MIKE’S NOTES 11

As you watch tonight’s production of 1776—our first in 20 years—you’ll see an almost
unbelievable tale of vision, failure, frustration, and fortitude. I’m talking, of course, about
the historic members of the Continental Congress, who create a nation unlike any that
preceded it.
I’m also talking, in a more personal way, about Sherman Edwards, the composer and lyricist
of 1776. Edwards was a semi-successful composer and jazz pianist who logged some time
as a high school history teacher. He was inspired to write the songs for a musical about the
signing of the Declaration of Independence, a musical everyone thought was a terrible idea
and no one wanted to produce. This was America in the 1960s, and a story that celebrated
the fundamental idea of states united, of the quest for a common good and the brutal costs
paid in that pursuit, seemed hopelessly out of step with the times.
It was the playwright Peter Stone who, after initially turning down the show, realized that
the tumult of the ’60s made it exactly the right moment for 1776. Running through the
history of the United States was a trail of personal foibles, petty intrigue, and incongruous
circumstances, mixed in with noble desire and momentous vision. A musical about that
mixture, Stone reasoned, might help us understand not only who we were at our founding but
who we are today.
Sure enough, 1776 was a triumph, winning a long Broadway run and the Tony for Best
Musical of 1969. Now, as you watch tonight, you may have questions about the show’s
historical accuracy. You’ll find online all sorts of detailed examinations and dissections of
1776, but here’s what Peter Stone wrote:
“The first question we are asked by those who have seen—or read—1776 is invariably:
‘Is it true? Did it really happen that way?’ The answer is: Yes. Certainly a few changes
have been made in order to fulfill basic dramatic tenets. To quote a European dramatist
friend of ours, ‘God writes lousy theater.’ In other words, reality is seldom artistic, orderly,
or dramatically satisfying; life rarely provides a sound second act, and its climaxes usually
have not been adequately prepared for. Therefore, in historical drama, a number of small
licenses are almost always taken with strictest fact. But none of them, either separately or in
accumulation, has done anything to alter the historical truth of the characters, the times, or
the events of American independence.”
Our Muny creative team tonight has its own history of crafting thrilling dramatic productions,
including last season’s Gypsy. Director Rob Ruggerio has created several masterful
productions for us. Rob’s insightful attention to the characters’ truth and details inspires
us all. Luke Cantarella (sets), John Lasiter (lights), Alejo Vietti (costumes), James Moore
(music director) have all worked with Rob on many productions at The Muny and elsewhere.
Watching them collaborate is much like what you’re about to see
tonight. They are passionate, restless people committed to their
ideals, often giving up to each other in order to create a more perfect
artistic union.
It’s a pursuit that’s completely necessary—and never ends.

Artistic Director & Executive Producer

Treasury and Payment Solutions

Dear Fellow Muny Fans,

BMO Harris Bank is honored to be a part of bringing The Muny’s
production of 1776 to the St. Louis community.

Based on the events surrounding the birth of a nation, 1776 brings
to life the struggle our forefathers faced as they drafted and signed
the Declaration of Independence. With a mix of drama and humor,
the musical brings a human element to the pages of history as
John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson struggle to help
the country break free from Great Britain.

BMO Harris Bank is grateful for The Muny’s efforts to present award-
winning theatrical productions like 1776. We are honored to continue
partnering with The Muny to support the arts in our community.

Best wishes,

Dino Cannella
