MIKE’S NOTES 3
“At last my arm is complete!” exclaims Sweeney Todd as he thrusts his familial blades skyward, triumphant
at the return of his long-lost “friends.” We share that sense of completion tonight, as we bring you, at last,
this twice-delayed Muny premiere of Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece, Sweeney Todd.
When it opened on Broadway in 1979, Sweeney was instantly recognized as a groundbreaking, breathtaking,
wholly original musical, one that fell neatly into the tradition of West Side Story, A Chorus Line, and Show
Boat. And yet, there was nothing traditional about it. Sweeney Todd was so new and fresh, the audience
wasn’t quite sure what it was seeing. They only knew it enthralled them.
Since then, Sweeney has only grown in popularity; you will find it in every Top Ten list of Broadway’s
greatest musicals. There have been two Broadway revivals, numerous international and Opera House
productions (80 percent of the show is sung), a film starring Johnny Depp, and even an off-Broadway
edition that took place in an actual pie shop.
The book is by Hugh Wheeler, but the music and lyrics are all Stephen Sondheim’s, and Sweeney is
consistently cited as his most popular musical. Last November, Mr. Soundheim passed away, and the
public outpouring of grief and praise was intense. The world had lost a writer whose contributions to the
American musical ranked with those of Jerome Kern, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, and Jerry
Herman. Yet in many ways, Sondheim had surpassed these titans. He wrote musicals for characters, and
he built them from stories that on the surface seemed to defy musicalization. Company is a wry series of
scenes and songs about contemporary marriage. Sunday in the Park with George explores the journey of the
painter Georges Seurat. A Little Night Music transforms an Ingmar Bergman film. Again and again, Sondheim
delivered unexpected, deeply human, and thoroughly original musicals.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is an especially unusual musical in that it is also a
thriller—an entertainment category common in film and television but rare on stage. (Other attempts
include Carrie: The Musical and American Psycho.) The idea came to Sondheim when he saw a 1973 London
production in which playwright Christopher Bond went beyond melodrama to find the source for Todd’s
crazed pain: a cruel injustice. By centering his descent into madness in the theft of his wife and daughter,
Bond allowed the audience an insight into soul-crushing loss. And in their musical, Sondheim and Wheeler
raised that insight to new dramatic heights.
They also added doses of delicious wit and comedy with the extraordinary Mrs. Lovett, part Lady MacBeth
and part Lucille Ball. But the real transformation came with Sondheim’s glorious music, played for you
tonight by our superb, 27-piece Muny orchestra. Considered one of the
greatest scores in Broadway history, it tosses out one amazing melody after
another, each of them delicious and unforgettable. Even after knowing
this music for 43 years, I still find new astonishments when I listen to our
extraordinary company rehearse.
So get ready to laugh, gasp, and have your heart broken. Mr. Todd has set
up shop.
