1. We combine ‘used to’ and a verb to form affirmative sentences that describe past
actions, habits or preferences that are no longer true in the present.

2. We combine ‘didn’t use to’ and a verb to form negative sentences that describe
actions or habits that did not occur in the past.
• My father didn’t use to drive to work.
• My grandparents didn’t use to live in the city.
3. We usually use ‘did … use to’ to ascertain whether the habit or behaviour in question
had indeed happened in the past.
• Did you use to watch TV every night?
• Did you use to help with the chores?
