May Letter from the Clergy
Dear Friends,
This month at Oakwood Church we are launching our Living and
Giving campaign. It starts on 4th May and there will be two closing
thanksgiving services – first on 1st June with Communion and second
on 8th June (Pentecost Sunday) with Parade. I hope everyone is able
to receive the Living and Giving leaflet and I encourage you all to
fill in a response form.
Why does the Church ask people to do things and to give money?
The Living and Giving campaign may raise this question in our
hearts and minds.
What’s the true answer to the question, then? I have three other
questions to pose in order to get a grip on answering it. The first thing
to ask is ‘What is the Church?’ ‘The Church’ is nothing else but the
people whose lives have been changed by Jesus Christ – connected
through all time and space by our call to worship God. In each
particular place individual churches represent this wider Body of
Christ. The local churches and the wider church structures to which
they are connected are shaped by the people who God has called to
participate in them – if you think church could be done differently,
speak out and change it! Later in the Broadcast is an article about
‘belonging’ to Church – if you belong in a formal way then you have
a voice, and both the right and responsibility to shape the life of the
church.
The second question to ask is ‘what is Church for?’ What does the
church need people’s time, talents and money for? What do we,
together, do with it all? Jesus boiled the law of God down to two
simple things – love God and love your neighbour. This is a good
summary of what we want from church life. We want to love God by
being able to offer worthy and engaging worship to God; we want
our worship to encourage others into exploring the love of God
through Jesus Christ. We want to love our neighbour – to offer what
we can to those in need in our locality and around the world. We
want to be a worshipping church which loves all people so that
together we might be a blessing to the whole community.
The third and final question is ‘How does the Church achieve its
aims?’ Christians are called by Jesus to love one another and so to
share what they have together – to put their love into action. This was
the way from the earliest days of the church. In Acts chapter 2, we
are told that “All the believers continued together in close fellowship
and shared their belongings with one another. They would sell their
property and possessions, and distribute the money among all,
according to what each one needed.” Whilst this is an ideal which
has rarely been realised in church history, it remains the basis of our
life together – in order to remind ourselves that all we have is given
by God we do not cling tightly to it, but give it to each other to decide
on how to use it together.
I hope you will prayerfully think about how you will respond to the
Living and Giving campaign. God calls us together as the church
and I believe God is calling each person to belong to church life for a
reason for which the Holy Spirit is already preparing them. We are
blessed by time, talents and money in order for us to be able to
respond to the individual call each one of us hears from the Lord. I
am excited about the month of this campaign because it is a time
when together we will be listening for God’s call and encouraging
each other to respond.
Yours in Christ, George

Help!
It has never been a secret that I dislike the increasing use of
letters e.g. RMC (now defunct). Please don’t let us start writing
O.C. in minutes or the broadcast. Recently my dislike was
justified when at a meeting no-one could remember what the
acronym YLAMB stood for. YL obviously Youth Leaders. I
suggested And Methodist Bairns but that didn’t go down well...
Can anyone please put me out of my misery.
Thanks, Joyce Kilvington (Tel 2615182)
Messy Church
@
Oakwood Church
“It’s like a family get together”
We love Messy Church. Since its beginnings, 18 months ago, our
messy congregation continues to grow, develop, build community
together, love each other and love God. We have fun playing
crazy games, getting messy in
small and careful ways and in
massive bursts of creativity.
“I loved digging out all of the
plastic food from in the blue
goo.”
The blue goo helped us imagine
the pigswill which the prodigal
son had to eat
We share Bible stories, sing songs, pray creatively and share
grace very noisily.
“It has a very child friendly relaxed atmosphere for all the
family to enjoy together.”
Over a fuddle of sandwiches, crisps, cakes and whatever else
arrives, we enjoy chatting with old friends and making new ones.
This big picture of the world helped us
think about Psalm 8 and give thanks for
God's creation
“Love to enjoy the messy activities with my boy. Love to
share time over a cuppa with friends.”
