2019-2020 QHMS Brochure

2019-2020 QHMS Brochure

A “LEADER IN ME” AND PAIDEIA SCHOOL

Who? All Falcons benefit from a school-wide implementation
model. We welcome Falcons who live in the QHMS attendance
boundary, Falcons joining us from the Myers Park Traditional
School magnet continuum, and Falcons joining us through the
CMS School Choice lottery.

What? The Leader in Me (Franklin Covey) philosophy serves as
our operating system to build a culture of leadership and ensure
every Falcon develops their own mind and voice as problem-
solvers and critical thinkers. Paideia teaching strategies explicitly
tie the leadership philosophy to each classroom by driving
achievement through rigorous intellectual dialogue.

Why? We believe a world-class education enriches students as
learners and leaders; prepares students to be independent
thinkers who value the perspectives of others and form their own
voice; and develops academic curiosity and intrinsic motivation to
learn more, better oneself, and make a positive impact on the
community.

When? Round 1 of the CMS School Choice lottery is open
November 4, 2019 – December 13, 2019. Visit cmschoice.org for
more information.

At Quail Hollow Middle School, we are leaders on the P.A.T.H. to
college and career success.
P = Perseverance
A = Achievement
T = Thoughtfulness
H = Health

Bell Schedule and Logistical Information

Official School Start: 9:15; Afternoon Dismissal: 4:15
Daily classes: math, language arts, science, social studies
Students take two elective classes (“specials” in elementary school) each semester on an

A/B Day schedule

Our school is organized into grade level hallways. 6th and 7th grade are organized in
teams, meaning each student's classes are situated in close proximity to each other and

students on the same team share the same four core content teachers. This makes it
easy for students to navigate class changes, for families to communicate with teachers,
and for teachers to collaborate about the best approaches to support student learning. In
8th grade, students rotate among classes across the grade level to prepare them for the

high school. Lunches and elective classes are organized by grade level and most
Leadership Advisory Groups are grade level specific. Each grade level has its own

counselor and administrator with offices located on the hall for easy accessibility.

Leadership Advisory
Falcons engage in Leadership Advisory for 45 minutes three days each week. Tuesdays

focus on goal-setting and executive functioning skill development (organization, time
management, etc.). On Wednesdays students participate in a Leadership Club to

demonstrate their unique genius. On Thursdays, students engage in a direct lesson about
the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

"The Leader in Me" Paradigms
Everyone can be a leader.
Everyone has genius.
Change starts with me.

Educators empower students to own their own learning.
Develop the whole person.

Paideia Principles (National Paideia Center)
We believe…

that all children can learn;
that, therefore, they all deserve the same quality of schooling, not just the same
quantity;
that the quality of schooling to which they are entitled is what the wisest parents would
wish for their own children, the best education for the best being the best education
for all;
that schooling at its best is preparation for becoming generally educated in the course
of a whole lifetime, and that schools should be judged on how well they provide such
preparation;
that the three callings for which schooling should prepare all Americans are, (a) to
earn a decent livelihood, (b) to be a good citizen of the nation and the world, and (c)
to make a good life for oneself;
that the primary cause of genuine learning is the activity of the learner’s own mind,
sometimes with the help of a teacher functioning as a secondary and cooperative
cause;
that the three types of teaching that should occur in our schools are didactic teaching
of subject matter, coaching that produces the skills of learning, and Socratic
questioning in seminar discussion;
that the results of these three types of teaching should be (a) the acquisition of
organized knowledge, (b) the formation of habits of skill in the use of language and
mathematics, and (c) the growth of the mind’s understanding of basic ideas and
issues;
that each student’s achievement of these results should be evaluated in terms of that
student’s competencies and not solely related to the achievements of other students;
that the principal of the school should never be a mere administrator, but always a
leading teacher who should be cooperatively engaged with the school’s teaching staff
in planning, reforming, and reorganizing the school as an educational community;
that the principal and faculty of a school should themselves be actively engaged in
learning;
that the desire to continue their own learning should be the prime motivation of those
who dedicate their lives to the profession of teaching.

