MIKE’S NOTES 11

In these extraordinary times, we deserve a bit of distraction. And it’s easy to think of On Your Feet! as
just that: a delightful summer night’s entertainment; a generous celebration of the life and work of a
remarkable American artist.

Yet because these are extraordinary times, everything we do this season becomes more than we expected,
goes deeper, holds us closer. As we created and rehearsed On Your Feet!, its profound impact on all of us
was yet another stealth surprise.

You are about to learn that Gloria Estefan had no interest in becoming a singer. Born in Havana, Cuba, she
came with her family to Miami in 1959, escaping the Cuban revolution. In 1974, she became a naturalized
citizen. She attended the University of Miami to study psychology, and tonight’s story reveals her
transformation from an ordinary college student to an internationally renowned and beloved entertainer.
With her great love and husband Emilio Estefan by her side, she recorded multi-platinum albums, sold-out
legendary world-wide tours, received three Grammy Awards and the Presidential Medal of Freedom – so
many accolades that they fill their own Wikipedia page.

But now, in the summer of 2021, Gloria’s story is more than even the most extraordinary “behind the
music” profile. Her success came from commitment, perseverance, and belief against all odds—and
that combination is truer and more powerful than it would have been two years ago. As I mentioned in
my remarks before the opening of Smokey Joe’s Café, everyone in the theatre and the performing arts
has been out of work for 16 months. That’s been a hardship shared and endured by people across many
professions. But when I’m asked what this experience has been like for theatre people, the only way I can
explain it is this: It is not just what we do, it’s who we are. And for 16 months, we haven’t been able to be
who we are.

The Muny is among the first theatres in the world to re-open, and absolutely no other theatre in the
world has attempted to do what we’re doing: five new consecutive productions back-to-back. As
everyone streamed into The Muny – designers, the crew, the painters, the actors, the musicians – we feel
exhilarated, relieved, grateful, and proud to be part of this historic moment. But there’s also been a fair
amount of apprehension and fear. “Am I ready?” people wonder. “Do I still have it?” “Can I do what I used
to do?” “Am I, after these last 16 months, still who I think I am?”

This show looks at those very questions as they arise (not to give too much away) at a critical moment in
Gloria’s and Emilio’s story. Within its ridiculously joyous music and dance, On Your Feet! has also been,
for us, a welcome example of the way we’ve been invited to meet extreme
challenges—and the way love, patience and community can get us back to
who we are.

Here’s hoping it gets you on your feet, too!
