King Florestan and the Queen are hosting a celebration for the christening of Princess Aurora. The guests include her fairy godmothers, who each bestow magical gifts upon her: beauty, temperament, purity, joy, wit and generosity. Before the Lilac Fairy provides the final gift, another fairy approaches, Carabosse. She is in a rage because she did not get invited to the ceremony. As revenge for being forgotten, she curses Aurora to one day prick her finger and die. At Princess Aurora’s 18th birthday celebration, all sharp objects have been banned. The celebration begins with the townspeople dancing. Here enters a mysterious cloaked guest with a gift for Aurora, a spindle. Never seeing a sharp object before, Aurora dances with it. She pricks her finger on the spindle as the mysterious cloaked guest reveals herself as Carabosse. She reiterates her curse before disappearing. The Lilac Fairy appears to protect Aurora and casts a spell over the palace and all the guests, sending them to sleep. At her command, a forest covers the Palace until the curse is lifted. One hundred years later, Prince Désiré is out hunting. During this time, the Lilac Fairy appears to him and presents a vision of Princess Aurora. He begs her to take him to where the princess in the vision sleeps. They journey together through the forest to the overgrown palace. Here, the Prince kisses Aurora to lift the curse. The Court is jubilant with the wedding celebrations of Princess Aurora and Prince Désiré. The Lilac Fairy arrives and gives her blessing to their marriage.
