MIKE’S NOTES 3
Welcome to the start of our exhilarating seven-show 2022 Muny season—the first full season since 2019—and
tonight’s historic Muny revival of Chicago.
You read that right: “revival.” Our final production of last season’s five-show, six-weeks-postponed, emerging-
from-a worldwide-pandemic season was Kander and Ebb’s Broadway sensation Chicago. On opening night, we
couldn’t believe our good fortune (well, good fortune sitting upon months of insanely hard work and perseverance).
We had made it. Show five was on the stage, and the triumph was radiating throughout 10,000 seats. We had
pulled off what seemed impossible. We were the first theatre in the world to reopen for a full season.
Then there was the show itself. From the opening notes of “All That Jazz,” a wild electricity arced from the stage
into the audience, and all night the musical theatre wattage just kept getting brighter and bolder. Director/
Choreographer Denis Jones and his colleagues had created an electric, surprising, sexy, heartfelt production
that played our glorious new stage like a Stradivarius, resulting in a (pun intended) killer night at The Muny. The
screams and hosannas at the curtain were balm after the many intense months, and more than a few tears were
shed onstage and backstage. (We were further honored this spring, when Chicago swept the St. Louis Theater
Critics Circle with seven awards, including “Best Musical.” It was the biggest win ever for a Muny production.)
On Tuesday, we learned we had our first cast COVID case of the season, and we began testing more than 200
people a day. That night, the amazing Kamal Lado went on as an understudy—our first in a decade—in a thrilling
performance that ended early due to rain. Excitement continued to spread throughout St. Louis, and on Wednesday
night, a full house lost its collective mind. On Thursday, we learned of a second case, and that the brilliant Gabi
Stapula was our second understudy on that night. A packed crowd screamed their faces off at the entrance of
Velma Kelly, and all was right again.
Friday morning, more cases. We knew we had to stop the show and cancel the last three performances. As we were
frantically contacting thousands of patrons and hundreds of backstage and house staff (all the while dealing with
an overwhelming sense of shock and loss), I snuck into my office, called the rightsholders of Chicago, explained
the situation, and asked if we could please open our 2022 season with this extraordinary production. Oh, and
could I know in an hour? These conversations usually take months, reams of paper, and long chains of email. But
90 minutes later, as the weary cast arrived to gather their things from their dressing rooms, I was able to whisper
to them, “It’s not over. This journey will continue.”
Given the demands for our wildly talented principal cast, the odds of getting them all back in exactly ten months
were…lousy. Yet tonight, after months of nail-biting and torturous schedule changes, the miracle has happened.
I am writing this during rehearsals, and the principals are all here. Some members of the ensemble returned last
fall to long running Broadway and touring shows, but several were able to come back, and everyone is joined by
exciting new talents.
I still can’t quite believe it, but here we are. We are thrilled to share this
production with the thousands who missed it, and if you’re returning, I am
confident you’ll find fresh joy. As I watch the exuberance and smooth confidence
of this rehearsal, I realize this is more than a revival.
It’s a renaissance.

FROM OUR SPONSOR 7
Welcome back to Forest Park and The Muny’s production of Chicago.
Last year’s abbreviated season provided a welcome return of this historic
St. Louis treasure, and this year, I’m excited for the return of a full summer
of wonderful shows at The Muny.
Chicago had a brief but memorable run before the early close of the 2021
season, so it only made sense to bring it back as the 2022 season opener.
Hailed as “Musical theater magic,” “Downright breathtaking” and “Nothing
short of brilliant!” during its 2021 run, Chicago was the talk of the town!
This internationally acclaimed, Tony Award-winning musical from Kander
and Ebb is a wickedly fun romp about fame, fortune and justice. Follow the
escapades of merry murderesses Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly as they set
out to prove fame is the best way to get away with … well, sit back, relax,
and find out!
At Edward Jones, we are longstanding supporters of the arts, and we are
thrilled to sponsor The Muny again this year. Edward Jones has been helping
clients and their families reach their goals since our founding in St. Louis 100
years ago. Our purpose is to improve the lives of our clients and colleagues,
and together, better our communities and society. Much like our firm, The
Muny is woven into the fabric of our region. We are excited and grateful to
play our part in bringing tonight’s production back to St. Louis.
Thank you for your support of The Muny. We’re very glad you’re here.
Enjoy the show!
