2020 will forever be remembered as the year of COVID-19—
which also meant, for the first time in 102 years, The Muny
would not be able to host audiences in-person.

As virus conversations grew louder, what began as Could we
just a contingency plan in March quickly became the produce something
critically acclaimed, first-of-its-kind, virtual Muny
season. This free, 10-week season premiered June brand new, give
15 and was presented in two five-week installments: talent and creatives
Muny Magic in Your Home and The Muny Summer the opportunity to
2020 Variety Hour Live! Each episode premiered on work and truly make
Monday with re-stream on Thursday (complete with
a captioned and audio described version as well). some magic?

Artistic Director and Executive
Producer Mike Isaacson posed
a bold question:

Could we produce
something brand new,
give talent and creatives
the opportunity to work and
truly make some magic?

Production for that “what if”
began just three weeks prior to
the first Muny 2020 Summer
Variety Hour Live! on July 20.
In addition to archived clips
from past Muny favorites, this
massive effort included behind-
the-scenes stories, cast reunion
sing-alongs, new performances
by Muny artists from around
the country, created-from-
home numbers from the Muny
Kids and Teens and Munywood
Squares—a Muny-themed
gameshow featuring past
Muny stars.

By the time the virtual booms
closed, more than 200,000
viewers from 22 countries
experienced this historic season.
None of which would have been
possible without incredible show
sponsors and wildly generous
