MIKE’S NOTES 3
When we set out to create tonight’s production of Camelot–our first in 13 years—director Matt Kunkel and I asked
each other, “Exactly why is Camelot a ‘classic’?”
The answer isn’t obvious. Camelot was Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s follow-up to My Fair Lady, the 1956
triumph that galvanized popular culture as swiftly as Hamilton did. Based on T.H. White’s 1959 novel The Once and
Future King, Camelot reunited Lerner & Loewe with My Fair Lady director Moss Hart and star Julie Andrews, adding
Richard Burton as King Arthur and a brilliant unknown named Robert Goulet as Lancelot. What could go wrong?
Everything. The show’s first out-of-town preview ended at 12:40 a.m. Alan Jay Lerner got a bleeding ulcer. Moss Hart
had a heart attack. After a stop in Boston (the show still too long), Camelot opened on Broadway in lumbering form.
Julie Andrews had to learn a new song on the day of the first preview. Reviews were mixed, the chance of success
dubious.
But then, Hart got out of the hospital and, with fresh eyes, cut 40 minutes from the show. (You can hear the two
deleted songs on the recording). Around that same time, Ed Sullivan asked Burton and Andrews to perform four
numbers from Camelot on his television show—the first time in history that television was used to sell Broadway.
The next day, the line at the box office wrapped around the block.
Camelot solidified its place as a classic, though, in the historic interview Jackie Kennedy gave to LIFE magazine a
week after her husband’s assassination. She mentioned how often, late at night, President Kennedy listened to the
Broadway cast recording of Camelot, and how he much loved the lyrics: “Don’t let it be forgot/that once there was a
spot/for one brief, shining moment/that was known as Camelot.” With that article, Camelot entered U.S. history.
Three generations later, we have the opportunity (and privilege) of asking ourselves what makes Camelot a classic
for us. So Matt and I talked it through. First, the music and lyrics remain joyous and deeply moving (and I side with
those who find the score superior to My Fair Lady). Second, since the original production, the script has gone around
the world, revised in many different productions and at the inspiration of a series of stars (Richard Harris, Robert
Goulet as Arthur, Richard Burton again…). In the past, The Muny has made use of many of those revisions. Tonight’s
edition, though, was adapted by renowned television and theatre writer David Lee, and when Matt and I read it, we
were thrilled. Here was the beloved story (with all the best songs) told in a fresh, contemporary way. Even better,
it offered a theatrical style and storytelling method that I had been searching for since 2012. It was the sort of
adaptation that honors a classic by allowing it to breathe fresh air—and prove its timelessness.
Finally, do you remember the critical eye and creativity that Matt and choreographer Beth Crandall brought to last
season’s The Sound of Music? They and their colleagues have pulled it off again, reimagining without losing the
essence. By staying anchored in the truth of the show—how the personal affects the
political; how creating a just society is a never-ending project; how society embeds
its dreams in the young—they invite you to see something new and shining in this
production.
Something new and classic. A moment that cannot be forgot.
