MIKE’S NOTES 11

Welcome to The Muny premiere of Jersey Boys! Welcome to the United States regional premiere of
Jersey Boys! Welcome to the world-wide licensing premiere of Jersey Boys!

So how did this happen? I’m regularly asked, “When will The Muny ‘get’ Wicked?” Phantom? Lion King?
Hamilton? The answer is, “I don’t exactly know, but, honestly? Probably not in my lifetime.”

Broadway musicals have a life cycle. If they are fortunate enough to open on Broadway and then lucky
enough to run, they spawn national tours, international productions and, in the case of the monster
hits, “sit-down” productions in Chicago or London. (It was just announced that the recent Tony Award–
winning play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child would have a sit-down in San Francisco, a rare event
for a play. Hamilton is now in its second year in Chicago.) The life cycle can span decades, and in
the current golden age of musicals, shows are running longer and longer and longer. Phantom of the
Opera opened on Broadway in 1988, is still running there, and has been touring ever since.

The Muny can create its productions once they are actually available to us to create, and generally this
is only after the Broadway production and all its national tours have concluded their runs. Oklahoma!
opened on Broadway in 1943; the first Muny production was in 1954. Even now, in the case of shows
as classically popular as Oklahoma!, if they’re revived on Broadway or sent out on a national tour,
they’re removed from licensing for a period of time, so they become unavailable for theatres around
the country.

Which leads us to tonight. About two years ago, anticipating our epic 100th season and hearing a
rumor that Jersey Boys was about to announce an end to its phenomenal 11-year Broadway run, I
called Michael David, head of the Broadway producing team known as “The Dodgers.” I told him I
had a crazy dream that The Muny would make some more history in its 100th year and become the
first theatre in the world to produce Jersey Boys. I loved the show, its music, and its bold tale of some
working-class boys who changed the world. After hearing out my pitch, Michael replied, “Well, you
know, I’m a crazy dreamer too…” He went on to say that he wasn’t sure it could happen, because
the show was still touring and, while it wasn’t public yet, there were plans afoot to move the show
off-Broadway (which happened). But then he said the truly magic words: “But you know how much I
love The Muny, so let’s try!”

Tonight, you’re sitting in the first theatre in the world to stage a new production of Jersey Boys. While
the music, lyrics and script are faithful to the original, the sets, costumes, direction, choreography,
lighting and sound are all new, and all ours. Every actor, artist and
artisan who created this production did it with a sense of honor, thrilled
to be a part of this piece of Muny and musical theatre history. Their
work is passionate and bold and beautiful.

Oh, what a night!

MUNY YOUNG FRIENDS 47

As The Muny celebrates its 100th season under the stars, we are pleased to share an exciting new part of our
organization dedicated to welcoming young professionals to the magic of outdoor musical theatre in St. Louis. In
partnership with Muny leaders, the Muny Young Friends cultivate passion and awareness for The Muny through
unique networking opportunities, exclusive access to Muny events, fantastic benefits and relevant volunteer
opportunities. We express our thanks to Anheuser-Busch and the A-B Biergarten for their support of this program.

If you’re 22-39, join the
Muny Young Friends and
help support The Muny through
exciting and unique opportunities
here and throughout the

St. Louis community.