Communication
We want families to be informed about their students' progress at school. Families are
encouraged to monitor student grades online through the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
We also use an online program called Hero to encourage students to arrive to class on

time, come prepared, actively participate, and complete homework. Families can
monitor their students' Hero points through an online parent website/app.

On Student-Led Conference Nights at the end of each quarter, families can come to
school to receive their student's report card early, to hear their student explain their
progress toward meeting academic and personal goals, and have the opportunity to
check-in with teachers in-person to ask questions. At these events, we also host

information sessions in Spanish for Spanish-speaking families.

The school works to communicate with families in a variety of methods. The Falcon
Connection newsletter contains calendar and event information as well as articles that

help you stay informed about what is happening at the school. Each grade level
publishes a monthly newsletter with even more information about what students are

learning. We also encourage you to follow us in social media.

QHMS Vision
The Quail Hollow Middle School of Leadership community is invested in
cultivating the leadership of our diverse Falcons. Through goal-setting,
personal reflection, and authentic communication; we value, inspire, and
respect the unique genius in each of us. We strive for all of our leaders

to be on the P.A.T.H. to college and career success to ensure success.

A few of the many things we love about our school…
Our Falcons! We serve a beautifully diverse community. We empower
our Falcons to learn from each other and develop an appreciation for the

fact that each person has a unique perspective, background, and
contribution. The talent of our students has been celebrated with
superior band and orchestra ratings, Do the Write Thing awards, MLK
Art Competition awards, state and national level Future Problem Solvers

awards, and much more!

Our Staff! Our faculty and staff are incredibly passionate about
educating children and talented in doing so. We focus on building
relationships with our Falcons so they feel safe taking academic risk and
engaging in the rigorous instruction we design. We challenge our
Falcons to reach their full potential. We are proud to report every
subgroup of our student community met or exceeded expected growth
last school year. A QHMS teacher has been honored as a MeckEd

Teacher of Excellence for the last four years in a row!

The Opportunities! Leadership Clubs; Project Lead the Way courses such
as Design & Modeling, Automation & Robotics, App Creators and Science
of Technology; high school math and foreign language beginning in 7th

grade; fitness class; clubs such as Cross Country for Youth, Future
Problem Solvers, Trout in the Classroom, and Rugby – You name it, we’ve

got it!

Middle School Sports
7th and 8th grade students are eligible to play middle school sports. Fall:
Cheerleading, Golf, Football, Softball, Volleyball Winter: Basketball, Cheerleading

Spring: Baseball, Track & Field, Soccer

Tutoring
To further support our Falcons, each teacher offers tutoring before or after school at

least one hour per week before or after school. Because our teachers plan
collaboratively, students can attend tutoring with any of the content area teachers in

the grade level, which expands the availability of this free tutoring opportunity.

College/Career Going Culture
It is important that students begin talking about college and careers at an early age
to understand the value of educational opportunities. We offer a variety of Career

and Technical Education Classes, including Project Lead the Way courses. We
host a Career Fair in the Spring. Each grade level will attend a local college visit
such that Falcons will visit three different colleges/universities during middle school.

One-to-One Technology
QHMS uses technology to support student learning. All classrooms are equipped

with mounted projectors, screens, and speaker systems; Promethean TVs; or
Smartboards. We are one-to-one and all Falcons carry a school-issued

Chromebook throughout the school day and take them home each evening. Each
teacher is provided a laptop, in addition to desktop computers in each classroom.

Teachers utilize technology to differentiate instruction for students through
platforms such as iReady, Edgenuity, Google Classroom, Canvas, etc.

Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA)
QHMS is lucky to have a strong PTSA to support our school initiatives, staff
appreciation, and campus beautification. This year the PTSA has raised over

$25,000 to support our school.
