RING Chanisara The hit movie The Ring, starring Naomi
Chantharakhot Watts, is based off a Japanese movie
by called Ringu ("ring" in Japanese), and
Kōji Suzuki Ringu is based off of Koji Suzuki's novel
Ring Series #1 Ring. Most people probably know this
story from the former two sources, but I
thought Ring the book was excellent in its
own right.

Briefly, the story follows Asakawa, a
journalist, and Ryuji, a university professor,
as they try to solve the mystery of a
videotape that kills anyone who watches it
after seven days. One thing that grated on
me was Asakawa's character. I won't spoil
anything, but he ends up with a lot to lose
in this story, far more than Ryuji, and yet
he just lets Ryuji solve everything. If you
had that much at stake, you'd think you'd
put a little more effort into solving the
mystery, but time and again Asakawa
went to pieces when Ryuji couldn't figure
part of it out. Figure it out yourself!

The mystery is expertly crafted and the
story is a real page-turner. It's a smart,
multi-layered thriller, and I love Suzuki's
writing style; it's simple but somehow also
incredibly rich and engaging. There are
also periodic descriptions of aspects of
Japanese behaviour and culture.

All in all, Ring is a tremendous mystery
novel that hooks you early on and never
lets go. I think you'll enjoy it.

I love this series, which is both a
surrealist, fever-dream horror and
a dark commentary on social
perceptions of beauty and
ugliness, in both personality and
looks, as well as human
destructiveness. Well, if you want
to psychoanalyze.

Tomie is a horror - biological scifi
series of related short stories,
focused on an immortal woman
who has such beauty that it drives
people to jealous extremes, with a
maddening personality to match.
Any attempt to get rid of her will
just cause her to bio-regenerate
into more Tomies. Tomie is the
villain and the protagonist, the
victim and the perpetrator, all at
the same time. Anyone who
comes into contact with her,
regardless of age or gender, is
ultimately doomed.

The art, most noticeably, is effing
marvelous (and there's nearly 800
solid pages of it!!) A lot of
panorama drawings in minute
detail. The story is actually equally
as good, and inventive. With the
premise it has, I thought it
subverted or completely reversed
a lot of typical horror tropes you
would think it'd have.

and lack of motivation, but I will
say that this is one of the scariest
and most compelling horror novels
that I've ever read. I have not been
able to stop thinking about it.

overall I love the vibe of this I love
how it felt a lot like American
Horror Story murder house. I liked
the haunted house aspect where
you just slowly get the creeping
sense of dread as each new family
enters this home and establishes
themselves there kayoko, her

their black cat, it all unraveled so
beautifully and intricately as each
new person was exposed to the
story these people and this
environment.

I think that this should be more of
a universally consumed horror
product, it is so good and so
compelling and it was beautifully
and expertly told.
