3 Welcome to the opening production of The Muny’s 106th season and the highly anticipated return of Les Misérables. We are so happy you are here for another Muny summer! Les Misérables is epic musical theatre, a contemporary masterpiece that inspires audiences’ passions and loyalties like few musicals in my lifetime. The story is rich and powerful; the characters filled with ambitions, dreams and flaws; the music bold, splendid and unforgettable. As our director told the company at the onset of rehearsals, Les Miz (its customary nickname) will always be “the people’s musical.” Since its 1985 premier, 130 million people in 53 countries have seen it — and have heard it in 22 languages. The original Broadway production played for 16 years. As you read this, productions of Les Misérables are in Belgium, Holland, Japan, a U.S. national tour and London’s West End, where it has been running since 1985. The first Muny production of Les Miz was in 2007, our second in 2013. Tonight’s production will be like no other before it. Our remarkable director, Seth Sklar-Heyn, along with our longtime Muny colleague James Moore and choreographer Jesse Robb (a 2024 Tony nominee for Broadway’s Water for Elephants), make up the core artistic team supervising the current Les Misérables national tour. (On behalf of Les Miz’s original producer, the legendary Sir Cameron Mackintosh, Seth also serves as executive producer of Les Misérables companies in the U.S.) It would have been so easy for all of them to simply reproduce exactly what they know on our stage. Yet in our first conversations nearly two years ago, Seth made it clear that he didn’t want to replicate any production in the worldwide Les Miz stable. He wanted something new, something specific, something that uses the “full Muny.” Well, tonight, here it all is. A full orchestra; a big, cinematic set; a world-class cast; the turntable and lifts; both Muny Kids and Muny Teens; hundreds of costumes and wigs; and oh, what the heck, 20 members from the St. Louis Symphony Chorus to storm the barricades with us. We dreamed our own dream: a show that would soar, lifting us all aloft with its power, glory and stirring beauty. For that, we needed tonight’s cast, a cavalcade of rich talents and kind people. After last season’s marvelous production of Chess, I received dozens of emails with variations on the same threat: “Bring back John Riddle … or else.” So John has come home as our Valjean, passionately pursued by Jordan Donica’s unforgettable Javert. It would be madness for me to try to dissect all the reasons Les Misérables continues to enthrall the world. But it would be just as foolish not to acknowledge the source of it all: the original novel, written by Victor Hugo. In a letter to his Italian publisher, Hugo wrote: You are right, sir, when you tell me that Les Misérables is written for all nations. I do not know whether it will be read by all, but I wrote it for all. The sores of the human race, those great sores which cover the globe, do not halt at the red or blue lines traced upon the map. In every place where man is ignorant and despairing, in every place where woman is sold for bread, wherever the child suffers for lack of the book which should instruct him and of the hearth which should warm him, the book of Les Misérables knocks at the door and says: “Open to me, I come for you.” Already, you can hear the people sing. 44 LES MISÉRABLES XXXXXXXXXXXX STORY SYNOPSIS ACT ONE PROLOGUE: 1815, DIGNE Jean Valjean, released on parole after 19 years on the chain gang, finds that the yellow ticket-of-leave he must, by law, display condemns him to be an outcast. Only the saintly Bishop of Digne treats him kindly. Still, Valjean, embittered by years of hardships, repays him by stealing some silver. Valjean is caught and brought back by the police, but he is astonished when the Bishop lies to the police to save him, also giving him two precious candlesticks. Valjean decides to start his life anew. 1823, MONTREUIL-SUR-MER Eight years have passed, and Valjean, having broken his parole and changed his name to Monsieur Madeleine, has become both a factory owner and Mayor. One of his workers, Fantine, has a secret illegitimate child. When the other women discover this, they demand her dismissal. The foreman, whose advances Fantine has rejected, throws her out. Desperate for money to pay for medicines for her daughter, Fantine sells her locket and her hair, then joins the whores in selling herself. Utterly degraded by her new trade, she gets into a fight with a prospective customer and is about to be taken to prison by Javert when the “Mayor” arrives and demands that she be taken to the hospital instead. The Mayor then rescues a man pinned down by a runaway cart. Javert is reminded of the abnormal strength of the convict 24601, Jean Valjean, a parole-breaker whom he has been tracking for years but whom, he says, has been recaptured. Valjean, unable to see an innocent man go to prison in his place, confesses to the court that he is prisoner 24601. At the hospital, Valjean promises the dying Fantine that he will find and look after her daughter, Cosette. Javert arrives to arrest him, but Valjean escapes. 1823, MONTFERMEIL Young Cosette has been lodged for five years with the Thénardiers, who run an inn. They have horribly abused the little girl, whom they use as a skivvy, while indulging their own daughter, Éponine. Valjean finds Cosette fetching water in the dark. He pays the Thénardiers to let him take her away to Paris. 