later a friend of Pro’s read her research
and she wanted to make a financial contribution
to help health needs in South Africa. Pro took
a year’s sabbatical from her job to look at the
health care system in South Africa. With the
support of the Minister of Health, I was able to
go into the hospitals and centers and document
what the needs were,” she said.
As the political climate changed in South Africa,
so did its health care system, making Pro’s
research and documentation helpful. “Under
President Nelson Mandela, a free national health
care service was provided for all South Africans.
Unfortunately, many citizens experienced
challenges to access medical care. “I found
many of the people had to travel miles to get
their medicine and services. When health care
providers came to the rural areas there were long
lines of people waiting for medicine and other
services. As a result of the research that I did
in South Africa, a health care center was built.
Today, the health care center provides services
for thousands of families. A new maternity wing
was recently added to the building,” said Pro.
BBllaacckk OOppaall MMaaggaazziinnee || 2233
In addition to health care, Pro has made an
impact in education. This began with her running
Women and Health courses in outlying estates in
Liverpool. She explained, “This class has helped
many students. I was often told by students who
took my class how much it changed their lives.”
One student, Margaret, stated, “Dr. Torkington,
has changed the world because she touched our
lives. She is truly inspirational. She treated us
like human beings. I know we will always hold
her in our hearts. To her I say, ‘Thank you for
everything.”
She began advocating and teaching a black
studies class at Liverpool Hope University
College . In fact, she was one of the first people
to introduce a black studies class into higher
education in England. Appreciation for her
innovative work on Black Studies and health care
came in other ways, also. The late Dr. William E.
Nelson, Jr., then chair of The Ohio State University
(OSU) Black Studies Department, invited Pro
to the United States to look at the health care
system in the US. S. Yolanda Robinson, who
worked with Nelson at the OSU, took Pro to meet
health administrators and tour many of the health
facilities in the Columbus, Ohio community.
“Looking at the health care system in the United
States, I found that it did not have a National
Health Care System like England” , observed Pro.
Pro’s book, “Their Untold Stories”, contains
accounts of people’s life experiences and
describes how these have impacted on their
mental health and lives in general. Pro expounds,
“One of the client’s in the book said that dictating
his story for the book helped him. Having my
pictures in the book gave me confidence and
greater self-trust,” he said.

which has been her support system in much needed times like these. I’m
happy to showcase this story because I think that awareness needs to be
brought to Autism so that people begin to understand children like my
nephew & all children dealing with a condition that is through no fault of
their own. People are quick to label them as “Difficult” or “Bad” or “Worse”
when they simply can’t help their condition and may need a little bit more
understanding of how to help them communicate what is causing their
stress and what they are trying to convey how they feel or may need. I’m
honored to be able to do this story about my nephew & also to do a writing
collaboration with Writer Emily Claire as she provides more in depth facts
and details to bring more awareness to Autism.

Hello! I’m Sydney Kendrick and I’m 23
years old. I’m also a model. I have a lot
of goals as a model. Some of which would
include; Changing the modeling industry
for acceptance of all body types, to be
a role model for other disabled women
as well as that disability doesn’t have
to be gloomy and dark. We have happy
moments and we can be fashionable too!
There are a few things that I am rather
passionate about. One of which is
awareness. I have a rare genetic connective
tissue disease called Classic Ehlers
Danlos Syndrome. Classic EDS, is a
malformation of collagen and collagen
is the most abundant protein in the
body. This causes everything and I mean,
everything, to be overly stretchy and
fragile. For example, I have hypermobile
joints and I also have issues with my
gastrointestinal system. Among other
bodily systems as well.
Black Opal Magazine | 49
My joint hypermobility as it’s cool to see,
also causes things like chronic pain and
full joint dislocations. It can get quite
painful. My gastrointestinal system
has the blunt side of my issues and is
where I’m most affected. I have severe
dysmotility which is where the GI tract
is paralyzed and well just doesn’t work.
I can’t digest food. So, I’m fed through a
central line in my chest. Which is a thin
catheter that goes straight into my heart.
I also have a feeding tube that is used for
my many medications.
But, it’s because of those things that I am
alive today and I am very thankful for
that. I hope that somebody that looks like
me and has similar problems can see that
they can be beautiful too. Tubes and lines
don’t matter. You can be beautiful with
tubes, lines, surgical scars, and stretch
marks. We are beautiful.
