MIKE’S NOTES 11
Singin’ in the rain,
I’m singin’ in the rain…
Bet that when you read these words, you couldn’t help yourself – you heard a glorious melody too.
Fast as that, your heart felt a little bit lighter.
When great music is wed to great words, a song enters through our ears, sails through our brains, and
lands in our hearts. There, it stays: a memory that will thread through the rest of our life. Each time we
hear even a fragment of that melody, we’re reminded of places we’ve been, people we’ve known, the life
we’ve lived.
A great song is a gift —one we’ll never tire of, outgrow or toss aside.
Written in the late 1920s by Nacio Herb Brown (music) and Arthur Freed (lyrics), “Singin’ in the Rain”
was first performed in a Broadway revue, and it became an instant hit. Recorded by hundreds of singers,
it’s been woven into soundtracks or used as background in many films. (For the true obsessives: Check
out Judy Garland’s joyromp rendition from the 1940’s Little Nellie Kelly; Bing Crosby and Rosemary
Clooney’s warm-bath take from their 1960s radio show; British pop singer Jamie Cullum’s 2003 hipster
jazz take. Each one’s a gem, on its own terms and in its own time.)
In 1952, MGM released the film Singin’ in the Rain, starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and a then
unknown Debbie Reynolds. A modest hit in its day, it is now understood and celebrated as the greatest
of all film musicals. As Marc Bruni, our director for tonight’s production, once said to me, “It’s just joy.
It’s a joy machine.” The film used a variety of existing songs (known as “catalogue” songs) by Brown
and Freed. It told a marvelous and hilarious story of Hollywood dealing with a moment of technological
transformation, the advent of the “talkies.”
What better season than our 100th to share a story that tells us the way to address terrifying change and
create a bright future is with a keen eye, a dash of courage, an open heart and lots and lots of song and
dance?
Tonight, our starring trio will dance right over the footprint patterns of those Hollywood legends, adding
to the joy they created. You’ll immediately recognize our Cosmo, Jeffrey Schecter, as last season’s
triumphant hero-in-a-toga-to-the-rescue. (If the memory’s a bit fuzzy, just picture him holding a script.)
In the iconic role of Don Lockwood, Broadway and Hollywood star Corbin Bleu’s thrilling triple-threat
talent and charm will lift your spirits. He’s the real deal. Finally, if our leading lady Berklea Going looks
familiar to you, she should: She was a Muny Kid. Then she grew up and became a Muny Teen. In her
college summers, she’s been in many of our ensembles and even played a few supporting roles. Tonight,
we’re over our moon to have her as our leading lady, representing the hundreds of extraordinary talents
who’ve found their artistic voice in The Muny’s first century.
And by the way, if you’re giggling at the gentle irony of the title of this show,
so are we.
But we’re singin’, and dancin’…
