David Berlow
FONT BUREAU
David Berlow’s font journey began at the University of Wisconsin, where he attended college, when he opened up a font drawer in the type department containing metal letters.
Working at companies such as Linotype and Bitstream, from drawing letterforms, to designing letters through film, and finally digitally designing glyphs on the first Macintosh, Berlow transformed typography design alongside the simultaneousevolution of technology.
Today, David Berlow has grown to be one of the most prominent typographers in the design industry, as he founded the The Font Bureau Inc. Established in 1989, Berlow has designed over 100 fonts, and has helped transform typography into what it
is today.
He strived to create a work environment where young designers would assist each other by screaming out questions across the room. He described the Bureau as “not being competitive,” to encourage his employees to produce the most professional and original fonts.
David Berlow is a man with a “quirky” sense of humor, as his hobbies include “taking time off, collecting rubber bands and counting grains of sand.” David Berlow’s influence in typography is seen in every part of the design world and his impacts are continuous.

RAILROAD GOTHIC
American Type Founder’s Railroad Gothic was first introduced in 1906, originally as a metal typeface.
Being an All-Caps typeface, David Berlow was intrigued by its bold and spirited tone, which inspired him to create Titling Gothic, consisting of both upper and lower case glyphs, as well as a large range of weights and widths.
Railroad Gothic was later digitized, and became a more harmonious version of the 19th century metal faces.
