Jan 2023 Innovation Edition IV
Dear colleagues, This is the last edition of Pravah for FY23. I have been told that the theme this time is Innovation so I am going to try and write something innovative Jokes aside, if you have been reading my previous musings, you know that I love to draw on my experience in the American Financial Services industry; probably one of the most innovative industries in the world in both good (think Apple Pay) and bad (think crypto) way. Then I like to relate that experience to a “sustainable value added process” theme with value being defined by the customer. This time I am going to take a slightly different track. When I moved to the U.S. to get my MBA from the University of Georgia, I came face to face with top down innovation. U.S. Universities are notoriously good in synergizing with myriad stakeholders, including students, governments and corporations, to introduce new products and services into the world market on a continuous basis. It is not surprising that the U.S. was, and still is, at the forefront of the technology revolution. It continuously ranks in the top 10 most innovative countries in the world. It is the country with most number of patents in force (though China is catching up quickly!). The country has setup a sustainable innovation process to deliver value to its customers. When we think of world changing innovation, we think of the U.S. Risk taking approach: Readiness to take reasonable risk of failure, learn and restart. Nearness to the action: Be near and with the customer, supplier and shop floor to understand need to change, innovate and add value. At Hy-Tech we actively encourage innovation. We are blessed with a young and energetic team, full of ideas. Be it a small one, like change of CNC Jaws to big ones like CNC retrofitting of a Multi Spindle Machine. I am sure, Hy-Tech will continue its market leadership with constant innovation leading to better products, services and processes. Looking forward to a grand closure for FY23 and even more exciting FY24 ahead of us! Dear colleagues, This is the last edition of FY23. Over last three editions, we looked at themes of VUCA – Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous nature of business, CCO - Customer Centricity and CERS: Culture and customer touch points. All these are very important areas and relate to our core value systems and culture. Let us talk about a focus area of business which has become very critical in view of constantly changing market environment and customer needs, that is Innovation. Dictionary definition of innovation is ‘Innovation is a process by which a domain, a product, or a service is renewed and brought up to date by applying new processes, introducing new techniques, or establishing successful ideas to create new value’ Historically speaking, products and services were based on skills of an individual or an artisan, say shoes were made by a local cobbler as per needs of his customers generally devoid of any standardization. As the industry progressed, especially with the advent of automobiles led by famous Henry Ford assembly experiment, standardization became very important. Indeed, this helped the industrial revolution. In modern times, we still rely heavily on Standards, SOP’s and Guidelines as they play major role in consistent delivery, quality and financial performance. However, products and processes need to constantly improve to remain relevant, Kaizen is one such method where processes are improved via small change method. Needless to say that innovation is the most important aspect of business and decides long term viability of the organization. There are many examples of companies that failed to innovate like Nokia and many others who thrived on innovation like Apple. For any innovative organization, there are few common factors - Flexible mindset: To question status quo and be open to change without compromising core values. Freedom to innovate: Environment of innovation and active support from organization. Photo Editors Desk Mahesh Karlekar Ashwin Mondkar
But there is a second kind of innovation that is rapidly catching people’s fancy. Folks (including my children) call it ‘Hacks’. These are small, bottoms up innovations that may not improve the world but definitely improve your (and my) life. This could be something as simple as a VB Script in Excel to automate your most painful tasks. To be honest though, the first time I heard the word ‘Hack’, I thought of the Indian ‘Juggad’. I thought of the Autowala who signals a turn with his feet because his indicators are not working or non existent).I thought of farmers using Bisleri bottles for drip irrigation. You just have to look around; you will see millions of these examples. So India is also an amazingly innovative country, maybe the best there is at the grassroots level. Both systems of innovation have their challenges. Top down innovation can become ‘value add’ just because a large number of people adopt it and not necessarily because it adds true value to humanity (as seen with crypto-mania). Bottoms up innovation risks resulting in local optima where improvement to part of the process causes broader systemic problems (as can be noticed by any one stuck in traffic behind a overloaded truck with a broken axel). The challenge for a global organization (which I am really hopefully Hy-Tech will continue on the path of) is to adopt the best of both while avoiding the pitfalls of either. How do we institutionalize a process of innovation that adds true value to the customer while not impacting local creativity? Raising the question is the easy part. Finding answers, now that is something we all will need to figure out HIGHLIGHTS 2022 OPENING OF A NEW CONFERENCE HALL Nashik NEW VMC ADDED Nashik TRAINING PROGRAM AT SHINDE DESHMUKH INSTITUTE Shirwal
Hy- Tech developed this fitting in the early 1990s. It meets or exceeds the all requirements of SAE J1453 (Part1,2 and 3) and ISO 8434-3. O-ring face seal type fitting that consists of a nut, a body, an O-ring, and a sleeve (Fig. 1). Sleeves are available for brazed type or flanges type construction depending upon the requirement When the fitting is assembled, it compresses an O-ring in the precision machined groove of the fitting body to form a leak-tight seal. ORFS fittings are suitable for a wide range of tube wall thicknesses and are readily adaptable to an inch or metric tubing, hose connection, or other pipe connections, Due to the special design and unique construction make it suitable for a wide range of applications containing higher pressures, vibration, and impulse. This makes popular fitting to be used in construction, agriculture, machine tool, utility, paper making, automotive, etc. "O" Ring Face Seal Fittings consist of four main components: Bodies, "O" Rings, Nuts, and Sleeves. Bodies - Straight bodies are machined from bar stock. Shape fittings (elbows, tees, & crosses) are made from forgings. O-ring face seal fittings, otherwise known as ORFS fittings, consist of a fitting body, tube nut, sleeve and an O-ring. The O-ring of this fitting is situated in an indented O-ring groove on the fitting’s flat face. The sleeve of an ORFS fitting attaches to the tube you are ultimately connecting to, either mechanically or by brazing. These types of fittings are normally used in static applications to prevent leakage in the outward direction. When the nut of your fitting is tightened onto the body, the O-ring will compress between the body and the flat face of the tube flange or brazed sleeve to ultimately form a tight, leak-free seal. However, System pressure acting on already compressed tube pushes the o ring in an outward direction and temporarily deforms it. O-rings are distinct because they form a more reliable seal than the conventional metal-to-metal connections. However, ORFS fittings have more restrictions to abide by in the full range of media and temperatures. Straight Stud connector Tube Nut Tube Braze-on-Sleeve 0-Ring ( SAE J515 ) Stud End SAE J1926-2