All are very welcome

409 Harehills Lane
As you may know the café was opened in 1992, as a new
and innovative contribution to the Christian presence in
Harehills, after the closure of Harehills Lane Methodist
Church. For all the years it has been open, Meeting Point
has continued in its work of offering friendship, care and
concern to its many customers.
Over the last couple of years Pauline and her volunteers
have been extremely grateful for your gifts of food and
cleaning products, donations which enable the cafe to
serve some of the vulnerable people in their local
community.
Now, due to the economic climate, they are struggling to
make ends meet. Please could you consider give a
monetary donation to help Pauline to resolve any repair
and/or maintenance issues.
If you are able to help in this way, please see Joyce
Kilvington or Lynda P. Thank you.
OASIS
Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10
Dear Friends – Oasis Thursday 1st/15th May
We wish you the spirit of love and the promise of peace during this
special time of year. May your family be blessed with all the joy
that life can bring. Oasis starts 9.45am with Communion 10.30am.
A Prayer for Christian Aid Week (11–17 May 2014)
This red envelope, Lord, has been put through my letterbox.
And I have delivered others like it through other doors during
this Christian Aid Week, as have hundreds of others in
churches and faith communities all over the land.
It seems such a small thing, in the face of such global hunger,
poverty and injustice. And yet, small and slight as it is, this
red envelope is a sign, a symbol, of an unwillingness to do
nothing, to let the powers and principalities of entrenched
inequality remain unchallenged and unchanged.
For you, Creator God, have told us what is good and what you
require of us - to do what is just, to show constant love and to
live in humble fellowship with you.
So I thank you for these red envelopes, for all those who
deliver and collect them, for all those many more, of all faiths
and none, who give through them.
And I pray that as a result someone somewhere will be able
to buy a mosquito net, or rebuild a house, or send their
daughter to school, or dig a well, or sow seeds and in due
course reap a harvest - a harvest of hope.
Let your blessing, change-making God,
be upon the work of Christian Aid and all agencies and people
of goodwill everywhere who seek your Shalom and pursue it.
In the name of the One who came that people might have life -
life in all its fullness.
Amen

MRDF relaunches as All We Can
On Tuesday 8 April the Methodist Relief and Development Fund
(MRDF) announced an ambitious set of plans for the future,
including a new name to reflect its commitment to tackle poverty.
From that date it will be known as All We Can, the Methodist
relief and development partner. The charity’s new strategy and
strengthened identity are the result of a wide-ranging strategic
review, carried out over the last year, involving supporters, staff,
volunteers and overseas partners.
Maurice Adams, Chief Executive of All We Can, says: “Over the
years All We Can, under various names, has provided support
and resources to many millions of people in great need. Our vision
for the next chapter in the story of Methodist relief and
development work seeks to build upon our strengths and
heritage. This change has been inspired by our past so that we
can continue the work for the future”.
“We believe that our collaborative approach to tackling poverty,
rooted in Christian principles and Methodist values, is more
relevant than ever. We have refocused our work to better
support our partners – including churches, organisations and
individuals – to bring about lasting change in their communities.
Our new identity reflects the renewal of our commitment to work
in partnership and to do all we can for those who need us most.”
New Identity
For its new name, the charity has taken inspiration from words
attributed to John Wesley, the founder of Methodism:
“Do all the good you can.
By all the means you can.
In all the ways you can.
In all the places you can.
At all the times you can.
To all the people you can.
As long as ever you can.”
Maurice Adams explains: “As part of our strategic review, we
considered the organisation’s identity and the way we present
ourselves. We had recognised for some time that the name we
adopted nearly 30 years ago no longer accurately reflected the
work we do – having been much more than simply a fund for
many years – and that it was not helping us in the challenging
tasks of raising our profile and increasing support. Our new name
and strengthened identity reflects our future role and vision, as
well as our Methodist roots and heritage".
Increasing Impact
All We Can will continue to provide long term development
support and emergency relief and undertake advocacy and
education on issues of social justice. As part of the charity’s plans
to increase its impact in the future, it also launched a new
initiative to help churches and faith-based organisations in poor
communities to effectively meet the needs of their neighbours.
