MIKE’S NOTES 11

Welcome to another Muny premiere—of sorts.

By 1957, television’s infiltration of American life and culture was seen as the potential destroyer of
Hollywood and Broadway (and, yes, The Muny). Many of the era’s leading creative talents—actors,
writers, directors—were quietly advised against working in this crude new medium.

So it was quite a shocker when Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II—the supremely popular
and highly regarded writers of Oklahoma!, The King and I, Carousel—announced that they were
writing an original musical for television. Rodgers and Hammerstein considered the musical a
truly populist form, one that should tell a specific story that could be enjoyed by as many people as
possible. If Americans were enjoying television, why not give it a go?

Starring a then unknown Julie Andrews, CBS television broadcast “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s
Cinderella” live on March 31, 1957, and an astonishing 107 million people tuned in. This was
epic. The total U.S. population was 172 million, which means 60 percent of the country watched
Cinderella—double the percentage who watched the 2019 Superbowl. And for more perspective: In
32 years on Broadway, the legendary Phantom of the Opera has played to “only” 18.5 million.

There were two remakes of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella in the late 1960s, and a 1997
version starred Whitney Houston and Brandy. But inevitably, the musical made for television ended
up on stage. It’s been produced all over the world, and it’s graced the Muny stage six times: the
first in 1960, and the most mythical, Cinderella on Ice, thirty years later. Each production used the
beloved original television songs but also interpolated its own mix of Rodgers & Hammerstein trunk
songs and rarities. (One show even featured the lovely “Boys and Girls Like You and Me,” which you
heard in last season’s Meet Me in St. Louis.) In 2013, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella finally
made its Broadway debut, with a new book by playwright Douglas Carter Beane. And tonight marks
the Muny premiere of this new, now definitive stage Cinderella.

Beane’s fresh, wry take fine-tunes the story in a way that honors its classic past, yet converges with
contemporary family entertainment. Both heroine and hero are searching. The world that Ella faces
is far more complex and confounding than it was in 1957. With wisdom, dry wit, and fresh joy, the
show explores our eternal human need to be found and rescued.

Returning director Marcia Milgrom Dodge (Meet Me in St. Louis, The Little Mermaid, Buddy Holly...)
has magicked us into so many different worlds, she’s practically The Muny’s fairy godmother. She’s
joined by a frequent collaborator, the exuberant choreographer Josh Walden, and they worked hand-
in-hand with music director Greg Anthony Rassen, who conducted Cinderella on Broadway. Robin
McGee (costumes), Rob Denton (lighting), Paige Hathaway (sets), Nathan Scheuer (video), David
Patridge (sound), Kaitlyn Adams (wigs) and Eric Wright (puppets) have been Marcia’s magician-
assistants, executing her vision with the sort of selfless delight we see in
Ella’s woodland friends.

And so, 52 years after Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella first
enchanted the nation, I welcome you to its latest Muny premiere. The old
has been made new again on our beautiful new stage where “Impossible
things are happening every day.”

FROM OUR SPONSOR 13

Welcome to Forest Park and The Muny’s production of
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. This nine-time Tony
Award-winning musical is a reminder that dreams really can
come true. The crowd-favorite song, “It’s Possible,” especially
resonates with me, because at Edward Jones, we exist to make
a difference in the lives our clients — to help make what matters
most to them possible.

We know our clients’ financial goals are part of their larger
life goals and we support causes that are meaningful to our
clients to help strengthen the communities we call home. The
Muny has been a St. Louis treasure for more than 100 years.
For generations of theatergoers, summertime in St. Louis is
synonymous with a night at The Muny. Likewise, caring about
our clients, one another and our communities isn’t something
we do at Edward Jones; it’s who we are.

We are a strong supporter of the arts in our region and proud
to sponsor tonight’s production.

Enjoy the show!
