GLOSSARY OF SONG TERMS

ballad A term with many different meanings in music and literature, in
modern popular music a ballad is a sentimental or romantic song, usu-
ally with the same melody for each stanza. Ballads have often been the
big sellers, the songs that could move listeners without benefit of plot or
character. Most ballads since World War II have a fox trot (4/4) base, but
there are many exceptions to that generalization over the decades. A nar-
rative ballad is more like poetry’s definition of the term (a poem that tells
a story), and narrative songs often show up in Disney productions, such
as “The Ballad of Davy Crockett” and “The Bells of Notre Dame.”

character song Any musical number that is concerned with revealing a
character’s personality or reaction to the events of the plot can be con-
sidered a character number. A person’s first character song is often his or
her “I am” song. Character songs often do not travel outside the context
of the story as easily as ballads do, yet there have been several popular
ones over the years, such as “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” and
“Whistle While You Work.”

charm song A musical number that is less about character development
than it is about utilizing the character’s warmth and/or comic entertain-
ment value has been termed a charm song. Although charm songs are of-
ten expendable to the plot, they have sometimes been audience favorites,
as in the case of “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “The Dwarfs’ Yodel Song.”

316 GLOSSARY OF SONG TERMS

chorus A group of characters that sing or dance together is the definition of
chorus as used in this book. A musical number can be performed by a vo-
cal chorus of singers or a dancing chorus of dancers. A chorus number is
one that emphasizes the group over the individual, though many songs are
sung by principals accompanied by a chorus. In many films, an omniscient
chorus can be heard on the soundtrack, sometimes reflecting the thoughts
of a character or providing exposition. This often occurs during the opening
credits of a movie. Chorus is also another term for the refrain of a song, al-
though, for the sake of clarification, that definition is not used in this book.

dubbing The adding or replacing of an actor’s singing and/or speaking
voice on a live-action film or television soundtrack is known as dubbing.
All voices in an animated production are, in a sense, dubbed. Even when
a performer does his or her own singing in a filmed or videotaped pro-
duction, the songs are usually recorded beforehand, so in a way most
actors are dubbing on screen, even if it is their own voice. The paren-
thetical phrase “singing voice of” is used throughout the book to indicate
when one person dubbed the singing for another actor who provided the
speaking voice for a character.

“I am” song Often a solo, but any song that introduces a character or a
group of characters by revealing their wishes, dreams, confusions, and
so on, is termed an “I am” song. These songs usually occur early in a
production, helping to establish major characters by letting them express
themselves. Sometimes called an “I wish” song, they became requisite in
musical theatre with the advent of the integrated musical in the 1940s.
The “I am” song has been very important and memorable in many stage
and screen works over the decades, as in the Disney songs “Go the Dis-
tance” and “Part of Your World.”

interpolation A song added to a production that was not written by the
songwriters who wrote the rest of the score is said to be interpolated
into the show. More common in films and television than in the theatre,
interpolations serve the same purpose in all media: to improve a weak
score or take advantage of a popular song by adding it to the production.
Throughout the book, interpolations are included if they were written for
a Disney product. Classical music, such as those used in the two Fantasia
films, and song standards, such as the 1918 favorite “After You’ve Gone”
interpolated into Make Mine Music (1946), are not included.

list song Any song, whether serious or comic, that is structured as a list of
examples or a series of items is termed a list song. They are sometimes
called “laundry list” songs, although the result is intended to be much
more interesting than that. Memorable Disney list songs include “The
Bare Necessities,” “When I See an Elephant Fly,” and “Under the Sea.”

