MIKE’S NOTES 11
So we made it. We’re here! The closing show of the 103rd Muny season: the sensational Chicago.
As I write these words, I am looking out my window at the backstage lot, and I have to stop for a minute,
swept away by this tide of awe and gratitude for everyone who has been a part of this summer. This
includes you.
In an ordinary year, the Muny season is this odd Brigadoon time warp – so fast, so intense, and then, as it
winds down, we look at each other and ask “Did we really do it? Did this happen?” This year, though? It’s
going to take more than a few weeks to comprehend the 103rd.
Here is what I know now: No other theatre in the world has done what we’ve done. If you were following
the news, you watched the London theatres open, then get shut down. On Broadway, only two shows are
running so far, one with a sporadic performance schedule. Throughout the rest of the world, there were
lots of stripped-down outdoor productions, and many theatres just stayed shut altogether.
In this pandemic, The Muny accomplished a miracle. No other theatre in the world created five
consecutive productions that were fully staged, fully costumed, fully designed, fully robust. And we did
it all within eight weeks. Best of all, as I write this, thanks to a great deal of sacrifice, discipline, and a
brilliant COVID compliance and administrative team, everyone—onstage, backstage, and as far as we can
tell, in the audience—has remained safe and healthy.
When someone writes the book on The Muny’s second century, I’m thinking this chapter will be the page
turner. It’s been filled with suspense, harrowing challenges and plot twists—and it ends triumphant.
The weight and honor of our history was more present this summer than in any of the ten seasons I have
witnessed firsthand. Including our hundredth.
What helped us decide to take on the challenge of producing this season, under extraordinary and
nerve-wracking circumstances, was our reluctance to break the chain of our history for two seasons in
a row. One of the covenants The Muny makes with you is that we will be here for you, as we were for the
generations before you and intend to be for the generations who come after you. This is a sacred trust,
and at no time has it felt more necessary—or more tenuous—than this season.
Denny Reagan lived his entire adult life in service to that promise. He leaves his role as president and CEO
at the end of this year, after 53 years at The Muny. In the 11 years we have worked together, I have learned
there is only one thing that matters to Denny: everyone doing everything to
make sure The Muny will be here forever.
That was the final impetus we needed. In our 103rd season, everyone
connected with The Muny wanted to honor Denny’s lifelong commitment to
this theatre, and to you.
See you for 104. Be safe.

Good evening, and welcome to the final show of our 103rd season.
After nearly two years of not sharing nights of musical theatre under
the stars together, it sure felt good to be back.
As this special season comes to a close, I wanted to personally say
thank you. Thank you for not only joining us tonight, but for the
incredible amount of support you’ve given me throughout my career,
30 of which I’ve had the honor to serve as president and CEO.
When asked what my favorite part of the job (if I can even call it that)
is, my answer has always remained the same: you. It’s the people that
make this place so special and this “job” so rewarding.
Denny Reagan
President & CEO
Over the past five decades, I have seen numerous generations of
Muny-goers come through our gates and create lasting memories with
family, friends and patrons who became friends with each passing summer. Standing in my “spot”
on the right side of the theatre nightly for 46 years has allowed me the great privilege to become
friends with so many of you. Thank you for that.
Thank you to the countless subscribers who are, and always will be, the lifeblood of this theatre.
Thank you to our generous donors and corporate sponsors who choose time and time again to
support this incredible institution. Thank you to the board for their leadership. Thank you to the
staff and administration who keep our day-to-day operations running smoothly. To our casts,
creative teams, crews, seasonal staff and everyone in between, thank you. I’ve always felt we had
the best team in show business.
That said, I have had the best teammate by my side for the past 42 years. I cannot express the
deep appreciation, love and respect I have for my wife, Michelle. Without her strength, unwavering
support and love, none of this would have been possible. There will never be enough gratitude.
Thank you.
Rest assured, however, this isn’t goodbye. I’m just moving spots. Instead of greeting you each
night, I will be joining you, alongside Michelle, our three children and seven grandchildren. I’ll be
swapping out the sport coat and title of president and CEO for a golf shirt and the title of husband,
dad and grandpa.
For 103 years, the St. Louis community has supported and believed in this theatre and made it a
part of their summer tradition. I have no doubt you will continue that inspiring support well into
the next 100 years of Muny magic.
Thank you for giving the best years of my life to me. I can say wholeheartedly that my career has
been dedicated to an institution and community that I have been so proud to be a part of.
The first show I saw at The Muny was Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady during our golden
anniversary season in 1968. One of my favorite songs is in that show - “I Could Have Danced All
Night.” It has been an honor dancing with you, our Muny audience, these past 53 years. Thank you.
With gratitude,
5413
In advance of President and CEO Denny Reagan’s
December retirement, and to honor his incredible
legacy, we are proud to announce the:
Denny Reagan
Endowed Fund
Denny has been known to say his current role isn’t
too much different than his first role cleaning up
the theatre every morning after a show.
“
As a picker, I made sure the theatre was
ready for the next audience. My title may
have changed over the last 53 years, but
I’m still just trying to make sure we’re
ready for the next audience.
DENNY REAGAN
Your generous gift will forever be used to support all
areas of The Muny’s operation. Help Denny ensure
the world’s oldest and largest outdoor theatre is
ready for generations of audiences to come!

The theatre is known for transporting you to new places. At Enterprise, we have
a real appreciation for that. The arts make our community stronger and more
interesting. And The Muny is just one reason we’re proud to call St. Louis home.
Big fan and hometown supporter of The Muny.
