Suffixes : ‘-tion’ and ‘-sion’

1. A suffix is a word ending. It is a group of letters that we place at the end of a word to

form a new one. We add the suffixes ‘-tion’ and ‘-sion’ to create nouns.

2. The suffix ‘-tion’ is used to show the state, condition, process or result. It is usually

used with words that end with the letters ‘t’, ‘te’, ‘be’ and ‘re’.

• create – creation 

3. The suffix ‘-sion’ is used in sentences to show ‘ t he state of ’  or ‘ t he act of ’  a certain action.

It is usually used with words that end with the letters ‘s’, ‘se’, ‘de’ and ‘it’. Sometimes we

have to drop the ‘-e’ or change the final consonant before we add the suffix.

1. Conditionals describe the result of a certain condition.
2. We often use ‘if’ in conditional sentences.
3. We use the first conditional when we talk about a future situation that we believe to

be real or possible.
4. The structure of the first conditional is usually:

5. When the ‘if’ clause is used in the beginning of a sentence, we use a comma:

Suffix ‘-ment’

1. We add the suffix ‘-ment’ at the end of some verbs to make them nouns.

2. For example, when we added the suffix ‘-ment’ to the word ‘arrange’ (verb), it

becomes ‘arrangement’ (noun).
