MIKE’S NOTES 11
When Gypsy opened on Broadway in 1959, the legendary writer Walter Kerr gave it a quote that
became theatre legend: “The Best Damn Musical I’ve seen in Years!”
Since then, Gypsy’s reputation has only grown — exponentially. Now, nearly 60 years later,
it is considered to be one of the best, if not the best, American musical ever. Based on the
autobiography of Gypsy Rose Lee, the show focuses on Mama Rose, a mother of two who strives
to give her daughters a life in show business. But vaudeville is sinking as they struggle to rise.
An astounding dream team of historic and prolific talents came together to create Gypsy : Jules
Styne, music; Stephen Sondheim, lyrics; Arthur Laurents, book; and Jerome Robbins (hopefully
you recognize that name!) as director and choreographer. Epic in idea and story, Gypsy is the
King Lear (Queen Lear?) of musicals. Its original star was Ethel Merman, and many claim it was
her best work. Since then, a list of eminent artists have played Mama Rose, including Tyne Daly
and Angela Lansbury at The Muny, Patti LuPone and Bernadette Peters on Broadway, and Imelda
Staunton in London.
When I began planning this epic year, I desperately wanted Gypsy to be part of it. As we
celebrate our first Muny century, let’s also note and celebrate the greatness of the American
musical, this beautiful, elastic, stirring, spellbinding art form that is uniquely and totally ours.
To get perhaps a little too serious about it all, if Shakespeare was Britain’s primary contribution
to world theatre and culture, the musical is ours. We created it, and we continue to evolve it and
celebrate it. For hundreds and hundreds of years to come, people throughout the world will be
attending and talking about musicals.
And Gypsy will still be performed.
The show has a musical’s ideal blend of story, song and dance. It makes you laugh and breaks
your heart. Its dramatic arc foreshadows some of the most beautiful places musicals have gone
since 1959. Gypsy is the mother of them all.
And tonight? Talk about a dream team. The wildly talented people who have created our Muny
production – Rob Ruggerio, director; Ralph Perkins, choreographer; James Moore, music director
– have been a part of some exciting productions over the past years, including (a now legendary)
Hello, Dolly! starring tonight’s leading lady, the Tony Award-winning Beth Leavel.
Ah yes, Beth Leavel, or Dame Beth Leavel of The Muny, as she’s referred to around here. Beth has
been a part of the Muny family for more than 20 years, and on stage
and off, Beth is a star. Her talent, heart and spirit fill every character
she plays with a particular light, and she inspires all of us who work
with her. To see a monumental talent star in a brilliant show is a joy; it
is a theater living its greatest purpose in its most historic year.
