MIKE’S NOTES 3

We close our epic 2022 season with Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, a show that remains
beloved more than half a century after its humble beginnings as an LP for school kids. Before they wrote Jesus
Christ Superstar, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice tapped into a simple, childlike purity in their music and
storytelling, and I have a feeling that in another half century, Joseph might turn out to be their most enduring
musical. Every day, it is performed hundreds of times around the world. (This is our sixth Muny production;
our last was a decade ago.)

I hope you were here last week for The Color Purple. It was a powerful reminder of the need for strength in the
face of adversity, and that is the perfect segue to Joseph, because trusting a dream is exactly what can pull
us through.

The staff, cast members, and crews at the Muny know their craft, but even more important, they know how
to hang on to a dream. This was a challenging summer: We returned to a full seven-show season, got flooded
twice, dried ourselves off and fixed the damage, sweated through record temperatures, and kept up COVID
precautions. There was a blur of constantly changing professional schedules and material shortages, not
to mention the usual scattering of weird, unusual, or unprecedented human and natural events. It’s been…
something.

But nobody ever gave up. Backstage and onstage, people just kept renewing their efforts, bending,
collaborating, experimenting, and pulling off greatness. After the flooding, the directors and choreographers
of the three remaining shows had to reimagine scenes and dances, which meant the lighting, sound, scenic,
wardrobe, and video teams had to keep up, adapting their own work. Stage management teams had to rapidly
change schedules, and for a few days, we had only two large rehearsal spaces for three huge shows, so the
stage crews would have to whisk one set of props away and get a new one in place at speed.

All of this happened without complaint, and there were daily examples of the Muny ethic: every single person
making sure that each one of their colleagues had what they needed to succeed. Instead of people focusing
on their own comfort, convenience, or ego, I saw an unquestioned commitment to having a show for you.

In my biography for this program, I list colleagues who seldom receive public recognition but fully deserve it.
When you read this list – and see all the other names listed throughout this program – you will get a sense of
just how many people give of themselves every summer to make sure The Muny is magical.

Onstage tonight: a glorious production, with our treasure Jason Gotay (MUNY Cinderella, Mamma Mia! and
more) in the role of Joseph and the thrillingly talented Jessica Vosk as our narrator. This musical has had
a true dream team, led with love by our director/choreographer Josh Rhodes, associate choreographer Lee
Wilkins, and music director Charlie Alterman. Mykal Kilgore, who took the town
last summer in Smokey Joe’s Cafe, returns as the pharaoh. And making his
Muny debut is the multitalented Eric Jordan Young as Jacob/Potiphar.

Oh, and if you look closely, you’ll see 53 of our Muny kids and teens beginning
their careers before your very eyes. Soak up some of their energy before you go,
and until we meet back here next summer, remember: Any dream will do.
