MIKE’S NOTES 11

Welcome to an extraordinary, St. Louis premiere of Kinky Boots. The Muny is the first theatre in
the U.S. to produce this joyous, moving and vibrant show after its triumphant, six-year, 1400+
performance run on Broadway (winning multiple Tony awards) and glorious stagings in London,
Japan, South Korea, Canada, Germany, Australia, Poland, Finland….

Kinky Boots is based on a 2005 film (itself inspired by a documentary) about a family business
struggling to survive. Illuminating, funny, and ultimately powerful choices are made in order
to keep the factory open and the community united. When the musical opened in April 2013, it
was as if a joy comet had landed on Broadway. The impact was immediate, the euphoria real. A
wise, insightful script by Harvey Fierstein had fused with a deliciously eclectic score and lyrics
by the legendary Cyndi Lauper in dozens of surprising and satisfying ways.

It was all brought together through the masterful direction and choreography of Jerry Mitchell,
whose original Broadway work is re-created and adapted for our production tonight. And here’s
where the story gets local and personal. Mitchell was a Webster University student who got
his Equity card at The Muny and went on to a historic career on Broadway. First, he danced
for—and apprenticed with—such legends as Michael Bennett, Jerome Robbins, and Bob
Fosse. Then Jerry found his own voice, and it led him to choreograph Hairspray, La Cage Aux
Folles, and The Full Monty. From there, he’s been directing and choreographing a long line of
hits, including Legally Blonde, On Your Feet! and tonight’s Kinky Boots. (Boots on the table:
I produced his first Broadway choreographing gig, and his first Broadway directing gig. This
Fall we’re working on a new Broadway bound musical Becoming Nancy.)

There is a tradition, style, and sensibility to a Jerry Mitchell musical that, while reflecting
Bennett and Robbins, is distinctly his own—and manifestly American. He connects characters,
costumes, music, lights, story, and sets in an intoxicating whirl that’s more than just theatrics.
A Jerry Mitchell musical breaks down its audience’s defenses. It seduces us into participating
in the show’s power, feeling the tingle of authentic human connection. With glee and bravado,
he shows us what we can do together. At a Jerry Mitchell show, Everybody does Say Yeah.

Continuing the personal: Our director, DB Bonds, was last on our stage eight years ago, as
“Emmett” in Legally Blonde, and I had the joy of working with him on that show’s national
tour. Our choreographer, Rusty Mowery, also worked on the touring show, as well as the Muny
productions of Hairspray and Legally Blonde. Our beloved Taylor Louderman returns on a quick
break from her Tony-nominated role of Regina in the smash Broadway hit Mean Girls. Finally,
I must acknowledge my Broadway colleague and friend Hal Luftig, one of the original lead
producers of Kinky Boots. Hal came for Muny 100, saw our productions
of The Wiz and Singin’ in the Rain, and was deeply moved by his
Muny experience. After that, he so wanted The Muny to be the first to
produce his beloved show.

So here we are. Everybody Say Yeah!
