2021 Muny Season

Dear Muny Patron,

The Muny has long represented the best of St. Louis – a wonderful outdoor
setting within the city’s treasured Forest Park where people can come
together to enjoy an evening of creativity, artistry and musical talent. And
now, after a year’s absence, its return onstage symbolizes hope for the future
as we begin again to share experiences, like The Muny’s productions, together.

At Emerson, a global industrial technology company, we share many of these
same values. We feel an immense responsibility to create a better world –
one that prizes and protects our valuable resources, celebrates and empowers
our diverse backgrounds and experiences, and offers thoughtful solutions that
improve people’s lives. This commitment extends to the communities where
we operate, too, most especially here in our hometown of St. Louis.

We at Emerson are proud to be able to support The Municipal Theatre
Association of St. Louis and other local nonprofit organizations serving the
St. Louis region. Our partnerships within the communities where we operate
and with our customers around the world represent our commitment each
day to living our company’s Purpose: We drive innovation that makes the
world healthier, safer, smarter and more sustainable.

On behalf of Emerson, I want to thank you for your patronage of The Muny.
And enjoy the show!

Sincerely,

Lal Karsanbhai

MIKE’S NOTES 11

As I begin my tenth season as artistic director and executive producer, I offer you the most
understated sentence I’ve ever written:

I’m so happy you’re here for the first production of The Muny’s 103rd season.

That you are now sitting in your seat and reading this is a testament to the commitment, fortitude
and tireless work of hundreds of people you won’t see on our stage tonight. Their efforts surround
us all. And they must be honored first.

I am well aware of the generations of hard-working people who preceded all of us at The Muny, but
from what I know of our history, no one ever had to face what we’ve endured for the past 22 months,
after we closed Matilda on August 11, 2019 (with a rain-out, no less!).

In 102 years, no Muny season had ever been postponed. While our online concert series and variety
show was greeted with joy and acclaim (more than 400,000 viewers around the world!) and it
gave us a beautiful compilation of all that is magical about The Muny, we ached to be back here
surrounded by trees, under starlit skies, with you. Virtual technology can only go so far, and not
being together last summer hurt.

So, like everyone else, we stumbled forward, knowing where we wanted to end up. The unanticipated,
unprecedented challenges of putting together this season multiplied as we went. After that weird,
painful hiatus, the complexities of returning to live performance, safely and with our usual high
standards, compounded by the day. But throughout, we had a single, unshakable goal:

To return to you, live, the very first moment we could.

Writing those words now, it seems a simple goal. But as we’ve all learned, sometimes the most
obvious, honest, natural goal can be the toughest to achieve.

So we came up with the plans, the revised plans, the semi-secret plans behind the plan, the newly
revised variations on the plan we thought we had ditched but thankfully someone saved the file...
And because of you, we just kept going. Banging our heads against newly constructed walls, but
not giving up, not once. We said it aloud, over and over: The Muny must be back, live, the first
moment possible.

So to everyone who made this night happen – the board, the construction teams, the Muny staff,
our COVID compliance teams, our actors, our musicians, our scenic artists, our crew, all our union
and guild partners, our designers, our sound team, our lighting teams, our video teams, our
medical advisors, the City of St. Louis, our donors, our Washington University Medical Advisors, our
ushers, our food service teams, our cleaning teams, our grounds crew, and our patient audience, as
eager for this return as we were – thank you. You did it. You kept the faith, and now we’re here.

One of our beloved colleagues, director Marcia Milgrom Dodge, came back with us, eager to
conceive a production of Smokey Joe’s Cafe set in St. Louis’ historic
Gaslight Square neighborhood. This revue of the legendary Leiber and
Stoller catalogue celebrates exactly what we need right now: our neighbors,
rock and roll music — one of America’s glorious gifts to the world — and
the pure joy of watching great performers and musicians do their thing.

I’m so happy you’re here for our first production of
The Muny’s 103rd season.

PRESIDENT & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Dennis M. Reagan

36 A M E S S A G E F R O M D E N N Y

Welcome back! After nearly two years since we last had a
show, shared memories, or simply met in this theatre, I have
never been more grateful for the opportunity to simply say,
Welcome Back. It is GREAT to see you!

While this season is the first for many things – new offices,
stage trees, and architectural shells flanking the stage – it’s
also a last for me.

As many of you know, I’ll be retiring later this year after

53 years at The Muny. Several months ago, we didn’t know

Denny Reagan if there would be a traditional 103rd season. I am just so
President & CEO thankful that I get to close out my career as President and
CEO enjoying what has been, without a doubt, the greatest

part of my job – standing in my “spot” on the right side of

the theatre, greeting you as you arrive, and watching this theatre fill with friends, love,

memories, and tradition each night.

I’ve had the great fortune of watching family legacies continue in this theatre, summer
after summer, as generations come and go. This job (hardly a fitting word) has gifted
me with lifelong friends, blessed my family, and allowed me to experience so many
meaningful moments.

Throughout my career, I have been so proud to hear quite often, that our theatre is a
place that so many St. Louisans have a true connection to. Maybe they worked here as
a teenage usher or had a family member who performed on the stage. Maybe The Muny
was where a couple had their first date, or wedding photos taken under the box office
chandelier. I have been fortunate to work for an organization that has played a part in
so many people’s lives.

I’ve been asked recently what I will remember the most after my career. I will cherish the
many stories you’ve shared with me, and feeling the connection to those stories because
in many ways they are my own. I started at The Muny as a 16-year-old high-schooler,
and finish a proud father of three, blessed with seven grandchildren, a heart full of
thanks, and friends in each of you. Will I miss standing here and saying hello each
night? Sure, but I am excited to continue my “Muny Career” in those seats next to you.

Now, let’s settle in and enjoy the magic that’s happening on stage this summer. And if
you want to say hi, or share a story, you know where to find me.

In advance of President and CEO Denny Reagan’s
December retirement, and to honor his incredible
legacy, we are proud to announce the:

Denny Reagan

Endowed Fund

Denny has been known to say his current role isn’t
too much different than his first role cleaning up
the theatre every morning after a show.

As a picker, I made sure the theatre
was ready for the next audience.
My title may have changed over
the last 53 years, but I’m still just
trying to make sure we’re ready for
the next audience.

DENNY REAGAN

Your generous gift will forever be used to support all
areas of The Muny’s operation.
Help Denny ensure the world’s oldest and largest
outdoor theatre is ready for generations of
audiences to come!
Contact Courtney Simms with questions or to make
your gift today. [email protected] or 314.595.5727

All gifts made to the Denny Reagan Endowed Fund in
2021 will also be celebrated as part of The Muny’s
Second Century Capital Campaign.
