MIKE’S NOTES 11

In 1898 (yes, we’re starting there), the city that’s now Elmore, Oklahoma, banned dancing of any sort.
Lasting nearly 100 years and enacted before Oklahoma was a state, the ban was as a pre-emptive strike
against an assumed level of vice and revelry that was heading Elmore’s way (presumably via Missouri).

In 1981, the students of Elmore High School wanted a prom, so they launched a campaign to overturn the
ban. One of their most quotable opponents was the Rev. F.R. Johnson in the nearby town of Hennepin: “No
good has ever come from a dance.” Elmore’s school board split 2-2, and the tie was broken by the board
president, a local rancher who famously said, “Let ‘em dance.”

This fascinating story made national headlines, inspiring the writer of the film musical Fame, Dean
Pitchford, to investigate. Pitchford traveled to Elmore, interviewed those involved, and ultimately created
Footloose. Released in 1984, the movie was a surprise, scrappy smash hit, and its scorching pop
soundtrack dominated worldwide radio and record sales for months. Since then, Footloose has ascended
into pop culture’s pantheon, serving not only as an iconic ’80s marker but as a preserved American elixir
whose ingredients are eternal: youth, freedom and music.

It was inevitable that Footloose would find its way to the stage. Pitchford took the reins, creating a stage
version that braided in new musical theater songs with the original pop hits. As he reinvented the story
for the stage, Pitchford went deeper, exploring the complex forces beneath the conflict and bringing in
themes of social class, personal loss, and dislocation.

It’s easy to dismiss the intense popularity of Footloose as a quirk of pop culture. But the continued
affection for this show—Footloose ranked number one on our most recent Muny survey—speaks to
something far more universal. When you look beneath the dancing, the hormones, and the earworm
melodies, Footloose is a potent tale of coming of age and coping with loss. As our director told the cast at
the beginning of rehearsals, “The show is about a father seeking a son and a son seeking a father.”

That director, by the way, is Christian Borle, who’s been in 11 Broadway shows (winning two Tony awards)
and tonight makes his musical theater directing debut at The Muny. Christian played Willard in the
national tour and Broadway production of Footloose, so he brings a rich history to the show. He and his
electric collaborators—Jess Hartman, choreography; Andrew Graham, music direction; Leon Dobkowski,
costumes; Tim Mackabee, sets; Rob Denton, lights; Greg Emetaz, video —have created a look that is
clearly the ’80s, but feels true in 2019.

Footloose requires powerful youth onstage, so tonight you’ll see some fantastic up-and-coming musical
theatre college students, as well as our brilliant Muny teens joined by our annual Muny Intensive teens
(10 ferociously talented high schoolers from around the U.S.). Read their
names carefully, because you’ll hearing a lot from them. Another delicious
casting note: The part of Rev. Shaw is played by Jeremy Kushnier, who created
the role of Ren in the original Broadway production.

That’s all the background you need. Let ’em dance!