1832, PARIS Nine years later, there is a great unrest in the city because of the likely demise of the popular leader, General Lamarque, the only man left in the government who shows any empathy for the poor. The urchin, Gavroche, is in his element mixing with the whores and the beggars of the capital. Among the streetgangs there is the one led by Thénardier and his wife, which sets upon Jean Valjean and Cosette. They are rescued by Javert, who does not recognize Valjean until he has gone. The Thénardiers’ daughter, Éponine, who is secretly in love with the student, Marius, reluctantly agrees to help him find Cosette, with whom he has fallen in love. At a political meeting in a small café, a group of idealistic students prepare for the revolution they are sure will erupt following the death of General Lamarque. When Gavroche brings news of the General’s death, the students, led by Enjolras, stream out into the streets to whip up popular support. Only Marius is distracted by thoughts of the mysterious Cosette. Cosette is consumed by thoughts of Marius, with whom she has fallen in love. Valjean realizes that his “daughter” is changing very quickly but refuses to tell her anything of her past. Éponine brings Marius to Cosette and then prevents an attempt by her father’s gang to rob Valjean’s house. Valjean, convinced it was Javert lurking outside his house, tells Cosette they must prepare to flee the country. On the eve of the revolution, the students and Javert see the situation from different viewpoints; Cosette and Marius part in despair of ever meeting again; Éponine mourns the loss of Marius; and Valjean looks forward to the security of exile. The Thénardiers, meanwhile, dream of rich pickings underground from the chaos to come. INTERMISSION ACT TWO The students prepare to build the barricade. Marius, noticing that Éponine has joined the insurrection, sends her with a letter to Cosette, which is intercepted at Rue Plumet by Valjean. Éponine decides, despite what he has said to her, to rejoin Marius at the barricade. The barricade is built, and the revolutionaries defy the army’s warning for them to give up or die. Gavroche exposes Javert as a police spy. In trying to return to the barricade, Éponine is shot and killed. Valjean arrives at the barricade in search of Marius. He is given the chance to kill Javert but instead lets him go. The students settle down for a night on the barricade, and Valjean prays to God to save Marius from the onslaught that is to come. The next day, with ammunition running low, Gavroche runs out to collect more and gets shot. The rebels are all killed, including their leader, Enjolras. Valjean escapes into the sewers with the unconscious Marius. After meeting Thénardier, who is robbing the corpses of the rebels, Valjean emerges into the light only to meet Javert once more. He pleads for time to deliver the young man to a hospital. Javert lets Valjean go, and — his unbending principles of justice having been shattered by Valjean’s own mercy — Javert throws himself into the swollen River Seine. A number of Parisian women come to terms with the failed insurrection and its victims. Unaware of the identity of his rescuer, Marius recovers in Cosette’s care. Valjean confesses the truth of his past to Marius and insists that, after the young couple are married, he must go away rather than taint the sanctity and safety of their union. At Marius and Cosette’s wedding, the Thénardiers try to blackmail Marius. Thénardier says that Cosette’s “father” is a murderer and as proof produces a ring that he stole from the corpse in the sewers the night the barricade fell. It is Marius’ own ring, and he realizes it was Valjean who rescued him that night. Marius and Cosette go to Valjean, where Cosette learns for the first time her own history before the old man dies.

46 THE CRAWFORD TAYLOR EDUCATION INITIATIVE XXXXXXXXXXXX JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, 2022 The Crawford Taylor Education Initiative develops new arts education opportunities while supporting The Muny’s ever-evolving lineup of programs. This initiative strives to provide unprecedented, hands-on instruction and mentoring to young people who want to pursue a career in musical theatre, onstage or behind the scenes. Our current programs include:   THE MUNY KIDS + THE MUNY TEENS These performing troupes serve as goodwill ambassadors across St. Louis and the surrounding region. A performance and training ground for talented young people, this intermediate to advanced-level program spotlights children and teens who demonstrate exceptional voice and dance talent, stage presence, dedication and discipline. TECHNICAL THEATRE TRAINING (T3) T3 was created to expand the network of craftsmen, artisans and theatre professionals who work both locally and nationally in the entertainment industry. This program provides unprecedented training and mentorship to high school students in the industry of technical theatre, helping to create a clear path to success in these fields after high school. EDUCATION CLASSES Students are given a unique opportunity to further their training through area-specific offerings and one-on-one engagement with musical theatre professionals in our Audition Workshop, BFA Bootcamp, Musical Theatre Dance class and many other offerings. 46

XXXXXXXXXXXX 47 INTERNSHIPS Interns at The Muny participate in the creation of seven full-scale musical theatre productions over 10 weeks. The environment is intense, the stakes are high and the rewards are endless. Interns have the unique opportunity to work closely with union professionals from IATSE, USA, SDC, AFM and Actors’ Equity Association. THE MUNY SUMMER INTENSIVE This three-week program held at Webster University invites rising high school juniors and seniors from across the nation to experience the training and performance opportunities of the esteemed Muny Teens! Participants perform in a Muny production, attend masterclasses led by some of The Muny’s biggest stars, and challenge themselves in collge-level courses led by Webster faculty members as well as other industry professionals. MUNY IN SCHOOLS This program partners with various St. Louis-area schools to offer several opportunities. Elementary and middle schoolers can have guest performances and talkbacks with the Muny Kids & Teens troupes. Middle and high school theatre programs can request a Muny Audition Workshop to better prepare their students to audition for school productions — or even for the Muny stage. And high school theatre teachers are able to rent Muny props at a reduced rate.
