MIKE’S NOTES 11
We’ve arrived, and we’re right here in Forest Park for the inevitable closing production of
Muny 100: Meet Me In St. Louis.
In 1941, Sally Benson wrote a series of short stories for The New Yorker inspired by early childhood
memories of St. Louis. The series was called “5135 Kensington” and became so popular that
Benson wrote four more stories and published them in a book titled Meet Me In St. Louis, which she
already knew was the name of an upcoming MGM musical film adaptation.
Directed by Vincente Minnelli and starring Judy Garland, the film was Hollywood’s response to
Broadway’s Oklahoma!, which had dared to celebrate pastoral America and its straightforward,
down-to-earth residents. Hugely popular during World War II, Meet Me overwhelmed the public with
its heartrending story of home, family and many of life’s modest but poetic joys. The film was so
truthful in capturing American life, the U.S. military had to stop showing it to the troops overseas
because they’d break down sobbing.
It was inevitable that Meet Me would be adapted to the stage, and The Muny–in its hometown–
helped make that happen, producing its world premiere in 1960. Since then, the show has gone
through many editions and versions, including a highly-disappointing 1989 Broadway version,
followed by a lumbering national tour that became the “official” version licensed and produced
around the world.
Until tonight.
Because Muny 100 is equally about our past and our future, I welcome you to the world premiere
of a new version of Meet Me In St. Louis, featuring additional script material by Gordon Greenberg,
fresh orchestrations by St. Louisan John McDaniel, and the inspired vision of our director Marcia
Milgrom Dodge, our choreographer Josh Walden, and our music director Charlie Alterman.
To create this production, we lived for years with the Smith family of Kensington Avenue, trying to
excavate and re-discover the essential elements and ideas that have made their story beloved all
over the world. We answered many questions (“Where was she going on that trolley?”) and we even
included a song cut from the film, a Rodgers & Hammerstein treat “Boys and Girls Like You and
Me.” Tonight, something old is new again.
My deepest wish is that you will receive our new Meet Me as the magical candles (the ones you
can’t blow out) atop the many-tiered cake that has been Muny 100. For me, this has been not just
a historic and epic season, but a heart-stopping one. I hope many of its
stories, songs, scenes and performances have delighted and amazed
and moved you. Above all, I hope you’ve seen that backstage, onstage,
and in the audience, we are, indeed, “alone in our greatness.”
Right here in St. Louis.
See you in our second century.
