Questions
There are a few types of questions that they can ask you:
Wh-questions – like ‘what’, ‘who’, ‘when’, ‘where’, ‘why’ and ‘how’.
Sequencing questions, which ask you to arrange what happened in
the text in the right order.
Meaning from context questions, which ask you about the
meaning of a word or phrase.
HOTS questions, which will test you on your thinking skills,
such as:
opinion questions, which ask you to give opinions.

Types of Text
The reading comprehension questions are based on:
Linear text – Stories, letters, emails, dialogues, etc.
Non-linear text – Posters, advertisements, etc.
Section Five: Reading Comprehension 49
Wh-questions
Many of the questions that you will be asked are wh-questions. Let’s do a
quick revision.
These questions are used to ask about certain types of information. They all
start with ‘wh’ (except for the word ‘how’). Imagine that you are asking
questions like a police officer:
1.What happened?
‘What’ asks you to look for information about people, things and animals.
2.How did they get away?
‘How’ asks you to look for the way something was done.
3.Who is the criminal?
‘Who’ asks you to look for a person.
4.When did it happen?
‘When’ asks you to look for a time or date.
5.Why did this happen?
‘Why’ asks you to look for a reason.

6.Which person could be a witness?
‘Which’ asks you to make a choice.
7.Where did he go?
‘Where’ asks for a place.

female. Step 2: Read the sentences
around the word and look for a

Section Five: Reading Comprehension 51
Meaning from Context Questions
Another type of question is where you get asked about the meaning of a
word or phrase. Sometimes, you will be asked to replace the word or phrase
with another one that has a similar meaning.
Context
It is important that you read widely and learn new words to help you
understand texts. When you aren’t sure about the meaning of a word, you
can look at the phrases or sentences around the word to help you find
out the meaning. This is called context.

©SECTION SIX: WRITING
Introduction to Writing
The Bahasa Inggeris UPSR SJKC – Penulisan (024) will test your writing
skills. The paper is divided into three sections. Each section has different
types of questions. Let’s find out what they are.
Section A: Information Transfer
You will be given a stimulus (a poster, an advertisement, a passage,
etc). Then, you must complete a text (a letter, an email, a
dialogue, etc.) using the information provided in the stimulus.
Section B: Giving Opinions
In this section, you will be given one or two stimuli. The first
question tests your ability to find specific information in the
stimuli. The second question tests your skill in writing an opinion
based on the stimuli given. You may be asked to give your opinion
in the form of a linear text (a letter, an email, a simple
paragraph, etc.)
Section C: Note Expansion
This section has two questions, but you only need to answer one
question. You will be given a picture or a series of pictures,
along with some helping words. You must write a story based on
the given picture or pictures. You may use the helping words in
your story.
Don’t forget to check your answers for spelling,
punctuation and grammatical mistakes! You can lose
marks for making those mistakes.
