Greetings Association Members, Colleagues and Friends!
As a product of the Florida College System, I am humbled and honored to
serve this year as the 2020 President of the Association of Florida Colleges. I
am grateful for this opportunity to represent our awesome association!
The Association of Florida Colleges represents the “Great 28” state college
chapters. My focus this year will be at the chapter level to ensure that
ALL our chapters are active and serving our members. When we build our
chapters, membership in our commissions, and membership as a whole WILL
increase.
This year, we are “Looking for dedicated people with 2020 vision.” Our
main goal is to find dedicated people at each chapter that can help further our
association’s mission. To that end, I ask every member to let your chapter
know if you are interested in getting involved. You can also let me know
that you want to be involved and we’ll find somewhere at the state level for
you. I was on the “sidelines” looking for a way to get back into the game when
the opportunity came along to be President. I am sure there are others just
waiting to be asked or waiting for the opportunity to be involved. Let’s find
these dedicated people together.
Our colleges impact the lives of our students daily through the dedicated ser-
vice of the Florida College System employees. As President of the Association
that serves these employees, I look forward to a wonderful year and to the
many things that we will accomplish!
Best regards,
Matthew White
2020 AFC President

Welcome AFC Region III and Learning
Resources Commission Members!

How exciting that this conference is
happening! While our world is facing
these uncertain times, our AFC Region
and Commission leaders along with our
AFC President Matt White transitioned
this event to an actual virtual reality! As
leaders in our Association, they certainly
have stepped up and stepped out to
bring professional development right to
you – the AFC Member!

This is what is so great about AFC. You
can lead from right where you are. It may
be coincidence and it may be divine intervention but having an IT
expert as our AFC President right now just seems right, right? I am so
thankful for the technology that allows us to stay CONNECTED during
one of the most bizarre life shifts that any of us has ever faced.

Take what you learn today and spread it wide and far – and remember
that you can lead and grow from right where you are. Today is about
you! Take the time to engage, learn and refresh. Take back new ideas
to your newly renovated home office space and share it with others.
From a safe distance, of course.

I look forward to seeing you somewhere in the future where I can give
you a BIG AFC HUG.

Be well!

Yours in Service,
Marjorie McGee
AFC Immediate Past President

Dear AFC Region III & LRC
members:

I want to thank you for your
support and membership in the
association.

Professional development and
networking are two of our most
vital values and strategic
goals. Your presence here this
week clearly indicates your own
embodiment of the Region 3 conference theme, “Envision your
Career through the AFC Lens”. It is a privilege to provide you with
that lens. Our mission is to assure that you have a clear opportunity
and pathway to your personal and professional growth. With the
rapid changes impacting the operations and general nature of
higher education in all areas, there is nothing more important for
your career than to take advantage of every opportunity you can in
order to adapt. Ultimately, you will serve your students and the
citizens of your communities at the highest possible level as a
result.

I always say if you simply take one idea back from this event and
put it to practice in your job you will make a significant impact and
a difference. 2020 is about seeing things with a clear vision and
active purpose through this association. Have a great day.

Best regards,

Michael Brawer, CEO

As we approach the end of the 19-20 academic year, please
take this time to pause and reflect on your experiences and
accomplishments with students and colleagues throughout
the year. The Region III and LRC Spring Conference is won-
derful opportunity to connect with old friends and develop
new relationships with those who share your challenges and
ambitions.
We hope that you will share information and best practices,
and take what you gain back to campus. Please reach out if
you feel I can help add value to your Region/Commission
Conference experience. I encourage you to share what you
learn with peers and leaders at your college.
Thanks again for your Dedication to the Vision of our Associ-
ation.

Barnes, Chair of Academic Support, and Kristen Bales, Associate
Director, Writing Center

The purpose of this session is to share Daytona State College’s Academic

department’s website. The Chat offers students a mode of communication
familiar and comfortable to them, while giving academic support staff another
way to engage students and refer them to appropriate, relevant campus

after hours, the Chats are linked to a comprehensive, searchable FAQ
database.

Meet Generation Z: Who are they and how do they learn?
10:05 AM – 10:30 AM - Gabi Booth, Senior Professor, School of

Mathematics
As the first generation of truly digital natives, Generation Z is entering
college and the workplace. Gen Z students take in information in an
instant, look for answers on the internet rather than ask for advice, and are
used to YouTube videos for lessons. How can we teach and engage Gen
Z students, so it is meaningful to them? This presentation looks at
generational influences and characteristics of Gen Z. It further identifies
methods and ways to improve engagement, motivation and critical thinking
skills to support Gen Z in higher education.

What is AFC? What does AFC do for its members, and why should anyone
join and become active? If so, then this session is for you! Join us as we
share the inner workings of the AFC, its network, and how membership
comes with privileges. From advocacy to professional development, the
AFC has a lot to offer its members. Discover the benefits of belonging and
why AFC Membership matters!

Michelle Goldys – Director, Academic Advising, Career Services & Dual

This presentation will examine the relationship between career readiness
and first impressions as it relates to student success. It will highlight how our
students’ interpersonal interactions with peers, work colleagues, professors,
administrators, and supervisors create immediate impressions about how
