MIKE’S NOTES 11
When I was assembling the team to ease on down our Muny road, I felt a bit like Dorothy –
whenever I got lost and needed a friend to help guide me, someone miraculously appeared. And
every single time, their first words were: “I love The Wiz!’’
Boy, did I hear that a lot. Everyone – everyone – onstage and off – had a story about how The Wiz
shaped their career or their life, whether it was their love of the cast album, or the soundtrack
Quincy Jones produced, or the film starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, or seeing a stage
production that unlocked a piece of their heart.
This is a show whose legacy lives strong.
Originally produced on Broadway in 1975, The Wiz fast became a landmark. At that time, diversity
on Broadway was nearly nonexistent, and those few shows that celebrated anything African-
American tended to be revues. The Wiz was different. It wed one of the last century’s most popular
fairy tales to African-American soul, spirit and culture. More than just a fresh take on The Wizard
of Oz, it was a beloved story reborn with a specific energy, joy and style. Its sense of purpose made
it far more than a show: It was a sharing, a happening, a sort of revolution in joy. And everybody
came flocking to see. As one reviewer wrote and the posters then echoed, “The Wiz was a wow!”
Because the original production had such an intense 1970s vibe, though, as time went on, the
show got a little lost. The last national tour was in 1984, and there’s never been a Broadway
revival. Instead, the show became a cult classic, mostly performed by school and amateur groups.
Our last Muny production was 36 years ago.
Tonight, we’re renewing a powerful legacy. I was honored when the original author of The Wiz,
William F. Brown (along with his wife Tina Tippit), agreed to work with hilarious comedian/writer
Amber Ruffin to revise some of the script, bringing the humor into our time and taking a fresh
look at all these wonderful characters. Michael Smalls – son of the original composer and lyricist,
Charlie Smalls – also blessed our work. Tonight, along with the still extraordinary songs, you’ll
hear the world premiere of fresh dance arrangements by Zane Mark and new orchestrations by
Darryl Archibald, also our music director. Denis Jones, who has directed some extraordinary shows
in The Muny’s recent years, joined forces with the thrilling choreographer Camille A. Brown to
give The Wiz a 2018 vibe. Edward Haynes Jr.’s set, Leon Dobkowski’s costumes and Rob Denton’s
lighting all add their own wow factor.
Tonight a show with a proud legacy finds a bold new future – one with
brains, heart and courage. Its setting? Dorothy described it best:
“A world full of love, like yours, like mine. Like Home.”
