3 Tonight, we redesign a dream. In 2012, my first season, we produced the Muny premiere of Dreamgirls, tagging it as a “30th Anniversary Production” timed from the Broadway original. It starred one of the show’s Tony Award winners, Jennifer Holliday, and while new to the Muny stage, it was in many ways a reconstitution. A valentine created so legions of passionate musical theatre fans could see a rarely produced masterpiece. Twelve years later, our theater is transformed — and so is the world. This is the famous Dreamgirls — but with heightened style and deepened insight. When audiences watched the original Broadway production, performers who are now icons — Ms. Holliday, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine — were thrilling discoveries. Their collective talents worked magic. We wanted you to have the same thrill tonight, so we spent months putting together an incredible company. Aisha Jackson (Deena) and Courtnee Carter (Lorrell) are new to the Muny family and two of Broadway’s rising stars. Aisha has five Broadway shows to her credit, and she was the first Black woman to portray Anna in Frozen. Courtnee comes to us from the Tony-winning revival of Parade, and before that Once on This Island. Nick Rashad Burroughs (Jimmy Thunder Early) created the role of Ike Turner in the original Broadway cast of Tina — The Tina Turner Musical (and if you were at The Fabulous Fox a few weeks ago, he was a thrilling Toulouse-Lautrec in Moulin Rouge). Aramie Payton was in the original Broadway and London productions of MJ the Musical, standing by as MJ himself. The remaining four principals are Muny family. Charl Brown was nominated for a Tony Award for his role as Smokey Robinson in Motown: The Musical, which he also performed in London’s West End. And he and Tiffany Mann were both in our historic, beautiful production of Smokey Joe’s Cafe, the Muny’s 2021 reopener after the COVID shutdown. As I watched Tiffany in that show, I yelled silently to the universe, “If I’m ever lucky enough to produce Dreamgirls again, please let Tiffany be available to play Effie.” She was available, and she said yes — so get ready. Finally, siblings Natalie and Robby Clater began their careers at The Muny in the 2012 production of Dreamgirls; they return as accomplished adults, amid rich careers. In 2012, we used many of the original Broadway costumes. Tonight, you’ll see an incredible original costume design by our beloved Leon Dobkowski (now on his 11th season with The Muny). Ed Haynes (sets) and Rob Denton (lights) have given a new sheen and style to the show’s electric energy, and Elaine McCarthy’s video work brings us along on the show’s time travel, 1968 to 1974, with stunning cultural context. Wig designer Kelley Jordan gives us everything we need to know about our characters’ changing lives. What stayed the same, anchoring Dreamgirls? Director Robert Clater and Choreographer Lesia Kaye, both of whom were part of the original productions. Robert was handed the Dreamgirls legacy, having worked with all the original companies alongside legendary director and choreographer Michael Bennett. While we’ll be using much of that original staging tonight, new work has been done to infuse a sensibility and perspective that we’ve gained since then. As we watch tonight’s show unfold, we are more aware of not just the destructive pressures of show business but the harsh realities of these characters’ lives in America. The cost of success is even steeper than lost love and friendship. We can now see more clearly the human price Black artists paid to enter a white-dominated show business culture. MIKE’S NOTES 3 Mike Isaacson Muny Artistic Director & Executive Producer In all gains, in all dreams, Dreamgirls reminds us, there may be painful losses. And in this case, tremendous creativity, power and beauty.