Going Where the Need is Greatest
All We Can has always been committed to reaching the most
marginalised people where the need is greatest, and will continue
to focus on communities which are often overlooked and
underserved by larger agencies.
Revd Dr Martyn Atkins, General Secretary of the Methodist Church
in Britain, said: “John Wesley famously said ‘Go not only to those
that need you, but to those that need you most.’ One of the
important things about All We Can through its history has been
the focus upon people truly on the margins. Methodists have
great resonance with that idea that you listen to people who no
one else seems to care about and yet make enormous differences
to their lives.”
Do All You Can
British Methodism has always had a strong commitment to social
justice and practical compassion, and All We Can continues to
reflect those values. The charity is using the launch of All We
Can to invite Methodists to renew their commitment to doing all
they can to contribute to the alleviation of poverty and speak out
against injustice. Tim Baker, a volunteer coordinator for All We
Can in the Thames Valley Circuit, said: “All We Can is about
doing all that I can, all that we can, all that the people involved in
the charity and in Methodism can do to bring about a better,
safer, less broken world.”
Belonging at Oakwood Church
Last month the Broadcast featured an article on the finances of
Oakwood Church – if anyone would like to look again at this or refer
to it for information, a version is available in the church foyer. This
month we continue what will be a series of articles on our new life
together as Oakwood Church with a look at how people can belong to
the church.
The Church is the Body of Christ, and all people who trust in Christ
and seek to follow him belong together as the Church. Different
kinds of churches have different
practices and traditions to help
mark and celebrate this belonging
together in commitment to Christ
and to each other. Our Methodist-
Anglican partnership is set within a
much bigger and longer relationship
between the two churches, which
The beginning of the Anglican- allows for people to belong to both
Methodist Covenant in 2003 churches at once. We hope that
everyone who comes to worship at Oakwood Church will feel able to
think about making a public commitment to belonging together
through one or both of the church’s ways of recognising this.
Baptism and Confirmation
This is the practice of both the Methodist
Church and the Church of England. People
are baptised with water in the name of the
Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit – this
could be either infants presented by their
parents, or adults presenting themselves.
This is a sign of way that in Christ, God
cleanses us from sin, raises us to new life
within the Church and strengthens us by the
Spirit. Confirmation is the way in which the church celebrates that
the baptised person is confirmed in faith and particularly by the
reception of the Holy Spirit in their lives. If people are baptised as
infants then they are often confirmed later in life when they can
present themselves and make a personal commitment of faith. If
adults are baptised they are often, though not always, confirmed
immediately afterwards. The main difference between the two
churches is over who is authorised to confirm people. In the Church
of England a Bishop confirms people as a sign of belonging to the
wider body of Christ. In the Methodist Church, the authority given
directly by the Methodist Conference to all ministers serves to
represent the wider body of Christ, so it is usually the local minister
who confirms people. In Oakwood Church, in fact before we entered
our new phase of life together, we have already celebrated five joint
Anglican-Methodist confirmations which were carried out both by an
Anglican Bishop and the local Methodist minister acting together.
Belonging in the Church of England
The Church of England is the established
church and so all citizens have a relationship
with it through the parish system. Everyone
who lives in the parish may attend the annual
meeting and vote to elect the
Churchwardens, and may also approach the
church for weddings, baptisms and funerals.
However, not everyone who lives in the
parish attends services regularly!
To become fully involved in the life of the Church of England people
are first baptised and then confirmed. If you attend services regularly
and have been confirmed, you can ask to come on to the ‘electoral
roll’ and so become a voting member of the church’s statutory
processes. This also enables you to stand for office within the church,
e.g. to serve on the Parochial Church Council which directs church
life. It is also possible for people who are ‘members in good standing
of another Church’ (e.g. the Methodist Church) to be on the electoral
roll without being confirmed in the Church of England.
Belonging to the Methodist Church
The origins of the Methodist Church are as a
society within the Church of England.
