MIKE’S NOTES 3
Tonight we look to the skies for the return of The Muny’s favorite nanny, soaring in after a much delayed visit.
As you may recall, Mary Poppins was first announced in Fall 2019 for our 2020 season—which, due to the
pandemic, ended up being our first (and hopefully last) online summer. Our hearts broke when we couldn’t offer
you Poppins for 2021’s slightly delayed, five-show season return. But the hard reality was that last year, this
extravagant, magical production would have sacrificed too much to material shortages, supply chain issues, and
myriad complications and constraints. (We all lived it, right?)
So there’s enormous joy in writing this for you now as I sit at a picnic table on the east lawn, listening to our
incredible cast ecstatically belt out “Step in Time” on the first day of rehearsal. All our Muny artists bring a
generous helping of joy and love to their work here, but the Poppins company seems particularly inspired. It’s been
a long wait for this spoonful of sugar.
Despite all the delays, our director and long beloved Muny family member John Tartaglia, choreographer Patrick
O’Neill, and music director Brad Haak never wavered in their commitment to The Muny. Nor did scenic designer
Paige Hathaway, costume designer Robin McGee, and lighting designer Rob Denton.
Corbin Bleu, our wonderful “Bert,” privately committed to play Bert right after his thunderously applauded
performance as Don Lockwood in Singin’ in the Rain. Bert was a dream role, he told me, and we are more than
happy to let him live that dream.
Last fall, I was thrilled to attend the opening night of Diana: The Musical on Broadway. I watched Jeanna De Waal
perform with extraordinary grace and thought “There’s our Mary Poppins.” Welcome, Jeanna, for your Muny debut.
We last produced Mary Poppins at The Muny in 2013, and it’s astonishing to realize that many of the members
of tonight’s audience weren’t even born then. I’m glad they’re here now, because since its film premiere in 1964,
Mary Poppins has held an iconic place in our culture. At our first rehearsal, John Tartaglia asked everyone in our
75-member cast who had seen the film, and everyone (from age 8 to age 80) raised their hand.
Forty years after the Oscar-winning film was released, Poppins finally became a Broadway stage musical. To create
the adaptation, Disney and producer Cameron Mackintosh brought in book writer Julian Fellowes (you might have
heard of Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age) and songwriters George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. Highly influenced
by the original books by P.L. Travers, the writers pulled even more depth, surprise and wonder from the Banks
family’s journey. You cannot watch this musical without realizing how much they need and love one another. It’s the
magic we sometimes forget how to see—until art brings it home again.
So maybe the wickedly wise pop-in nanny slyly engineered this delay all along.
This is a season of release, renewed joy, and discovery. In hundreds of beautiful
emails and letters, you’ve told us how happy you are to be back at The Muny and
how great it is to all be together again. Tonight, as Mary soars above you, take a
quick look around and see how many thousands of St. Lousans, old and very young,
join you in that magic.
According to Ms. Poppins, it’s always been there.
