Spell-Based Monsters his title cBL, monster based on the animal friendship spell from the Player’s Handbook. It’s part of a series in the Player’s Spellbook podcast, in which Derek and Tim discuss all the spells of Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition, from the perspective of Dungeon Masters and players. New episodes air every Monday morning, and are accompanied by new monster stat blocks on the DMs Guild. Animal Friendship The Beast Lord is a powerful fey who rules over animals. There can be many kinds of animal lord based around the kind of beast they rule over, such as horselords, apelords, and sharklords. They normally appear as beautiful, majestic examples of the animls they rule over. Some beast lords have no specialization and extend their domain over all beasts, appearing as ever-shifting primal amalgams of fangs, fur, and scales. Note that the animals summoned by the conjure animals spell are considered both beasts and fey, and therefore they benefit from the animal lord’s Inspire Beasts trait. 1 Beast Lord Large fey, chaotic neutral Armor Class 17 (natural armor) Hit Points 218 (23d10 + 92) Speed 60 ft., climb 60 ft., swim 60 ft. Beasts cannot attack the animal lord. Inspire Beasts. Beasts within 30 feet of the animal lord have advantage on attack rolls and saving throws. Pack Tactics. The animal lord has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the animal lord’s allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn’t incapacitated. AMultiattack. The animal lord makes three Savage attacks and one beast charmed by the animal lord can use its reaction to make a melee attack. Savage. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (4d8 + 3) piercing or slashing damage (animal lord’s choice). Spellcasting. The animal lord casts one of the following spells, using Charisma as its spellcasting ability (save DC 16): at will: animal friendship, commune with nature (as an action), speak with animals 3/day: conjure animals, dominate beast Animal Friendship
