Named after Dr. Maria Montessori, the Montessori approach to education is scientifically geared toward the psychological stages of the student at every phase of their natural developmental progress. This allows the student to discover their strengths and master challenging concepts based upon their own personalgrowth and inspired interest. Students continually earn expanding freedom of choice, with increasing responsibility, in an intentionally-sized community of diverse learners and international cultures. Montessori education promotes hands-on, self-paced, collaborative learning with authentic problem solving that responds to the needs of the student’s environment and community. Montessori education encourages students to follow their innate interests, engage in deep intellectual inquiry, and reach academic mastery. Self-awareness of the student’s potential is expanded, allowing them to confidently construct their future. The student develops a strong sense of self and personal expression, developing agency of their own voice. Students develop a strong empathy for humanity, a deep understanding of interdependence and become active peace makers. Montessori promotes leadership, responsibility, self-discipline, independence, adaptability, resilience, curiosity, and a passion for lifelong learning. Hershey Montessori School’s residential program is not your typical middle and high school boarding experience. Our adolescent residential experience has nurtured students’ lives around the globe for more than 20 years. Adolescents build relationships and memories with peers of diverse backgrounds and ethnicities, while preparing for leadership in a global society. The Hershey Montessori Adolescent Program is grounded in a community of students who live, work, and study together. Residential students play an integral part in running the campus, the farm operations and its related businesses, caring for animals, the gardens, and for each other full-time. Regional, national, and international students are attracted to Hershey Montessori’s residential program for its beautiful environment, caring faculty, and the independence they develop alongside our warm and welcoming staff. Residental students help and share in these activities: • Community work • Microeconomy businesses outside of school hours • Cleaning their rooms and learning enviorments • Cooking breakfast, dinner, and weekend brunches • Doing kitchen and personal laundry • Animal chores Social Responsibility & Practical Life As a holistic approach to education, Dr. Montessori calls for adolescents to live, study and work in anenvironment that supports both the use of the hands and the head-both intellectual and practical work.Practical skills accompany many intellectual activities including work in a scientific laboratory, computerprogram operations, use of tools and equipment on the farm and in a commercial kitchen, and use oftechnology to generate marketing materials. In addition, every student in the program contributes to the operation of the farm and its businesses; every student cooks and serves meals; every student supports themaintenance of the buildings and the grounds. As a result, every student feels he/she belongs and is an important contributing member to their microcosm of society. "Hershey Montessori School is an excellent environment that feels homey and welcoming. This school prepares you for real-life by teaching skills like cooking, cleaning, and practical work." Student - Upper School "Where to start. I attended the HMS Adolescent Program on the farm from 2006- 2008 (7th through 9th grade) and it was one of the best educational experiences of my life. I loved the freedom to grow, the international student body, the practicality of the classes that took place on the farm, and the guides. I couldn’t imagine a better place to have middle school / junior high. In particular, I highly valued “occupations” classes combining theoretical with practical knowledge on bees, bridges, micro economy, and more. At the same time HMS offered advanced foreign language classes and Algebra II for 9th graders, keeping me on track with honors/AP curricula in pub Student - Upper School "Hershey's staff care deeply for and respect children. My three children are challenged to make independent decisions, care for their peers, and care for the world around them. How many schools can say they nurture the spirit and potential of each individual child?" Niche - Upper School
