MIKE’S NOTES 11

The return of The Sound of Music to The Muny feels like a joyous, long-awaited homecoming, one
that reminds me of watching all those families reunite at Lambert over the holidays. Given what
we’ve all been through in the past 16 months, could there be a better moment for us to revisit
this powerful story of love, faith, family and courage? The members of the von Trapp family have
come home to The Muny right when we need them most.

How beloved is this show in St. Louis? This is our 11th Muny production in 57 years. After
opening on Broadway in 1959, The Sound of Music first played The Muny in 1964, and the show
ran for three sold-out weeks. It returned four years later, in 1968, for two sold-out weeks. By
then, the 1965 film was a world-wide phenomenon, breaking Gone with the Wind’s box office
records and winning five Oscars, including Best Picture.

In St. Louis, the film ran for 83 consecutive weeks at Powell Hall; it was the last movie on the
marquee before Powell transformed into the sumptuous home for our Saint Louis Symphony
Orchestra. After 1968, The Sound of Music became a Muny regular, onstage every five or so years.

So, in 2021, “how do you solve a problem like Maria?” Handed those memorable lyrics and that
rich history, that legacy, how do we honor not just this musical but make it truly wonderful all
over again? My goal for you, every time you see a beloved, classic show on our stage, is that you
are not simply seeing “museum theatre.” We don’t just pull it all out from storage and slap it
together. With a show that’s been such a part of our lives and our culture, we have the obligation
to create a production that does more than remind you of the past. The 2021 Sound of Music
should renew your love for this show, give it fresh energy. This should feel like a fabulous date
night for a long-married couple—a night when they glimpse, with a thrill, a stranger they could
fall in love with all over again. And for the several thousand in the audience who have never seen
the show, this needs to be a first date they will remember.

In 2018, Ted Chapin, formerly of the Rodgers & Hammerstein organization and a long, great
friend to The Muny, let me know that The Muny could, at last, again produce The Sound of Music
in 2020. I immediately knew which director could “solve the problem,” looking at the show with
new eyes, directing it with his usual ingenuity, but also understanding what The Sound of Music
already means to Muny-goers.

In 2014, Matt Kunkel was a student intern in our directing program, and his insight, passion,
and dedication wowed every director he served—and everyone else backstage. Over the past
seven years, Matt has deepened his already vast knowledge of musical theatre and developed
and refined his distinctive talent. He directed our epic 100th anniversary gala for us. And he
adores The Sound of Music. With music director Ben Whiteley and
choreographer Beth Crandall (another Muny talent who worked her way
up the ranks), we had our dream team.

Tonight, the hills—and the park—will come alive with the sound of
music. Again, and for the first time.

FROM OUR SPONSOR 13

Welcome to Forest Park and The Muny’s production of The Sound
of Music. Or perhaps I should say welcome back to Forest Park and
The Muny. Like you, I’m very excited to once again have a summer
of wonderful shows at this historic St. Louis treasure.

Tonight’s show is a timeless classic that touches on a number of
themes: hope, compassion, determination and love, to name a few.
It’s also a story about the importance of family, and that’s a theme
we can relate to quite well at Edward Jones. We’ve been helping
clients and their families reach their goals – climb their mountains,
if you will – for nearly a century. It’s not what we do as much as it’s
simply who we are. It’s the natural outcome of our purpose, which
is to partner for positive impact to improve the lives of our clients
and colleagues, and together, better our communities and society.

We’re also a longstanding supporter of the arts, and we’re
particularly delighted to be involved with The Muny again this year.
Like our firm, which has been based in St. Louis since its founding in
1922, The Muny is a part of the fabric of our region. We’re grateful
for the opportunity to play our role in bringing tonight’s production
to life.

Thank you for your own support for The Muny. We’re glad
you’re here.

Enjoy the show!

The Man Behind the Gate #1 Greeting

As part of our celebration of Muny President and CEO Denny Reagan’s December 2021 retirement, we thought you might
enjoy an excerpt from a recent story about the Reagan family’s leading man—through the eyes of those who love him most.
Seeing him nightly in “his spot” inside Gate #1, you might think Denny Reagan actually lives at
The Muny. While the theatre has been his home away from home for more than 50 years, Denny
would be the first to say being Michelle’s husband of 41 years, dad to John, Maggie and Amy,
grandfather of seven and a son, brother and friend are truly his greatest accomplishments.

“When you think of an exceptional
human, that’s my dad,” says Amy
Reagan Hollo. “Hardworking, smart,
kind, fun…he’s all of that and more. All
the stories of kindness and reaching
out you’ve probably heard…it’s not an
act or a façade; he’s truly just that good
of a person.”
Michelle says Denny’s kids and
grandkids are absolutely his favorite
people.
“Denny is a great dad and our
grandkids just love him. Even when
our kids were little, he coached soccer
teams and would load them all up to
go play softball at Forest Park on just
three, maybe four, hours of sleep. Our
family has always known we are his
first priority.”
All three Reagan kids say they
appreciate their dad even more now
that they have families of their own.
“My dad is the first person I ever heard
say ‘nice guys finish first,’” says John
Reagan. “He’s proof that you can be a
good guy and still be very successful.”
