MIKE’S NOTES 11
Tomorrow, Tomorrow, I Love Ya, Tomorrow…
For two generations, Annie has been one of the most popular and beloved musicals in the Muny
canon. When the show opened on Broadway in 1977, it surprised everyone. Set in the Great
Depression and based on an obscure, out-of-print comic strip whose popularity peaked during
World War II, Annie seemed an odd relic in the age of Sondheim and A Chorus Line. It featured
straightforward tunes, a kid and a dog, a cameo from FDR, and a story structure that was a 50-year
throwback to the Rodgers & Hammerstein era. In short, Annie seemed like a surefire loser.
Leapin’ lizards! Annie turned out to be a monster hit. The show sold out year after year, entertaining
and deeply satisfying audiences all over the world. Its first national tour actually took a hiatus from
a long-run in Washington, D.C., to come play The Muny for a historic two-week engagement in 1978,
just one year after it had swept the Tony Awards.
Annie inspired something very special in its audiences: laughter, tears, and a very specific zeal
that couldn’t quite be understood. Why else would people always sing out “Tomorrow!”—loudly
and enthusiastically—at the curtain call? The intensity of this audience response became its own
subject of speculation and conversation. It’s a plucky little girl and a dog. Why such passion?
I think the answer lies partly in something Little Orphan Annie’s creator, Harold Gray, said when
recalling his inspiration for the comic strip. Walking the streets of Chicago, he met a “ragamuffin”
named Annie. “I talked to this little kid and liked her right away,” Gray said, “She had common
sense, knew how to take care of herself. She had to.”
In her search for her parents, Annie embodies the spirit and strength of character we all wish we
had every day. She shows courage, resilience and, most important, optimism. In her clear-eyed
conviction that no matter what, somehow, someway, things can turn out all right if you just keep
trying, Annie opens up something powerful in us (and in Oliver Warbucks). Small children can speak
big truths. And when she takes this message to The White House, in a supremely silly moment that
becomes slyly profound, we see the power of this idea extended to the entire nation: “Harold Ickes,
stand up and sing!”
I love having this show and this idea and this character in this season. The Muny survived wars,
the Depression, and countless social, political and cultural turns, along with a few very real,
very harrowing obstacles, in its first century. And here we are. In the
audience, onstage and backstage, and throughout St. Louis and the
nation, we always believed that The Muny would have a tomorrow.
Because of that spirited optimism, that belief and resolve, we do.
We’re heading into our second century. Leapin’ lizards!

FROM OUR SPONSOR 13
Welcome to Forest Park and The Muny’s production of Annie.
This seven-time Tony Award-winning family favorite is a classic
with its delightful music and characters based on the popular
1920s Harold Gray comic strip, Little Orphan Annie. Annie’s story
endures because of her heart and her attitude, inspiring us to
always remember “the sun will come out tomorrow.”
The Muny and our firm both share a long history here in St. Louis.
The Muny was officially founded in 1919, and three years later,
Edward D. Jones Sr. opened his brokerage office downtown. Both
have thrived and grown, and continue to be important parts of the
fabric of our community because we aspire to make a difference in
the lives of those we serve.
Edward Jones is proud to sponsor this production and to support
the arts in our region. We hope you enjoy this evening’s performance.
Sincerely,
Jim Weddle
