3 Mike Isaacson Artistic Director & Executive Producer MIKE’S NOTES Welcome! We are thrilled so many new theatergoers (young and old) are here tonight to “be our guest” for The Muny’s fourth production of Disney’s fairy-tale marvel, Beauty and the Beast. It is mindboggling to think that when Belle, the Beast, Gaston, Mrs. Potts, and the whole magical household crew last graced our Muny stage, many in tonight’s audience weren’t yet born – or were still in diapers. A lot can happen in eight years! In the case of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, a lot can happen in 30 years. In 1991, Disney followed up its hugely successful animated film, 1989’s The Little Mermaid, with Beauty, and it instantly became a worldwide sensation. It was the first animated feature to earn an Academy Award nomination for “Best Picture,” and three of the film’s songs were nominated for “Best Original Song,” with the win going to the classic title song. When it was released on video, and could be watched and re-watched at home, it became a touchstone film for at least two generations. Disney also understood that the film’s music and lyrics, by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and script by Linda Woolverton were the beginnings of a great Broadway musical. In 1994, Beauty and the Beast opened as a musical at New York’s famed Palace Theatre and ran for 13 years. Countless national tours and international productions followed. The Muny’s first production was in 2005, and it held an attendance record for nearly five years. Beauty has since become a high school musical staple, and the “junior” edition is produced annually by thousands of grade schools. A live-action version starring Emma Watson was released in 2017, and ABC broadcast a television special commemorating the 30th film anniversary last year. Another historical connection of import: In 2006, this evening’s director, John Tartaglia – fresh from his Tony nomination for Avenue Q – joined the Broadway company of Beauty and the Beast as Lumiere. On our first day of rehearsal, John told our company that Beauty “is my favorite Broadway show to be in – ever. The show’s themes of family, acceptance, and love still touch me.” John has been a beloved member of our Muny family since 2012, when he stormed the stage as The Genie in Disney’s Aladdin, and since then he has starred in and directed many enchanting shows. With tonight’s choreographer Patrick O’Neill, John created last season’s Mary Poppins, taking the Muny stage and audience to new levels of wonder. These two formidable talents are joined by music director Ben Whiteley, who has music directed all four Muny productions of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. So where does all this take us? Someplace simple and sweet. Every once in a while, “a tale as old as time” enters our hearts. Then, it enters our collective soul, and suddenly, it is a permanent part of our lives. Think of Dorothy and friends on the yellow brick road. Maria and Tony on a fire escape. Esther and Tootie looking out the snow covered windowsill. These stories, these characters, help stitch our lives together. Tonight, I defy you not to get a bit teary-eyed as Belle and the Beast waltz to the title song. It is an eternal moment, made even more resonant by tonight’s marvelous Ashley Blanchet and Ben Crawford. And if you happen to be sitting with someone who is experiencing this moment for the first time, enjoy. Glimpses of wonder are everything.

For 103 years, Ameren and The Muny have partnered to power the lives and livelihoods of creatives and our communities. This year we bring you a family favorite, Beauty and the Beast. Like Belle with her beloved books, we hope this show takes you to places that only a story can. And to encourage young readers to reach for the stars, we hope you will consider a book donation to the official community partner of this evening’s performance, Ready Readers. “There is no friend as loyal as a book.” — Ernest Hemingway Bright tomorrows start with doing good today. 1901 Chouteau Avenue PO Box 66149 St. Louis, MO 63166-6149 Ameren.com Summer 2023 For 103 years Ameren has supported The Muny, helping to create magical memories for generations. As the presenting sponsor of this year’s production of Beauty and the Beast, we hope you enjoy your evening in this historic theater under the stars in Forest Park. Ameren’s philanthropic programs fund nonprofits throughout our service territory in both Illinois and Missouri that are dedicated to improving the lives of our customers and communities. This includes support for cultural treasures including The Muny, which enhances the quality of life for people of all ages. Beauty and the Beast is a family favorite featuring lead character Belle, an avid reader. Sharing books with children of a very young age supports emerging literacy and increases a love for reading and learning. That’s why, for the first time ever, Ameren and The Muny are coming together to encourage all patrons to support Ready Readers, a nonprofit that believes every child deserves the gift of literacy. A book donation to Ready Readers offers children in under-resourced communities an opportunity to dream big and, through listening and learning to read, to explore new perspectives just like Belle. This evening, as the curtain rises and the lights Ameren powers illuminate the stage, I hope you will take a moment to celebrate storytelling and the arts, including all the talent and dedication that goes in to creating this wonderful production. On behalf of the Ameren team, thank you for joining us this evening and enjoy the show. Best regards, Marty Lyons Chairman, President and CEO Ameren Corporation FROM OUR SPONSOR 7

HOWARD ASHMAN (Lyrics) Best known as a pivotal creative mind behind the renaissance of Disney animation and his work on The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast (which is dedicated to, “Our friend, Howard Ashman, who gave a Mermaid her voice and a Beast his soul...”) Ashman’s first love was theatre. Ashman was a founder of off-off Broadway’s renowned WPA Theater, where he conceived, wrote and directed God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, as well as the classic musical, Little Shop of Horrors (both music by Alan Menken). In 1986, he wrote and directed the Broadway musical Smile (music by Marvin Hamlisch). Lamented as a lost treasure of the 1980’s theater scene, Smile remains popular on High School and College campuses throughout the country. Howard Ashman died in 1991 from complications of AIDS. Rather than pursue Tim’s ambitions to write rock or pop songs, they turned their attention to Andrew’s obsession - musical theatre. Their first collaboration, The Likes of Us (lyrics by Tim, music by Andrew), was an unsuccessful show based on the life of Dr. Barnardo, the Victorian philanthropist. Their next three works together were much more successful: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. Tim has also worked with