Originally most Methodists were already
members of the Church of England but then
also became members of a separate
Methodist society. As the Methodists
evolved from societies into a Church, the concept of membership was
maintained. People who are baptised and confirmed then also
becomes members of the Methodist Church, nationally as well as in a
particular local church. As with the Church of
England, people can also join the Methodist
Church who have already been ‘members of
good standing’ in another Church. Each local
church keeps a list of its members, has
responsibility to look after its members and
to help them to grow in Christian faith. If
someone moves to a new area, membership
can be transferred between churches. A
membership ticket is issued each year to all
members, reminding them of their
responsibilities to worship, care, learn and
Methodist Church serve and evangelise (tell others about Jesus).
Membership ticket
Belonging together
Within Oakwood Church we will keep the usual record of the
Anglican electoral roll and the Methodist Church membership.
People on either list can enquire about becoming joint members and
so enter the other church’s way of belonging. New people coming
into the life of the church are encouraged to become jointly members
of both, though if they choose to become a member of just one of the
churches that is possible too.
Why belong?
The new logo for Oakwood Church was the
result of many people working on ideas
together. There was strong feeling that the
people joining hands were an important
symbol of the way that we belong together
as Christian people in this church.
You do not have to belong in one of these formal ways in order to
come to worship and to join in the life of the church. However, you
do need to formally belong to take a full part the life of the church by
voting in our meetings and taking up certain responsibilities.
Belonging in a formal way is a commitment which gives you a
special bond with everyone else in the church, and includes you in
our ways of caring for one another in Christian love and prayer.
Belonging also connects you not just with Christian friends in
Oakwood Church, but makes you part of the body of Christ across
the world. It can be an important step in your own developing
Christian faith as you make a new commitment, and receive the
blessings of special prayers from others.
If you would like to explore any of these possibilities for belonging
further, please talk to one the ministers, the Methodist church
stewards or the Anglican churchwardens.

Growing Poppies together for World War 1
Poppies will be grown in churches and church schools across the
new Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales as a joint act of
remembrance for the centenary of World War One
Poppy packets are being distributed to every church
school and church across the new diocese and
senior church leaders have designated Wednesday
30 April as Poppy Planting Day and are urging
everyone to join them and sow their poppy seeds on
that day to mark their identity as a new diocese
together and remember all those who lost their lives
in the Great War.
The new Diocese of Leeds, informally known as the Diocese of West
Yorkshire and the Dales, comes into being on Easter Day (20 April) when
the three existing dioceses of Wakefield, Bradford, Ripon and Leeds are
formally dissolved. The Rt Revd Nick Baines, the new bishop designate for
the new diocese said:
“A century is not a long time, but only 100 years ago the world fell apart in
the most violent way. This simple act of growing poppies reminds us of our
past and is a very visual way of pledging ourselves to serve together in the
future. I’m glad that our new diocese recognises the past while looking to
shape the future. I’m proud to commend this campaign.”
In the five areas that make up the new Diocese of Leeds (West Yorkshire
and the Dales) there will be a series of planting events on April 30 including
Leeds city centre, the army training camp at Harrogate, a church gardening
project at St Stephen’s Church, Bowling, Bradford, Wakefield Cathedral and
Christ Church Academy, Woodhouse, Huddersfield as well as hundreds of
other smaller events across the length and breadth of the new diocese.
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, welcomed the poppy planting
initiative and said: "Here in the grounds of Bishopthorpe, we too, are getting
behind this community initiative. I have been inspired by the parishes of the
new Diocese of Leeds (West Yorkshire and the Dales) and their shared
efforts to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great War”.
Advance Notice - Charity Market Stall
It has been decided that we will hold a Charity Market Stall
for our new Circuit and this will be in Leeds Market in order
to raise funds for Methodist Missions. Leeds East has
previously done these for a number of years and managed
to raise lots of money for Methodist Missions so we hope
that this year will be no exception.
A date has been booked for this and it is to be held on
Thursday, 3 July 2014. Once again the Stall will be on the
outside at Leeds Market and it is hoped that people from
the churches will help on the Stall as this is the only way
that we can cover it for the whole day. These
arrangements will be made nearer the time.
It is hoped that each Church in our new Circuit will be able
to help and we are hoping for donations from one. It
would be good if each Church could try to provide a box of
bric-a-brac and a bag of clothing to be sold on the Stall.
