3 Mike Isaacson Artistic Director & Executive Producer MIKE’S NOTES “This show [West Side Story] is my baby… If it goes as well in New York as it has on the road we will have proved something very big indeed and maybe changed the face of American Musical Theater.” — Leonard Bernstein in a 1957 letter to composer David Diamond. Welcome to The Muny’s ninth production of West Side Story. This night makes history. Our last West Side Story graced the stage exactly a decade ago, in 2013, and tonight is also the sixtieth anniversary of the show’s first Muny production, in 1963. At this moment, there are renewed questions about which books, movies, plays and musicals constitute “classics.” While I usually leave those conversations to the academics, I maintain that West Side Story is an American classic. It has an essential beauty, power, and relevance that make it one of the few musicals I expect to transcend time’s ravages. West Side Story is a musical that people will always want to see. The score is glorious. The dances are captivating. The teenage characters are misguided, passionate, and lost; the adults jaded, leery, and lost. In each return to West Side Story, audiences find new insight into our shared humanity. The show’s original inspiration came from playwright Arthur Laurents, who had seen a 1955 newspaper headline about a Chicano teen gang war in Los Angeles. Laurents, composer Leonard Bernstein, and lyricist Stephen Sondheim were already working on a musical based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet: it involved an Irish Catholic boy falling for a Jewish girl. But in that newspaper story, Laurents saw a chance to create a show that was bolder, richer, and far timelier than their first draft. Forget Irish Catholic versus Jewish—why not rival gangs of newly immigrated Puerto Ricans and other immigrants, living in tension in the same neighborhood? Director/Choreographer Jerome Robbins joined the team, bringing his complicated, fragile, and demanding genius to the challenge of fusing all the disparate elements of the show into a single unified vision. Granted an almost unprecedented eight weeks of rehearsal to create the production, he even went so far as to separate the actors playing the Sharks from the actors playing the Jets, rehearsing them separately and forbidding them to socialize even outside rehearsal. “Dear Lenny…. West Side Story means so much more to me than a first show, more even than the privilege of collaborating with you and Arthur and Jerry…May West Side Story mean as much to the theater and to the people who see it as to us.” — Stephen Sondheim in a letter to Leonard Bernstein, 1957. West Side Story’s impact was immediate. On opening night of its tryout in Washington, D.C., it was reported that the audience sat in stunned silence as the curtain fell, then rose as one and cheered until they were exhausted. The Broadway reception was just as strong, but West Side Story was lifted into the firmament of American culture with the release of the (eventually) Oscar-winning 1961 film. Robbins supervised the choreographic transfer and co-directed the film, ensuring that three of the Broadway show’s essential voices – his, Bernstein’s, and Sondheim’s – would be captured forever. The film endures, but the magic is recreated every time the show is performed live. Three generations ago, St. Louisans sat in these seats, held rapt by the same story we are sharing tonight. That the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet could be transformed into a work of art that is wholly and uniquely American—and that has been embraced by the entire world – is a testament to the promise and possibility of The Muny. What we do when we create is pretty simple, actually: We tell, and retell, these universal stories, so that together, we can find ourselves. Welcome to West Side Story and mark your calendar for 2033.

Welcome back to Forest Park and The Muny’s production of Chicago. Last year’s abbreviated season provided a welcome return of this historic St. Louis treasure, and this year, I’m excited for the return of a full summer of wonderful shows at The Muny. Chicago had a brief but memorable run before the early close of the 2021 season, so it only made sense to bring it back as the 2022 season opener. Hailed as “Musical theater magic,” “Downright breathtaking” and “Nothing short of brilliant!” during its 2021 run, Chicago was the talk of the town! This internationally acclaimed, Tony Award-winning musical from Kander and Ebb is a wickedly fun romp about fame, fortune and justice. Follow the escapades of merry murderesses Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly as they set out to prove fame is the best way to get away with … well, sit back, relax, and find out! At Edward Jones, we are longstanding supporters of the arts, and we are thrilled to sponsor The Muny again this year. Edward Jones has been helping clients and their families reach their goals since our founding in St. Louis 100 years ago. Our purpose is to improve the lives of our clients and colleagues, and together, better our communities and society. Much like our firm, The Muny is woven into the fabric of our region. We are excited and grateful to play our part in bringing tonight’s production back to St. Louis. Thank you for your support of The Muny. We’re very glad you’re here. Enjoy the show! Penny Pennington Managing Partner Edward Jones FROM OUR SPONSOR 7 Welcome to Forest Park and tonight’s production of West Side Story at The Muny. There's nothing like a night of wonderful theatre under the stars, and tonight you'll be enjoying one of the true classics in American musical history. A masterpiece from theatre legends Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Arthur Laurents, West Side Story touches on a wide variety of themes. At its heart, it is a love story - focused on the unbreakable bond between Maria and Tony. Love is a theme that is also inherent in the work we do at Edward Jones. Every day, we work with clients who are planning their futures with the people and places they love in mind. Whether we’re helping people save for a child or grandchild's education, ensuring they can travel to visit family or friends in retirement, or simply helping folks get started toward their goals, we’re committed to helping more people achieve financially what is most important to them. And there’s a lot of love to be found there. Our firm is a longstanding supporter of the arts in St. Louis, and we’re so happy to once again be sponsoring The Muny this year. Both of us have been institutions in this city for over 100 years - and we're both still going strong. We're honored to play “our part“ in tonight's production. Thank you for your support of The Muny. We love that you are here!

44 THE CRAWFORD TAYLOR EDUCATION INITIATIVE The Crawford Taylor Education Initiative develops new arts education opportunities while supporting ever-evolving Muny education programs. This initiative strives to provide unprecedented, hands-on instruction and mentoring to youth with the hopes of pursuing a career on or offstage in musical theatre. Current programs include: THE MUNY KIDS AND THE MUNY TEENS These performing troupes serve as goodwill ambassadors to the people of St. Louis and the surrounding region. A performance and training ground for talented young people, this intermediate to advanced level program spotlights children and teens who demonstrate exceptional voice and dance talent, stage presence, dedication and discipline. TECHNICAL THEATRE TRAINING (T3) The T3 program was created to expand the network of craftsmen, artisans and theatre professionals who work both locally and nationally in the entertainment industry. This program provides unprecedented training and mentorship to high school students in the industry of technical theatre helping to create a clear path for success in these fields after high school. EDUCATION CLASSES A unique opportunity for students to further their training through area-specific offerings and one-on-one engagement with musical theatre professionals in classes like our Master Audition Workshop, BFA Bootcamp, Musical Theatre Dance class and many more! INTERNSHIPS Interns at The Muny participate in the creation of seven full scale musical theatre productions over the summer. The environment is intense, the stakes are high, and the rewards are endless. Interns have the unique opportunity to work closely with union professionals including IATSE, USA, SDC, AFM and Actors’ Equity. THE MUNY SUMMER INTENSIVE This three-week program in St. Louis, held at Webster University invites rising junior and senior high school students from across the nation to participate in an immersive theatrical experience like no other!
