3 Mike Isaacson Artistic Director & Executive Producer MIKE’S NOTES Welcome to the opening production of The Muny’s 105th season: the highly anticipated Muny premiere of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. We’re so happy to see you back for what promises to be another thrilling Muny season. Over the past 12 years, I’ve learned that no matter where I go in St. Louis, I can usually count on someone approaching me to share their Muny story. Lasting 105 years gives a theater quite a legacy, and I’m always grateful to hear those stories. What’s been completely unexpected, however, is that since we announced this show, I’ve discovered that everyone also has a Carole King story. As I write, I have just finished a conversation with one of our fabulous Muny groundskeepers. She stopped me to say she got the Tapestry album when she was 12, and every day after school, she and her friends would listen to those songs over and over and over, eventually wearing out the LP. Yes, there are soundtracks to our lives – and Carole King gave us one of the greatest. In her personal notes to our company, our beloved director Marcia Milgrom Dodge wrote: “The songs by Carole King & Gerry Goffin, and those by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil (who create the vital competition to stay at the top), became the soundtrack for teenagers coming of age in the late 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Longings of love, agony of rejection, relationships, relationships, and more relationships, were the subject of these extraordinary young artists. These writers knew exactly how teenagers felt, and they set their heart’s struggles to music. I played the records over and over and now marvel at how these artists could see so clearly into our teenage souls.” Along with all the glorious music in this show, I hope you’ll find King’s own journey equally compelling. Carole King was an artist in a wholly male-dominated world, a pioneer finding her voice in a time and culture that had not even considered her, much less created a place for her. Her marriage to Gerry Goffin and her friendships with Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil offer us deeply human examples of the complicated and fragile marital and friendship bonds that give our lives shape, purpose, and occasionally, heartbreak. (Carole King did not see the entire show until well after its opening night on Broadway; she left halfway through the run-through because it was too painful to relive. But she came to love the musical, even doing a surprise performance onstage for its fifth anniversary.) One of the things I most love about shows like Beautiful, Jersey Boys, and Smokey Joe’s Café (known in the trade ‘jukebox musicals’) is that they wield even more power at The Muny. When you have thousands of people gathered in one place, experiencing story and song from a time they lived, the energy of that connection spreads through the audience. Its resonance is then amplified by the history and emotion that surrounds every Muny production. Generations of families have shared the Muny experience, surrounded by people with whom they’ve shared their lives. What is nostalgia but the memory of a life fully lived? And what better reason could there be for a musical? One fun historical note about tonight’s show. Its life began right here at The Muny, produced by my predecessor Paul Blake and his associate Mike Bosner. The earliest sketches of the script were, I’m told, read aloud for them by actors who were here to perform in other shows. Eventually, many St. Louisans became part of Beautiful’s successful Broadway production and national tours. Like the trees that are growing majestic on our new stage, The Muny’s roots go deep. As we set off on the great adventure of our 105th season, surrounded by family and friends, I hope you will be as grateful as I am to have those roots beneath you.

Equity fosters the art of live theatre as an essential component of society and advances the careers of its members by negotiating wages, improving working conditions and providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. Actors’ Equity is a member of the AFL-CIO and is affiliated with FIA, an international organization of performing arts unions. #EquityWorks DOUGLAS MCGRATH (Book) was a filmmaker and playwright. He directed the HBO documentary Becoming Mike Nichols. McGrath collaborated with Woody Allen on the screenplay for Bullets Over Broadway, for which they were nominated for an Academy Award. He wrote and directed the Oscar-winning Emma from the Jane Austen novel; Company Man; Charles Dickens’s Nicholas Nickleby, which won the Best Ensemble Cast from the National Board of Review; Infamous; and the HBO documentary, His Way, nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Nonfiction Special. His play Checkers opened the 30th anniversary season of New York’s acclaimed Vineyard Theatre. McGrath’s book for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical was nominated for Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards. He began his career as a writer for Saturday Night Live in what was incontestably the worst year in the show’s history. He also wrote essays on the arts and politics for the New Republic, the New Yorker, The Nation, The New York Times and Vanity Fair. Douglas McGrath passed away on November 4, 2022. GERRY GOFFIN (Words and Music) Born in Brooklyn in 1939, Gerry Goffin met Carole King at Queens College, and their musical collaboration began almost immediately. They married in 1959, and that same year wrote their first hit song “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” (The Shirelles). The duo penned more than 50 Top-40 hits including “The Locomotion,” “Natural Woman” and “Up on the Roof.” In 1987, Goffin and King were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Goffin has left an indelible mark on American music. CAROLE KING (Words and Music) Pop music would be very different without the contributions of Carole King, who at age 17 wrote her first #1 hit with Gerry Goffin, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” for the Shirelles. The dozens of chart hits Goffin and King wrote during this period became legendary, but it was 1971’s Tapestry that took King to the pinnacle, speaking personally to her contemporaries and providing a spiritual musical backdrop to the decade. More than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by over 1,000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles and six Grammys. BARRY MANN (Words and Music) has written the melodies of some of the most influential pop songs in musical history. In addition to “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” the most-played song of the last century, and the songs heard in Beautiful, he composed later standards like “Somewhere Out There” (winner of two Grammys), “Here You Come Again,” “Sometimes When We Touch,” “Just Once” and “Don’t Know Much.” Together he and Cynthia Weil amassed an incredible 112 pop, country, and R&B awards from Broadcast Music Inc. for significant radio air play. He has been inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