You do not have to keep to this amount - this is just a
guide point, but we are happy to have more if you can
provide more. I would like to stress that items should be
in good order and any clothing should be clean.
The donations for the Stall are required between Monday,
16 June and Wednesday, 18 June in order that they can be
priced up and ready to sell. I know that this is well in
advance of the Market but I actually go on holiday on 21
June and am not back until late on 29 June so everything
will have to be sorted before I go away.
If you have any items before this date they can also be
passed on to me as last year quite a lot of items were sold
before the Market. If you have any items please do contact
me so that arrangements can be made for me to receive
them early as I am able to store items prior to the above
dates.
Jean Hopkinson, Circuit Missions Treasurer
There is now a box in the Church porch. Please feel free to
leave anything you think will sell on the Market Stall.
If you fancy helping on the stall for an hour or so please
ring Jean on 0113 2933961 so that she can put you on the
rota.
THE BIG BLUE BIN
CHARITY COLLECTION FOR MAY
WILL GO TO ST GEORGE'S CRYPT
St George's Crypt - the charity in the City of Leeds, working
with the homeless, the vulnerable and those suffering from
addiction. If you would like to support this work through
donations of toiletries, tinned food (meat, vegetables, fruit)
and staples such as rice and pasta, sugar, tea, coffee please
leave your donation(s) in the Big Blue Bin in the porch at
Church during May.
Many thanks.
St George's Crypt is very grateful to the many churches,
schools, companies and individuals who support their charity
through food donations.
Every year, the Crypt receives over 15,000 tins and packets of
food from churches, schools and companies, which are
distributed to needy people accessing the Crypt daily. They
serve over 20,000 meals every year. Much of this food is
generously donated. Without these contributions, the Crypt
would be spending at least an additional £20,000 per year.
Thank you to everyone who contributes to our Big Blue Bin
collection each month and thank you, in advance, to all the
people who donate to St George's during the month of May.
St George's Nurture Cafes
Oxford Place and Trinity Church, Boar Lane
The cafes have been established by Nurture, a Community
Interest Company set up earlier this year to provide former
clients and residents of St George’s Crypt with the opportunity
to learn employability skills and to undertake on the job
training and experience in horticulture and catering.
Martin Patterson, Director of Fundraising said, “We are
delighted to be able to partner with Oxford Place Methodist
Church in reviving their café and allowing it to branch out in
such an exciting partnership.”
Dr Adrian Burdon, Superintendent Minister of The Methodist
Church at Oxford Place said, “St George’s Crypt and Leeds
Methodist Mission share a common concern for the vulnerable
people of this city. It is phenomenal that we can work
together on this project which brings our resources together
to make a difference.”
The Leprosy Mission
Following on from the article entitled The Beginning of The Leprosy
Mission in the April edition of The Broadcast I would like to bring you
up to date with the amount raised so far this year and to thank you so
much for your generous support of TLM.
We had a great start to the year when £380.47 was collected on
World Leprosy Day.
Our Wide Awake Breakfast and Car Wash which was held in March
raised £381.50. So many people gave time and energy to make sure the
event was a huge success. Seventy breakfasts were served so you can
imagine how hectic it was in the kitchen! Scout leaders and a few
scouts were kept busy trying to keep up with the demand for cars to be
washed and what a brilliant job they did too!
The final amount came from donations and Leprosy Mission boxes and
which totalled £136.53.
If my maths are correct you will see that £898.50 was collected and
sent to The Leprosy Mission but, as some of the amounts were gift
aided, the end result will be over £900.00!
Please see the posters on the noticeboard at the back of Church to see
what Hadjara from Niger had to say.
If you would like to consider having a Leprosy Mission box for your
small change then please see me in Church or ring me on 0113 2400715.
Thank you for all your support, Peggy Horne

Leeds Symphony Orchestra – 17th May 7.30pm – St Chad’s Headingley
I don’t normally place such adverts myself, but have been so impressed
with the LSO – and their programme of music – I couldn’t resist.
