3 Mike Isaacson Artistic Director & Executive Producer MIKE’S NOTES Who can believe it? Here we are: the final production of The Muny’s 105th season. A year ago, looking out at the shows for this season, could we have imagined that the most topical and timely would be…Sister Act? As I write this, the Archdiocese of Saint Louis has announced a pause in their “All Things New” decree, their plan to consolidate 178 parishes into 134 and reassign 158 priests. Sister Act, if you don’t already know, tells the funny and heartfelt tale of a lounge singer who uses a convent as a witness protection haven — and once there, discovers that the sisters’ community may be shuttered. The inevitability and reality of change — why it happens, who makes it happen, to whom it happens to (and to whom it does not) — has played a part of many of our shows this season, Beautiful, Rent, and West Side Story being the most obvious. But Sister Act adds a new, powerful dimension to this group. Within all its fun, Sister Act asks us to ponder the presence of faith. As we meet life’s momentous and inevitable changes, in whom and with whom do we place our faith? As our good sisters learn to boogie and new voices are heard, the path to transformation becomes joyous for some, confounding for others. Yet as they each find their own way to navigate change, their bedrock faith in their community guides their way. What a perfect story to end this marvelous 2023 Muny summer. As an institution (which is really just a bunch of people working well together), we are constantly in awe of the faith our community places in us. I’ve said it from the stage, but read it here, too: You are a great audience. Seriously great. Each week, you’ve returned ready for a grand new adventure, and all the moments of laughter, joy, beauty, wonder, sadness, and power we’ve experienced this summer have felt rich and real because of you. You approach these shows with open hearts and minds, and you respond with honesty and passion. For all of us who spend the year creating for you, that’s a gift. Your connection to the music of Carole King; your joy and awe at Beauty and the very different, dizzying electricity of Chess; your intense passion and taut silences during West Side and the wicked glee at Little Shop; your deep, moving union with Rent…. This season held many moments when, on a summer night in Forest Park, under trees, stars and skies, thousands of St. Louisans lived and breathed as one. I’m a bit of a dreamer, and I’d like to believe (there’s that faith dimension again) that when The Muny unlocks its fullest powers, we inspire our community to communion. That, in the end, is what The Muny is about, and will always be about. Unchangeably. This is a perhaps long-winded way of writing thank you, once again, for having such faith in us, and for being committed to world-class musical theatre on our glorious stage. It’s been an epic summer, and we look forward to seeing you all again in 2024. Now, let’s Boogie!
