MIKE’S NOTES 3

“Dear God, I am fourteen years old. I have always been a good girl.”

With these words, Alice Walker began her luminous 1982 novel The Color Purple, a series of letters (to God
and her sister Nettie) written by Celie, a poor, uneducated girl living in rural Georgia in the first half of the
20th century. The novel was an immediate sensation, winning both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book
Award for fiction. Its themes of courage, sisterhood, strength, and faith in the face of ignorance and cruelty
resonated worldwide.

Having been a part of the original Broadway producing team, I am thrilled this powerful story is on our stage.
I fell in love with this show from the first time I heard a demo recording of Celie’s “I’m Here.”

Here’s more history. In 1985, Steven Spielberg directed the hugely successful, Oscar-nominated film The
Color Purple, starring (then unknown) Whoopi Goldberg, the new star Danny Glover, and Oprah Winfrey in her
first film role. (Winfrey has often acknowledged the powerful force the novel has played in her life, writing
that she would “pass out copies of the book to friends and strangers alike.”)

Given the film’s stunning success, a Broadway adaptation seemed inevitable, and with Winfrey and Quincy
Jones aboard as producers, The Color Purple musical opened on Broadway in December 2005. Once on stage,
Celie’s story lent itself easily to song and dance, and the powerful bond between sisters Celie and Nettie
felt so natural for a musical. Audiences were rapturous. The show was so popular, it returned to Broadway a
decade later in a production starring Jennifer Hudson, Danielle Brooks, and Cynthia Erivo. A film adaptation
of The Color Purple musical just completed principal photography.

For the Muny premier of The Color Purple, we are thrilled to welcome the artistic team who won multiple
awards with a highly acclaimed production at Chicago’s Drury Lane Theatre in 2019. Joining our award-
winning director Lili-Anne Brown are her close (and brilliant) collaborators, choreographer Breon Arzell and
music director Jermaine Hill. Their generosity and passion in guiding this extraordinary company of artists
left me in awe.

First, they assembled an amazing cast—and you are about to experience their extraordinary voices and
performances. Our Celie, Anastacia McCleskey, comes to us from the Broadway productions of Caroline, or
Change and Waitress. She confided that she had turned down two other theatres who asked her to play this
part, but she wanted to play it at The Muny. Her sister Nettie is played by our dear Nasia Thomas, returning
after thrilling us last year in Smokey Joe’s Cafe. Making their Muny debuts are Tracee Beazer as Shug, Evan
Tyrone Martin as Mister, Gilbert Domally as Harpo, and Nicole Michelle
Haskins as Sofia. They inhabit those roles.

All that theatrical energy was aimed at one goal: celebrating the vision of
Alice Walker. And I think its best that she get the last words here:

“Love. That’s what this story is really about. You know how big love is? Love
is big; love can hold anger, love can even hold hatred. It’s about what you’re
trying to give.”
