Based on the diary entry, what can you conclude about the lives of Grandpa and Grandma in the past? They led difficult lives and they worked hard because they had no electricity and gadgets to help them. (Accept any suitable answer) 25 May 2024, Saturday My parents brought me to my grandparents’ house during the school holidays. I was so excited to see Grandpa and Grandma! Grandma cooked a delicious lunch to welcome us. After that, Grandpa brought us to his orchard. We feasted on rambutans, mangoes and durians. Grandpa said he used to do everything himself, from planting the trees to harvesting the fruits. Now, he could afford to hire workers to help him. 28 May 2024, Tuesday I helped Grandma to clean the house after lunch. She vacuumed the floor and carpets while I dusted the shelves and tables. It was tiring for Grandma to clean the house in the past because she did not use to have a vacuum cleaner. I found some marbles and a top while cleaning the house. Grandpa said they used to belong to my uncle when he was a young boy. I was so happy when Grandpa said I could keep the marbles and the top. 31 May 2024, Friday It had been raining non-stop for two days, so I had to stay indoors. It was freezing so I put on my jacket. Grandpa told me stories about his childhood. In those days, he used to walk 2.5 kilometres to and from school every day. The house did not use to have electricity, so Grandpa had to study under an oil lamp at night. Grandpa also showed me an old family photo which was taken when he was 12 years old. He was nervous because it was the day of an important match. ‘We must win this football match. We’ve trained too hard for us to lose at this stage,’ he told himself. The match was to decide the best football team in the state of Perak. The players on his team were Chee Siong, Viknesh, Muthu, Zainal, Jerry, Jason, Kenny, Sam, Fauzi and Farez. They had put in a lot of time and effort into their training. Just before the match, Adam, as the captain, said to his team, ‘Today, we lay everything on the field. Everything that we have worked for comes down to this. We have got this, team! We will win!’ The time came for the two opposing teams to meet on the field. Johan, the captain of the other team looked at Adam in the eyes. The tension between the captains was felt in the air. When the match finally started, both teams played their best. No one wanted to lose. The score was still 0-0 when there were only five minutes left before the match ended. Finally, the goal shot arrived! They passed the ball to each other until Adam kicked the ball to the opponent’s goal post and GOAAAAAAAAAALLL!!! The winner was Adam’s team. They were named the best football team in Perak. 54 PART 3 [5 marks] Questions 10 to 14 Read the text below and answer the questions that follow. For each question, choose the correct answer A, B or C. Life in the Qing Dynasty The Qing Dynasty is the last Chinese imperial dynasty, lasting from 1644 to 1912. In the Qing Dynasty, people wore unique clothes such as long robes with beautiful designs. The colour of the clothes showed a person’s rank or status. Important people like the emperor wore bright and colourful robes, while ordinary people wore simple and plain colours. Nowadays, we have many clothing styles like jeans and T-shirts that are more comfortable and easier to wear. People living in the Qing Dynasty also practised calligraphy. Instead of using pencils or pens, people in the Qing Dynasty used brushes to write and create beautiful art. Calligraphy was an important skill to learn back then. People used calligraphy to express their feelings and thoughts. They hung calligraphy art in their homes as decoration. This is something modern people still do today. For entertainment, people watched Peking opera in public theatres and open spaces. Performers in Peking opera wore colourful costumes called xingtou to play different characters. They told interesting stories of ancient heroes in China through music, singing, acting and acrobatics. Even though many years have passed, Peking opera is still very popular in places like Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai. ©Sasbadi Sdn. Bhd.