The programme on this evening includes pieces from Lalo, Berlioz,
Copeland and Villa-Lobos (Guitar Concerto). The finale is Holst’s ‘The
Planets’.
The tickets are priced at £10 – but get there early for a good seat (and park
so you don’t get blocked in). Another tip is order your drinks for the
interval as you come in.
See you there. Pete Oldfield
Church Family News from Oakwood Church
We send our condolences to Davina Hawkyard and her daughters
Hayley and Stephanie on the loss of Peter who dies in March.
Peter used to be a Churchwarden and Davina was the Verger at
St John’s for many years and we remember their service with
gratitude. We hold the family in our thoughts and prayers and
send our love and good wishes to them.
Congratulations with Edith Homes on the birth of her 9th great-
grandchild – and Paul & Charlotte on their recent wedding
anniversary.
We hold in our prayers Anne Hobson, the Barlow family, Barbara
Barker, and friends confined to their home, nursing home or
hospital. We send our love and blessing to you. We thank the
Lord for your forgiveness, healing love, mercy, grace, strength
and wisdom, and the knowledge that you walk with us always.
Best wishes to the group who are going to SHARPER – God’s
Word For Today’s World – at Cliff College. We are sure you will
have an exciting time and an amazing experience.
If your birthday is in May – we wish you a Happy Birthday.

Baby Bonding – Fund Raising
Some of you will have heard of a new group using the Church
facilities – Baby Bonding (a parent/baby group). On Friday 11th
April the group had a fund raiser for the charity Bliss
(supporting premature babies and their families) – and £120 was
raised through a puppet show and egg hunt.
Well done to all concerned.
Sorry that photographs couldn’t be included with this article as
it wasn’t clear if the correct permission had been obtained etc.
Next Nostalgia Meeting – 1.15pm on 2nd October
2014
World War One
The Nostalgia group met on 3rd April, our last until 2nd October
2014. Since we began on 17th October 2013 we have had 11 very
successful meetings. Attendances have been as low as seven and
as high as sixteen, healthy numbers for this sort of group.
Our chats have covered a variety of subjects: First memories;
History of Roundhay Methodist Church; Blackburn Aircraft
Factory; Shopping; The Lido and Children’s Day and Roundhay
Park; Jack’s visits to Seacroft Hospital (with a 90 year interval);
Christmas; Healthcare; The place I call ‘Home’; Pocket money
and treats; Trams and Transport; Organisations and Groups. We
did slip in a session trying to date an old map of Leeds. We think
we managed it – “just after the Second World War”. Who would
have thought looking at an old street map could be so interesting
and would trigger so many fond memories?
I am hoping we can put together a very special display about
World War One in time for Remembrance Day. It all depends on
how much information we are able to gather. You could help by
looking through your family archives, asking questions - even
doing a little research if you want to. I have prepared a hand-out
with useful tips and internet sources which you might find helpful.
You will find it at www.oakwoodchurch.info/nostalgia.html .
Our memories aren’t restricted to those who fought. There were
major impacts on family life during World War one and lingering
effects going forward. We hope you will gather family stories,
photographs, reports, records, medals, letters – anything that
makes memories of World War One meaningful to your family.
My Grandfather fought. I am fortunate to have a copy of his
service record, a photograph of him in his uniform and an unusual
tale about his younger brother. We don’t have Grandfather’s
medals; they were stolen from his home. What I do have is a
better understanding of the effect it had on him as a person, and
compassion for the difficult man I thought I knew.
Many of you will have objects, stories, photographs that you
would be willing to share. If you do please bring them along on at
1.15pm on 2nd October, or just come and listen.
At www.oakwoodchurch.info/roundhaystjohn.html you will find
information about the war dead remembered at Roundhay St
John. I have been trying to put together something of their lives –
a more personal view than gravestone or memorial – and am
hoping to have this research completed by October. It has been
difficult emotionally to gather information about boys and young
men who lived or had connections here in Oakwood. The sense of
loss of promising young life creeps into one’s emotions all too
often.
Their stories deserve to be told. We are the people they fought
and died for, so please find whatever you can and share it with
us.
