MIKE’S NOTES 3
Ohmigodyouguys… Elle Woods is back! And my how things have changed for her, and us, since her first visit to
The Muny in 2011, not to mention her Broadway debut in 2007.
I was a producer of the original Broadway production of Legally Blonde The Musical, so this show has been a
joyous gift in my life for almost 20 years. I have watched it first be dismissed as a trifling, silly inconsequential
idea (just like our heroine), then win an Olivier Award as “Best Musical,” and wind up acclaimed and
thunderously popular worldwide. Thanks to the audio recordings, thousands of high school productions, and
hundreds of YouTube clips, Legally Blonde has been embraced by a generation as their Broadway musical.
(Look around our packed house tonight, and you’ll see what I’m talking about.)
Because of COVID, we could not have our Muny auditions in person this year. For our annual dance call –
normally an intense event that draws hundreds of hopeful auditioners to St. Louis from all over the country
— we accepted video submissions. Tonight’s extraordinary choreographer, William Carlos Angulo, created a
dance combination using a ferocious musical cut from Act 2’s “Legally Blonde remix,” which we then posted
for auditioners to download. They were to learn in their own time, then submit their dance video to us as an
official audition. (We received more than 1,400 submissions, more than double the number of talented people
we would normally see in person.)
Then something epic happened. On their own, auditioners began posting their Muny audition tapes on TikTok.
Within hours, The Muny “blew up.” Hundreds, then thousands, then hundreds of thousands, then millions
worldwide were watching our dance cut and celebrating, commenting, asking about Legally Blonde at The
Muny. (My favorite was a woman from Australia who danced exuberantly in her living room and said “I don’t
know what a Muny is, but I want to go there!”)
Before our Legally Blonde The Musical auditions, #Muny on TikTok was at 372,000.
After our Legally Blonde The Musical auditions, #Muny on TikTok is at 34.4 million. -
Last summer, after an exhilarating opening night of On Your Feet!, the show’s sensational creative team–
director Maggie Burrows, choreographer William Carlos Angulo, music director Lon Hoyt, costume designer
Leon Dobkowski, and set designer Tim Mackabee–blocked my exit from the opening night party and made it
clear that I was not leaving in any functioning shape unless I promised, then and there, that they could create
Legally Blonde this summer. (They’d either heard a rumor or snooped around on my laptop, not sure which.)
Like Elle Woods, I know real talent and passion when I see it. I agreed instantly and made it out of the party
alive. I’m beyond happy with the outcome. You’ll see many of Maggie’s fresh directorial ideas, the full range of
William’s amazing choreography, and exciting contributions from Lon, Leon and Tim. Their love and respect for
the show is clear, and I’m honored they cherish the Muny audience so much.
I’ve also been happy to spend some more time with the character of Elle Woods, tonight played by our exciting
discovery, the magical Kyla Stone. Elle has joined Dolly, Mame, and Elphaba as
a true Broadway musical icon. Her story and journey are universally relatable,
and her character is inspiring. No matter what is thrown her way, no matter
how she is treated, she always responds with kindness. Her ability to recognize
the intrinsic value in everyone she meets is exactly what our world needs right
now. And her courage and tenacity are fierce. Underestimated at first, she has
earned her place as one of the greats.
Snaps! And enjoy….