GLOSSARY OF SONG TERMS 317

lyric A line from a song (or the entire set of lines written for a song) is con-
sidered a lyric. A lyric is written by a lyricist, as opposed to the author, who
writes the unsung words in a script. The plural form lyrics refers to the
words to all the songs a lyricist has written for a score; one writes a lyric
for a song and the lyrics for a score. In this book, when a songwriter is not
referred to specifically as a lyricist or a composer, it can be assumed that he
or she wrote both music and lyric for the song. When a song is listed as be-
ing written by two or more songwriters with no distinction made about who
wrote what, it means that the artists wrote both music and lyrics together,
as in the case of all the songs by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman.

pastiche song Any musical number that echoes the style, either musically
or lyrically, of an earlier era is said to pastiche the past. Such songs can
be written to spoof the past, as in “Prince Ali” (which spoofs a Las Vegas–
like production number) and “Happy Working Song” (poking fun at the
famous song “Whistle While You Work”), or to recapture the period for
the setting of the new work, as with “Step in Time” (which pastiches
British music hall) and “Be Our Guest” (a delightful version of a French
Folles Bergère number).

refrain The main body of a song is the refrain. It is the section that follows
the verse and repeats itself with the same melody and/or lyric. The most
familiar part of a popular song is usually the refrain. The refrain is some-
times called the chorus, but the latter term is too often confused with a
group of singers, so it is not used in this book.

release A section of the refrain that departs from the repeated melody is
said to be a release from the expected and explores a new musical line
that may or may not have been suggested in the main melody. The re-
lease (also sometimes called the bridge) helps keep a song from being too
predictable or monotonous.

reprise When all or part of a song is repeated later in a production, it is said
to be reprised. Reprises may be sung by the same characters who sang the
number originally or by different ones, and often a reprise has a different
lyric from the first. A song that is reprised in a film, theatre production,
or television show is more likely to be remembered by an audience, so
songwriters often try to have their best numbers reprised in a musical.

soliloquy A solo in which a character is alone and reveals his or her thoughts
and concerns in the form of a song is considered a musical soliloquy. The
most effective soliloquies are songs that show a character debating two sides
of an issue or trying to come to a decision, as in “Reflection” and “The Mad-
ness of King Scar.” A later development of the soliloquy on film and televi-
sion is having the character’s thoughts only sung on the soundtrack. Thus, it
is possible to have a soliloquy when the character is with other people.

318 GLOSSARY OF SONG TERMS

song form or structure Although there are no set rules for writing a song,
songwriters know what works and what the public likes to hear, so over
the years a formula for structuring a song was developed. Most songs of
the past consisted of a verse and a refrain, sometimes going back and
forth between the two. In later years verses became less prevalent, but
they have far from disappeared. The most standard form for the refrain
of a song is AABA; that is, the first two stanzas are musically identical, the
third is a variation on it or a separate release, then the final stanza repeats
the initial melody of the first two sections. For many years thirty-two mea-
sures was considered the traditional length for a popular song, but musical
numbers written for stage and films often broke away from this pattern.

standard A song that remains popular over a number of years is classified
as a standard. In many cases a song finds little success at first and only
reaches the rank of standard years later. There are also standards that
fell out of favor after some years, then found a new audience and popu-
larity decades later. Examples of song standards that come from Disney
productions include “Some Day My Prince Will Come,” “Baby Mine,”
“When You Wish Upon a Star,” and “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah.”

theme song When a song is repeated during each episode of a television
series, it is identified as the theme song for the show. Usually this song is
heard at the beginning of each episode, often combined with the opening
credits. In some cases, a movie theme song is heard in more than one
film in a series, such as the rousing theme from Pirates of the Caribbean
feature films.

torch song In popular music, a torch song is usually a sentimental number
involving unrequited love. Torch songs may be comic or sarcastic as well
as serious, and some torch songs involve a character’s yearning for a place
as well as a person, as in “Mexico” and “Home on the Range.”

verse The introductory section of a song is referred to as the verse. The
melody is usually distinct from that of the refrain that follows, and verses
tend to be shorter. Although most songs are better known for their re-
frains than their verses, the verse can be very important in setting up the
song’s ideas or images. Many songs achieve their full potency because of
a well-written verse. Sometimes verses are written for a song but are cut
from a film or video for various reasons, usually having to do with length.
For example, “When You Wish Upon a Star” has a lovely verse that was
deleted from Pinocchio (1940) and has rarely been heard.
