MIKE’S NOTES 11

For this, our final show of the first season of the second century, a little child shall lead—and startle,
and amuse, and inspire. In 1988, famed British author Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)
published Matilda, the story of a precocious young girl with clear, gentle eyes, trapped in a dodgy
world full of the selfish, the mean, and the misbegotten. With quiet conviction, Matilda rewrites her
own story, fearlessly creating a new world full of imagination and goodness. Matilda’s world repels
and mocks cruelty, and ultimately guides her to a blessed new home.

In 2010, no less than the famed Royal Shakespeare Company created a musical version of Matilda,
with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and a script by Dennis Kelly. The show was an instantaneous
hit, transferring to London’s West End (where it’s still running) and winning seven prestigious Olivier
Awards (a record only recently tied by Hamilton). Broadway was next, in spring 2013, and Matilda
received similar acclaim on that stage, running for nearly four years and winning five Tony Awards.
Unfamiliar with Matilda (the book and the show), I wanted to see what all the buzz was about, so I
went to an early Broadway preview. I found myself surrounded by dozens of girls and young women,
which wasn’t really a surprise. What gobsmacked me was they’d come to the performance clutching
their copy of the book. As the show unfolded, I began to see what was going on around me. Matilda
was more than a heroine to this audience: She was a sister, a pioneer, a fellow book club member,
a soulmate. And she’d been given brilliant life by Tim Minchin’s music and lyrics, which were, like
Matilda herself, uncompromisingly smart, refreshing and humane. By intermission, I was dreaming
of Matilda’s inevitable Muny premiere.

As we began creating our Muny Matilda, I read the book. As I turned the pages, I kept “seeing” all
of those incredibly strong, bright, iconic girl images created by St. Louis’s own Mary Engelbreit. You
know her girls—bespectacled, legs planted, bonneted, with wise and beguiling smiles. Those girls
are intelligent and resilient; you can just tell. A browse through Engelbreit’s website confirmed my
hunch: “Yep, there’s our Muny Matilda.”

Fortunately, tonight’s director (and veteran Muny visionary) John Tartaglia knew Mary’s work, and
he loved the idea. His entire design team—Leon Dobkowski, costumes; Paige Hathaway, sets; Rob
Denton, lights; Kelley Jordan, wigs; Nathan W. Scheuer, video—embraced the idea of a production
inspired by the world of Mary Engelbreit.

I love that we’re ending this historic Muny 101 with this show. When Matilda sings, “Nobody but me
is going to change my story,” she’s echoing exactly what we’ve done this season. Our marvelous new
stage has added even more excitement, artistry, imagination, and inspiration. Onstage, backstage
and in the audience, too, we’ve rewritten The Muny’s story.

Our transformation is one more example of how great and new and
beautiful things are created in St. Louis. We can rewrite our story.

Have a great year and we’ll see you for Muny 102!
